Answer: 1871

Charles Feltman, a German butcher, opened the first Coney Island system in New York City. There has been argument over who introduced hot dogs to America, since many German immigrants did so around this era.

Answer: Hot dogs were served with bread for the first time

Hot dogs with bread (but not yet the modern bun) were served at a Browns game in St. Louis. Also, the Colombian Exposition, held in Chicago the same year, had hundreds of visitors who consumed hot dogs. They liked them because they were convenient and cheap. Bruce Kraig, a former professor at Roosevelt University, researched that the early Germans consumed hot dogs, known as dachshunds, with bread.
3. In 1904, hot dogs were served with buns for the first time. Where did this first take place?

Answer: Louisiana Purchase Exposition

Anton Feuchtwanger, a Bavarian concessionaire, used to contribute gloves to each buyer to keep their hands clean. Many customers would not return the gloves and he would often run out. Feuchtwanger asked his brother-in-law, a baker, for more gloves. However, he came up with the idea to serve rolls to fit the meat.

Tad Dorgan was a cartoonist at the New York Journal. He was unable to spell dachshund so he called them 'hot dogs' for short. Many vendors would yell out 'get your red hots'. The two stuck and thereafter were commonly referred to as 'hot dogs'.

Answer: Japan

This claim was made in 2006 by the Shizuoka Meat Producers in Tokyo, Japan. The sausage measured 60 meters in length.

The Coney Island dog was originated in Jackson, Michigan. It can also be referred to as a 'white hot'.
8. Who was the founder of Nathan's hot dogs?

Answer: Nathan Handwerker

Handwerker was an employee at Feltman's Hot Dog stand. In 1916, comedians Eddie Cantor and Jimmy Durante persuaded him to go into business for himself. Handwerker charged a nickel while his new competitor charged a dime. He became so successful that over the years Nathan's bought out other companies, such as Kenny Rogers Roasters, Miami Subs n' Grill or Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips.
9. Which of these is NEVER used in a Chicago-styled hot dog?

Answer: ketchup

A Chicago-styled hot dog is an all-beef hot dog, originally from Chicago. It is either steamed, broiled or grilled. It is never boiled, however. They can also come with dill pickles, tomatoes, sport peppers, salt and even on occasion, cucumbers.
10. Which of these hot dog manufacturers hold the traditional fourth of July hot dog eating contest?

Answer: Nathan's

Every year since 1916, Nathan's held this tradition. The contestants need to be at least 18 years old and under contract with Nathan's. The first prize for the winner is $10,000. Notable winners of this contest were Takeru Kobayashi, who won from 2001-06, and Joey Chestnut, 2007-09.
