Question 1 of 10
1. Tyranids have always been known as close-combat specialists. From the miniscule Rippers and masses of man-sized Hormagaunts to the snakelike Raveners and Carnifexes as tall as a building, most Tyranids have specialized close-combat biomorphs.

What are the most common and ubiquitous of these close-combat biomorphs, which can all be found on Hormagaunts, Raveners and Trygons?
Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. The Tyranids have a variety of biological ranged weapons, from bio-guns that shoot rapacious beetles at foes to cannons that engulf them in a flammable mass of biochemicals. Taking cover against some of these weapons is effective - it is however useless to hide behind a rock if the Tyranid one is taking cover from can simply spray the entire area with lethal gas.

Against which of the following Tyranid weapons is hiding behind cover completely useless?
Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. While all members of the Tyranid swarm are essentially biological weapons, some Tyranids are more weaponlike than others. This particular Tyranid is essentially a living bomb, floating around the battlefield until its tentacles touch a potential victim, causing it to explode.

What is this Tyranid bio-weapon?
Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. The Bonesword is a specialized close-combat bioweapon consisting of a chitinous blade that allows the Tyranid wielding it to focus psychic energy. Bonesabres are a deadlier, specialized modification of the bonesword employed by only the most powerful Tyranids.

Which of the following Tyranid creatures wields Bonesabres?
Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Tyranid biological ranged symbiotes often fire a stream of deadly liquids and liquid-like compounds. In Warhammer 40,000 game terms, these weapons are template weapons.

Which of the following weapons is NOT fired as a template weapon?
Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Tyranids, relying on the limits of evolution for their bio-weaponry, have always had trouble dealing with heavily-armoured tanks at range. Over the years, they have evolved various ranged weaponry to deal with these armoured behemoths. These include corrosive poison shards thrown at supersonic velocities and concentrated bolts of pure psychic power.

Which of the following Tyranid ranged attack is best suited for dealing with heavily-armoured tanks?
Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. One interesting in-game aspect that is unique to the Tyranids is the mechanic of some of their ranged weaponry. Some Tyranids' "guns" can shoot a particular number of times depending on the base attacks of the Tyranid using it. In 4th Edition, when this mechanic was introduced, there were several ranged weapons that used this. In the 5th Edition Codex however, only one ranged weapon that used this mechanic remained.

Which of the following is this weapon, usually fielded in pairs?
Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. The Barbed Strangler is a specialized Tyranid weapon that shoots out a seed pod. The seed pod rapidly reaches maturity with seconds, ensnaring and strangling any victims within its reach.

Which of the following is a larger version of this weapon?
Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. This particular weapon, that Termagants could be armed with, was introduced in the 2nd Edition Tyranid Codex. Officially absent for most of 3rd and 4th edition, it returned as an option for Termagants in the 5th Edition codex.

Which of the following is this bioweapon?
Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. The entire range of Tyranid bioweapons include both ranged bioweapons such as projectile launchers and close-combat ones such as claws and talons.

Which of the following Tyranids cannot have any ranged weapon symbiotes?
Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Scything Talons

Scything Talons are specially-evolved muscular limbs many Tyranids use in hand-to-hand combat. The limbs end in a single, extremely elongated and streamlined claw, naturally sharp on the inside and occasionally dripping with various poisons and toxins.

While of little use in penetrating thick armour, these talons are capable of cleaving an unarmoured adult human in half with a single swipe, even by the smallest Tyranids that have them - Hormagaunts. Some specialized Tyranids use their Scything Talons for other purposes, such as the Mawloc's broader talons which it uses to rapidly tunnel underground.

Answer: Thorax Swarm

The Devourer fires a volley of carnivorous fleshworms in a somewhat ballistic manner; cover is highly effective against this weapon.

The Barbed Strangler fires a seed pod that rapidly develops into a tentacled horror grasping at potential victims with hooked tentacles; one can simply interpose a rock or a thicket of bushes in-between oneself and the seed pod.

The Impaler Cannon on the other hand, is fired in a high-ballistic fashion much like artillery. The javelin-like spears it fires are semi-organic and can guide their descent over walls straight into an unsuspecting victim. However, staying within thick foliage still offers some protection from this.

It is the Thorax Swarm, a template weapon in in-game terms, that is fired as a swarm of flying insects and larvae that can engulf an area much like gouts of flame from a flamethrower. There is no effective way to take cover from this weapon and only completely sealed body armour is proof against this weapon - if one is lucky.

Answer: Spore Mine

The Tyranid Spore Mine is a living bomb filled with buoyant gases that make it float a few feet from the ground. Sensory tentacles hang from the underside of the mine detect any potential enemies within range, causing the mine to explode violently. Spore mines are either filled with corrosive acidic fluid, poisonous gas or are covered with plates of chitin - all of which shower death and destruction upon any unfortunate victims that are in range when the Spore Mine detonates.

Answer: Swarmlord

The Swarmlord, one of the most powerful Hive Tyrants, is the only Tyranid known to wield Bonesabres. These swords are serrated, unlike Boneswords which are smooth and monomolecularly-edged. They are also semi-crystalline, formed from an extragalactic mineral. Using the Bonesabres, the Swarmlord can slay almost any victim with one swipe.

Both the Hive Tyrant and the Tyranid Prime wield Boneswords, while the Broodlord has to rely on its own claws or a set of Scything Talons.
5. Tyranid biological ranged symbiotes often fire a stream of deadly liquids and liquid-like compounds. In Warhammer 40,000 game terms, these weapons are template weapons. Which of the following weapons is NOT fired as a template weapon?

Answer: Deathspitter

The Pyrovore's Flamespurt, Tyrannofexes' Pyro-acid Spray and Termagant's Strangleweb all fire with the "template" game-mechanic. The Deathspitter, a complex bio-weapon that fires maggots bursting with corrosive slime, does not. The closest it has come to being a template weapon was its iteration in the 4th Edition Tyranid Codex, when it used the "blast marker" rules.

However, it returned to the basic ranged weapon rules with the 5th Edition Codex.

Answer: Warp Lance

The Zoanthrope's Warp Lance, a highly-concentrated bolt of psychic energy, is the best choice to bring down heavy tanks such as the Space Marine Land Raider and the Imperial Guard Leman Russ. Its "lance" characteristic, its armour-piercing AP1 and its high strength of 10 give it the best combination in penetrating thick armour.

The Tyrannofexes' Rupture Cannon, an enormour biocannon that fires a complex salvo of armour-piercing projectiles, is much longer-ranged and has the same maximum strength of 10, but lacks the "lance" characteristic and is only AP4.

The Heavy Venom Cannon, a larger version of the Venom Cannon carried by Hive Tyrants and Carnifexes, fires poison crystals at supersonic speeds capable of crushing light armor. Unfortunately, it is a bit weaker than the previous weapons and only effectively affects vehicles that are not completely enclosed.

The Hive Guard's Impaler Cannon is the weakest of the lot and is only slightly farther-ranged than the Warp Lance.

Answer: Spinefist

Spinefists shoot a hail of spine-like projectiles that rip into a victim's unarmoured body at short range. It connects to the host body with a pneumatic tube that affects the amount of spines shot by the Spinefist, depending on the size of the host organism.

All the other weapons are fielded singly, and each have set statlines.
8. The Barbed Strangler is a specialized Tyranid weapon that shoots out a seed pod. The seed pod rapidly reaches maturity with seconds, ensnaring and strangling any victims within its reach. Which of the following is a larger version of this weapon?

Answer: Stranglethorn Cannon

The Stranglethorn Cannon, introduced in the 5th Edition Codex, is a larger and more powerful version of the Barbed Strangler. Only the largest Tyranid organisms carry it, such as Hive Tyrants, Carnifexes and Harpies.

The Venom Cannon and Rupture Cannon are different weapons, while the Heavy Barbed Strangler does not actually exist.
9. This particular weapon, that Termagants could be armed with, was introduced in the 2nd Edition Tyranid Codex. Officially absent for most of 3rd and 4th edition, it returned as an option for Termagants in the 5th Edition codex. Which of the following is this bioweapon?

Answer: Spike Rifle

The Spike Rifle is a simple bioweapon, consisting of a muscular tube that fires bony spikes. In this fashion, it is similar to the Impaler Cannons carried by the much larger Hive Guard.

Along with the Strangleweb, the Spike Rifle was one of the special weapons that Termagants could be armed with aside from their native Fleshborers. Absent in any of the 3rd and 4th Edition Codexes, this bioweapon was only available in an optional, downloadable ruleset on the Games Workshop website for a while. It returned as a viable, less-powerful but longer-ranged option for Termagants in the 5th Edition Codex released in 2010.

The Devourer only became available to Gaunts with the release of the 3rd Edition Codex. The Pyro-acid Spray and Venom Cannons are bioweapons that are carried by larger Tyranids.
10. The entire range of Tyranid bioweapons include both ranged bioweapons such as projectile launchers and close-combat ones such as claws and talons. Which of the following Tyranids cannot have any ranged weapon symbiotes?

Answer: Broodlord

The Broodlord, simply being a larger version of the ferocious Genestealer, does not have any access to any ranged bioweapon-symbiotes. It simply does not need any - it is a close-combat monster armed with razor-tipped claws, long scything talons and powerful psychic powers.

Gargoyles are typically armed with Fleshborers and in some instances Flamespurts. Raveners have thorax-mounted weapon-symbiotes like Deathspitters and Devourers. Rippers, small as they are, can actually be armed with Spinefists.
