Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Wingspan, you may play birds in one of three habitats. Which of the following is NOT a habitat included on the board?

Answer: Pelagic

Each bird card displays which habitat may be used for that species. Some birds can only live in one habitat, others may live in two or all three - then the strategy includes deciding the best choice for your game play. Pelagic birds (those that fly over the open sea) are included in the "wetland" habitat.
2. There are five types of food available in Wingspan, including seeds, invertebrates, fish, and fruit. What is the fifth type of food available?

Answer: Rodent

Most hawks and eagles require rodent tokens. In addition to the five food types, some birds display a "wild" symbol and thus you may use any type of food token. Hummingbirds, which drink nectar, usually have a "wild" symbol. Vultures which eat carrion often do not require any food to be played. Peregrine falcons, who predominantly eat birds, display a rodent symbol indicating their predatory nature.
3. How many bird cards are dealt to each player at the start of the game?

Answer: 5

Each player begins the game with five bird cards, two bonus cards and one of each type of food. Before the first turn, each player must discard food tokens and bird cards until they have a total (cards plus tokens) of five - for example, you might keep 3 bird cards and 2 food types.
4. During each turn in the game Wingspan, a player may complete one of four actions. Which of the following is the action associated with placing your player marker (a wooden cube) in the grassland?

Answer: Lay eggs

The more bird cards you have already played in a habitat (maximum 5), the higher the yield of a given action. With no bird cards in the grassland, you can lay up to 2 eggs but this rises to 4 with an option of trading food for a fifth egg if five bird cards are present. Each egg is one point at the end of the game, so it adds up! The board game includes a large bag of multicolored wooden eggs to use. Playing an action cube in the forest allows you to obtain food from the birdfeeder, and cubes in the wetlands allow you to draw bird cards. Playing bird cards costs food and sometimes eggs, and your cube is played above the habitats.
5. In the original, North American version of Wingspan, one bird has a significant power - when activated, the player may obtain two food tokens of their choice from the birdfeeder in exchange for an egg. What type of bird is it?

Answer: Raven

The Chihuahuan and Common ravens have this power, and some players think it really makes gameplay uneven and unfair. It is still a matter of luck, as picking up a raven later in the game is not as useful as in one of the early rounds.
6. How many rounds are played in a standard game of Wingspan?

Answer: 4

Gameplay includes 4 rounds. Each round has successively fewer plays for each player - the first round has 7 plays, and the final is down to 4 turns. The wooden cubes are used for scorekeeping for the end of round goals, so it is fairly easy to keep track of the number of turns allowed.
7. There are over 900 species of birds in North America. How many are included in the original version of Wingspan?

Answer: 170

Each bird card has beautiful artwork depicting the bird, an indication of the food "cost" to play the bird, the number of eggs that can be layed on the card, the type of nest the bird constructs, the bird card's "power" (if any) and some information about the bird including its wingspan. The online version of the game includes bird calls as well.
8. The original Wingspan game focused on North American birds. What region was represented in the first expansion pack?

Answer: Europe

The European expansion pack adds 81 birds and some new forms of gameplay, with special end of round bonus opportunities. It was released in late 2019, with the digital version available in 2022. The kit includes 15 purple eggs to add to the pastels from the original set. The new cards should be added to the original set, not played separately.
9. There is a birdfeeder with food dice. When may you re-roll these dice?

Answer: When the feeder is empty, or all dice showing are the same or with a resetting bird power

Sometimes players have difficulty acquiring the food types required to play the bird cards in their hand. Having several ways to change the dice in the feeder helps - the bird cards with the power to re-roll the feeder were added with the European expansion pack, I suspect in response to requests for more ways to reset the feeder.
10. At the end of the game, players add up their scores to determine the winner. Which of the following is NOT generally a tally that is included in the final score?

Answer: Number of bird cards played

It isn't the number of cards played but the value assigned to each bird card that counts. For example, a scissor-tailed flycatcher (the symbol of the game) is worth 8 bird points whereas there are actually birds with zero bird points - they often have other valuable characteristics such as large nest size, inexpensive food cost, etc.

The other items listed are worth one point each. Eggs are the easiest to maximize, although with the right birds tucked cards can really add up as well. Not listed are bonus points from end of round goals, end of round powers and bonus cards.

As much as I know about how to gain points, I still lose to my daughter just about every game - but we really enjoy the play even without winning.
