Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the most common use for a standard size wok?

Answer: stir frying

The wok can be used for all of these purposes, but stir frying is the most common.
2. Name the most common utensils used for wok cooking:

Answer: chahn and hoak

"Chahn" is a Chinese word for spatula and "hoak" is Chinese for ladle.
3. What is almost always the shape the bottom of a wok?

Answer: round

There are some Chinese pans with a wok shape and a flat bottom, but the most common shape by far is the rounded bottom.
4. We all know that the wok is of Asian origin, but from what language so we get the word "wok"?

Answer: Cantonese

According to Wikipedia, "wok" is just one of the Cantonese words for this style of pan; "guo" is the Mandarin word.
5. What makes the wok an ideal instrument for stir frying?

Answer: The shape of the wok allows different foods to be cooked at different temperatures at the same time.

By moving foods up out of the center of the wok toward the outer edge, you can cook them at lower temperatures and, therefore, more slowly.
6. A traditional wok cleaning brush is made of what material?

Answer: bamboo

Bamboo, for all its wooden qualities, is actually a species of grass.
7. What material is most commonly used to make industrially produced woks?

Answer: carbon steel

Clay was one of the materials used to make woks centuries ago, but is not that common anymore. Aluminum woks can conduct heat well, but there are several disadvantages to using aluminum for this type of cooking.
8. What is the most important step of stir frying?

Answer: stirring constantly

Adding all of the ingredients at once may or may not give you the results you desire, but using a lot of oil and/or leaving the wok unattended during cooking can be extremely dangerous.
9. What is considered the "standard" size (in diameter) for a home wok?

Answer: 12-14 inches

Woks that are more than 20 inches in diameter are usually found in restaurants.
10. What style(s) of handle can be found on most woks?

Answer: loop and/or stick

They can both, in fact, be used on a single wok.
