Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Don't miss this capital place

Answer: Jackson

The city of Jackson is the capital of the State of Mississippi. There are several other U.S. cities called Jackson or Jacksonville, but this is the one that is a capital, and is in Miss.
2. Long snouted snapper

Answer: Jacare

The crocodiles called jacares, also known as caimans, are found in Central and South America, from Mexico to Argentina. Some can be up to 20 feet long including the long pointy snout.
3. Scots revolutionaries

Answer: Jacobites

After King James II of Great Britain (James VII of Scotland) was deposed in 1688, his supporters tried to have him restored as King, at least of Scotland and Ireland. Supporters of this movement, known as Jacobites, also in later years raised rebellions in favour of restoring other Stuart Kings: James Francis Edward Stuart (the Old Pretender) in 1715, and Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie, the Young Pretender) in 1745. All these rebellions failed, from the Battle of Killiecrankie in 1689 to Culloden in 1746.

The name comes from the Latin word for James, namely Iacobus.
4. Fancy wood from this tree

Answer: Jacaranda

There are two different genuses of tree commonly called Jacaranda, all found in South America. One type yields various fancy woods, like violet-wood, king-wood, and tiger-wood. The Brazilian type is the source of rose-wood. Fancy woods are scarce and expensive kinds of wood used in furniture making.
5. Prosperity loomed at last in Lyons

Answer: Jacquard

The famous Jacquard loom, used to weave patterned material, was invented by Joseph Marie Jacquard, and first exhibited in 1801. Attempts to introduce it in general use in Lyons were met by destructive mobs, and Jacquard himself was almost killed. Only after the French Government bought the invention did it come into favour, and the subsequent prosperity of Lyons was said to be mainly attributable to Jacquard's invention.
6. Rising Frenchmen?

Answer: Jacquerie

In mid 14th Century, following the battle of Poitiers, French peasantry rose against their lords, committing devastation and outrages especially in North-East France. The common nickname for a French peasant was 'Jacques Bonhomme' which gave rise to the term Jacquerie for this and similar uprisings.
7. Brilliant American bird

Answer: Jacamar

Jacamars are birds found in tropical America, characterised by their brilliant colouring, usually a metallic green above and reddish below. Their beaks are straight and usually black, and they live in damp woods and eat insects. Apparently, according to my very old encyclopaedia, they also have "weak feet" whatever that implies.
8. Influential Frenchmen, debatably

Answer: Jacobins

A club for Breton Assemblymen was started at Versailles in 1789. It later moved to the Dominican convent in Paris (the Jacobin convent, dedicated to St James) which is why it was called the Jacobin Club. It expanded to include many influential men, and became the most prominent revolutionary debating society. Its most famous member was Robespierre.
9. Gregarious Asian and African canines

Answer: Jackals

Jackals, which look like small yellowy-brown wolves, are found in both Asia and Africa. They hunt in packs, although they seldom go for larger prey. They mainly feed on carrion, but may or may not be as cowardly as their reputation suggests. The Egyptian god Anubis had the head of a jackal.
10. This bird is a thieving mimic

Answer: Jackdaw

A small member of the crow family, the jackdaw is a British bird that lives on worms and insects - ugh! It has a reputation for thieving small bright objects, and is also able to be taught to say words.
One of the Ingoldsby Legends is a poem about a jackdaw who stole a cardinal's ring.
