Atreus believed that Theseus was the son of himself and Aethra, daughter of King Pittheus of Troezen, but actually Poseidon was Theseus' biological father. Medea saw Theseus as a threat, because she wanted her son Medus to inherit the throne of Athens. Atreus recognized Theseus just in time to knock the poisoned cup out of his hands.
