Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. She was the daughter of Demeter. She was the Goddess of Spring. She was the one who was kidnapped by Hades and brought to the Underworld. Who is she?

Answer: Persephone

Later, Persephone's mother implores Hades to return Persephone back to earth. However, by then, Persephone has already eaten the food of the dead - six pomegranate seeds - which normally means that she must stay in the Underworld forever. But Persephone's father is Zeus, so Zeus suggests that Persephone stay in the Underworld half the year and above ground the other half.
2. She was the daughter of Metis. She was the Goddess of Wisdom. She was the weaver who competed with the mortal Arachne. Who is she?

Answer: Athena

The story of Athena and Arachne goes as follows: Arachne was a mortal who was a skilled weaver and student of Athena. However, she became vain and boasted that she was better at weaving than Athena and challenged Athena to a weaving competition. Although both were flawless in their technique, the panel of judges chose Athena as the winner as Arachne's attitude remained one of foolish pride and vanity. Arachne was punished by being turned into a spider.

And in fact Athena does have parents. Metis (her mother) was eaten by Zeus when Metis was pregnant. Then Athena popped out of Zeus' head.
3. She was the helper of Ares, and the Goddess of Strife. Many believe it was she who threw the Golden Apple of Discord that lead to the Trojan War. Who is she?

Answer: Eris

At the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, Eris was the only goddess that wasn't invited. As her revenge, she threw the Apple of Discord into the middle of the party where Aphrodite, Athena, and Hera all saw it. The words "To the fairest" were written on the apple and all three goddesses claimed the apple for themselves.

A mortal - Paris - was asked to decide who was really the fairest. Each of the goddesses bribed Paris. Paris chose Aphrodite, whose promise was the most beautiful woman on earth. The Trojan War was the battle over this woman.
4. She was the helper of Hera and the Goddess of Childbirth. In one of her stories, Hera had forbidden her to help Leto's childbirth until the other gods intervened. Who is she?

Answer: Eileithyia

Since Leto was one of Zeus' wives, Hera was jealous. She sent monsters chasing after Leto so that pregnant Leto would not have a place to rest for her childbirth. When Leto finally stayed on a floating island, Hera would not let Eileithyia help her in her childbirth. But the other gods bribed Hera with a beautiful necklace and Hera finally let Eileithyia go.
5. Even though she wasn't a goddess, her story remains one of the most popular. She had released all the evils into the world by opening a special box. She was also the first female human and was married to Epimetheus. Who is she?

Answer: Pandora

Pandora was the first woman on earth and was created by Hephaestus. She was bestowed many gifts from the gods. Zeus gave her the gift of curiosity and also a box that was filled with all the evils. Pandora opened the box and released the evils to the humans. This was Zeus' revenge on the humans having fire which Zeus did not want them to have.
6. She was the most gentle and most peace-loving of all the first six gods and goddesses. As Goddess of the Hearth she gave up her throne to sit by the fire at Mt. Olympus. Many also believe that she was tricked into giving fire to Prometheus. Who is she?

Answer: Hestia

There really is no story of Hestia's since she is so quiet. However, her job is extremely important as she guards the hearth and the home.
7. She was one of the first six goddesses. She was the Goddess of Agriculture. Her famous story included abandoning her job and searching the entire planet for her beloved daughter. Who is she?

Answer: Demeter

Demeter is the mother of Persephone. When Persephone was kidnapped, Demeter searched all over the earth for her. When Persephone was found and the compromise of six months in the Underworld and six months on earth was established, the cycle of the seasons was also established.

In the six months of Persephone staying on earth with Demeter, Demeter happily tended her crops and that was Spring and Summer. The six months that Persephone was away, Demeter neglected the crops, creating Fall and Winter.
8. She was the daughter of Cronus. She was the Goddess of Marriage. She was often jealous of the women her husband favored and often plotted against them. Who is she?

Answer: Hera

One story of Hera's jealousy is when Zeus had fallen in love with a beautiful mortal named Io. Zeus and Io were together when Zeus saw Hera coming. Zeus quickly turned Io into a cow. But Hera came near and was not tricked by the transformation as the cow was exceptionally beautiful.

Hera took the cow, tied it to a tree, and put Argus, a hundred-eyed monster, on guard so the cow (Io) would not escape. Zeus sent Hermes to tell boring stories and play lullabies for Argus. Soon, all of Argus' eyes were closed and Hermes sealed them shut forever.

Then, Hermes changed Io back and took her home.
9. She rose through the foaming sea. She was the Goddess of Love. She won the Golden Apple over Hera and Athena. Who is she?

Answer: Aphrodite

Her story with Psyche was one of her most popular. Psyche was a beautiful mortal and Aphrodite was jealous of her. Aphrodite sent her son Eros to make Psyche fall in love with someone ugly but Eros fell in love with Psyche himself. Eros went to visit Psyche in the dark so that he could hide his identity.

However, Psyche found out who he was and he ran away. Psyche searched all over for Eros and finally went to Aphrodite to ask for help. Aphrodite agreed to bring Psyche to Eros after Psyche finishes a series of almost impossible tasks.

The tasks were designed to make Psyche less beautiful. However, when Psyche finished them, she was actually more beautiful. Psyche was then reunited with her lover.
10. She was the daughter of Leto. She was the Goddess of the Hunt. She turned Actaeon into a stag after he spied on her when she was bathing. Who is she?

Answer: Artemis

Artemis was bathing in a pool with her nymphs when Actaeon came across them when he was walking through the forest. Actaeon was a mortal hunter and prince. Seeing Artemis, instead of looking away, Actaeon hid behind a bush and stared. Artemis found Actaeon spying and she turned him into a stag. Actaeon's own hounds pounced on him and killed him, not knowing it was their master.
