Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I was the mother of the great hero, Achilles. I was a Nereid. Who was I?

Answer: Thetis

Thetis was married to Peleus and they had a child, Achilles. Because Peleus was mortal, Achilles was also born a mortal. Thetis wanted to make him immortal. Therefore, Thetis put him in a fire to burn the mortality away. Peleus thought that Thetis was trying to harm Achilles and therefore stopped it.

Another story says that Thetis dipped Achilles into the River Styx (which turns them immortal) but the part where she held him on, the heel, was not affected by the river's waters. In both stories, though, Achilles' heel was the only vulnerable part of his body.

After Achilles died, Thetis put his ashes into a golden urn and dedicated a memorial to him.
2. I was the mother of Heracles, the son of Zeus. Hera made my life really hard when Heracles was born. Who was I?

Answer: Alcmene

Alcmene was the daughter of Electryon and Anaxo, although some accounts say that her mom was Lysidice or Eurydice. Electryon was the son of Perseus, who was the son of Zeus, making Alcmene the great-granddaughter of Zeus. Zeus wanted to do what he does best (have children with mortals), but Alcmene remained faithful to her husband Amphitryon. Zeus then disguised himself as Amphitryon and took advantage of Alcmene (how low).

A baby was born and, to try to please Hera, the actual couple named him Heracles which meant "Hera's pride".
3. I was formed from the sea foam of Uranus. Many people wooed me, but I had to marry ugly Hephaestus. Who was I?

Answer: Aphrodite

Aphrodite was the love goddess. She was also the first of the Olympian goddesses. When she went to Olympus to claim her throne, many wanted her as a wife. Instead, she was forced by Zeus to marry the crippled Hephaestus. Needless to say, this marriage didn't work out very well. Aphrodite cheated on Hephaestus with another god, Ares.
Aphrodite's Roman form is Venus.
4. I am a goddess of the moon and a goddess of magic. When I'm depicted, there are usually crossroads and dogs. Who am I?

Answer: Hecate

Although Artemis is also a goddess of the moon, she is not, however, a goddess of magic. Hecate also is the goddess of crossroads, ghosts, and necromancy. In other words, she is basically the goddess of all the remaining stuff that the other ones didn't want. She is the daughter of Perses and Asteria, who are Titans.
Hecate's Roman Form is Trivia.
5. I was raped by Zeus one day. To save himself from Hera's wrath, Zeus turned me into a cow. I was given to Hera as a gift, and after a long time, thanks to Hermes, I was able to escape. Who was I?

Answer: Io

Io was just worshipping the gods one day when Zeus swirled down as clouds and took advantage of her. Hera was looking for Zeus and saw an abnormal amount of clouds at the temple where Zeus was. Just as Hera arrived, Zeus turned Io into a white bull and offered it to Hera.

Hera took it and put it into her garden where it was guarded by Argus the hundred-eyed giant. Hermes, sent by Zeus, put all his eyes to sleep simultaneously, then stoned him to death and freed Io.
6. I'm the wife of Perseus. That makes me the daughter of a king and wife of a king. Who am I?

Answer: Andromeda

Andromeda is the daughter of Cepheus and Cassiopeia. Cassiopeia boasted that her daughter was even more beautiful than the Nereids. This offended Poseidon, who sent a monster and demanded that the princess be chained to a rock and eaten. Perseus saved her, however, and they married and had many children.
7. I shouldn't have been so proud of my weaving, otherwise I wouldn't have ended up as the first spider. Who was I?

Answer: Arachne

Arachne was an example of a rags to riches story. She was born into a poor family but soon, because of her weaving, grew famous and rich. Her weaving was so good that some people thought that Athena (who invented weaving) taught her. Arachne had a fatal flaw, though.

She was too proud of herself, and said that she was better than Athena. Arachne challenged Athena to a contest, which was accepted. Arachne won the contest, causing Athena to tear up the offending piece, and beath Arachne with her shittle. Humiliated, Arachne hung herself in shame. Athena took pity on her and turned her into the first spider in the world.
8. I am the oldest of Cronus and Rhea's children. I am the goddess of the hearth. Who am I?

Answer: Hestia

Hestia is the goddess of the hearth and therefore the keeper of the fire on Olympus. The Greeks made offerings to her first when they ate a meal. She swore that she would remain a maiden forever, and rejected marriage proposals from her brother, Poseidon, and her nephew, Apollo.
Hestia's Roman form was Vesta.
9. I was Poseidon's wife and was a goddess of the sea. Who was I?

Answer: Amphitrite

Amphitrite and Poseidon didn't have many notable children, but the most notable would arguably be Triton, a merman. Amphitrite wasn't mentioned much in the stories of Homer, which told her story.
10. I am the goddess of vengeance. I love revenge, and am respected, but also very feared. Who am I?

Answer: Nemesis

Nemesis is the goddess of vengeance, or revenge. She is highly respected by the Olympians, but also causes sorrow in humans. For example, she makes Narcissus fall in love with his own reflection, which leads to his death. Nemesis also curses people that have many gifts and talents. So I guess she could say that, "Revenge is sweet!"
