Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is an ait?

Answer: An island

An ait is actually a small island, usually composed of sediment and sand, especially found in the Thames in England.
2. What type of vestment might you find a Catholic priest wearing?

Answer: Alb

An alb is a long white robe worn by priests, typically underneath other vestments. A bal is a hat worn in Scotland. Aba is a type of clothing made from camel hair in the middle east, and fez is a type of brimless hat.
3. What is obe?

Answer: A form of black magic

Obe, also known as obeah, is a form of voodooism and witchcraft associated with various parts of Africa as well as in the Caribbean. I wonder if Magica da Spell ever practiced it...
4. What word can refer to a mixture as well as a thick kind of Spanish stew?

Answer: Olio

You probably wouldn't want a stew made out of ova (ovum is the singular), which are egg cells. Bern, to the best of my knowledge, isn't a word at all (aside from being a city in Switzerland), and gaol is an older word, from England, meaning a prison. Also of interest, olio, due to its ratio of vowels to consonants, is a cruciverbalist's dream.
5. What is an aal?

Answer: Mulberry tree

This mulberry tree is found in various parts of East India.
6. Which of the following was the first note in the old solfège scale denoting the tonic, and equal to the modern day musical syllable 'DO'?

Answer: ut

Before the well-known (do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti) representation for the notes in the scale, a system that was derived from the Latin hymn Ut queant laxis was used, which was ut, re, mi, fa, sol, la, and si. Although, and this is merely my opinion, ut has to be one of the most unpleasant sounding syllables I've ever heard, perhaps it could be used as a warm-up scale trill for aspiring death metal artists.
7. What does oda mean?

Answer: Room of a harem

An oda is a room within a harem, from Turkish. I must confess to having very little knowledge or experience on the subject, but maybe that's a good thing...
8. What word refers to a French vineyard which is known for producing high-quality wine?

Answer: Cru

Ken refers to the extant of one's knowledge, as in, 'outside of one's ken'. A fon or foehn is a warm wind originating in the lee side of a mountain. Finally, tas is an accumulation of things, a heap or pile.
9. What does the disease gid affect?

Answer: Sheep

Gid is actually a fatal disease which results in loss of balance among both sheep and goats, and is the result of a tapeworm lodged within the brain.
10. Which of the following words refers to a kind of tree?

Answer: Koa

Koa is actually a tree found in Hawaii, and comes from the Hawaiian word meaning 'warrior'. It is also used to make surfboards. A boa is a kind of large snake which constricts its prey. A moa is a large flightless, and unfortunately, extinct bird which was once found in New Zealand. A goa refers to an antelope native to Tibet.
