1. Let us first stop in the Levant, where we find modern day Lebanon and Israel. The ancient Canaanites resided along the eastern coast of the Mediterranean during ancient times. Who was the their god of thunder?

Answer: Baal

Some theologians suggest that the Hebrew God was derived from the this Canaanite deity, and indeed some of the ancient Canaanite stories resemble those found in the Old Testament. Baal later became known as a pagan symbol, rejected by those who pledged their allegiance to the one Hebrew God YHWH.
2. Moving on to western Europe we find those dwellers of the ancient hills known as the Celts. Which of these names refers to the Celtic god of thunder?

Answer: Taranis

The ancient Celtic word 'taran' meant 'thunder' literally, hence the name. Celts from continental Europe to the British Isles worshipped this great and powerful god whose deadly grasp help the power of thunder itself.
3. Now we remove ourselves to the furthest reaches of northern Europe. Indeed, we are so curious about the various gods of thunder from various cultures, why not discover who the Norse god of thunder is. What is his famous name?

Answer: Thor

Surely you have heard of Thor, at least from the comic book series. But Thor is no being to be taken lightly. Rather, his power derives from the sky itself and his hammer Mjolnir is mighty indeed. With one crushing blow of this great weapon his foes might be vanquished, and if this was not adequate, the power of deadly thunder could be trained in the direction of any deserving villain.
4. Let us move now to the far eastern reaches of the Eurasian continent. There we will find the Japanese isles and, more to the point of our quiz, the Japanese god of rice. Who might this be?

Answer: Inari

Inari is represented as a fox. His statues are found before entrances of temples to ward off famine. To this day, Inari is worshipped in some rural areas of Japan by devoted farmers and their protected rice.
5. Now we return once again to western Europe for our final trip of this quiz. Who was the Celtic god that awoke the Earth during spring by striking the ground with his hammer?

Answer: Sucellus
