Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. No Discworld quiz would be complete without a question on Unseen University. So, here it is: what is the more usual name for the University tradition also known as 'Plunkers'?

Answer: Beating the Bounds

Beating the Bounds takes place every 22nd Grune and the entire faculty, along with as many students that can be found awake, walk the ancient boundaries of the University whilst ceremonially hitting any passersby with a live ferret. Any red haired man (except Captain Carrot of the Watch) is grabbed by several students and given 'a plunking'.

After the procession breakfast is eaten in the Great Hall. Duck must be served.
2. Sam Vimes has appeared in many Discworld stories, often staying away from home for long periods. Which story sees him, at least trying to be, home every evening at six o'clock?

Answer: Thud

'Thud' get's its name from a board game which recreates the Battle of Koom Valley which was fought between Trolls and Dwarfs. If Vimes doesn't solve the murder of a Dwarf in Ankh Morpork, it may happen all over again in the city streets. The reason he so desperately tries to get home each day is to read 'Where's My Cow' to his young son, Sam Jr.
3. The Weatherwax family have a long history of the magical arts. Which one was regarded as the black sheep of the family?

Answer: Lily

Esme may be many things, but even Nanny Ogg couldn't describe her as the black sheep of the family. Alison Weatherwax is Granny's grandmother and may still be alive as her death has never been recorded. Galda Weatherwax was a distant cousin of Granny and was a Wizard.

Not just any old Wizard, he was Supreme Grand Conjurer of the Order of the Silver Star, Lord Imperial of the Sacred Staff, Eighth Level Ipsissimus and the 304th Archchancellor of Unseen University. He also smoked a pipe that was the size of a small incinerator.
4. The Discworld continent of XXXX has, by sheer coincidence, a Magical University. This, apparently learned, establishment bears some striking similarities to Unseen University. What is the name of this 'venerable' seat of learning?

Answer: Bugarup University

Bugarup University is the corrugated iron equivalent to Ankh Morpork's UU. Its motto, burned into a thin metal sheet above its gate, is 'Nullus Anxietas'. Around the back is a loose sheet of metal (allowing students to gain access after closing time) with the words Nulli Sheilae Sanguineae chalked on it.

There are rumours that the Wizards wear pointy hats with corks on strings hanging from the brim. Prawns are said to feature large in their lives.
5. The annuls of Discworld history tell us that Death had a daughter. She had silver hair and silver eyes. A combination guaranteed to send a shiver down most men's spines, for whatever reason. What was her name?

Answer: Ysabell

When Ysabell first appears she is already 16 years old and an orphan. Her parents died in the Great Neff and Death, for his own reasons, adopted her. She had a typical teenage relationship with Mort before, finally, marrying him. They had one child before dying in a coach crash. That child was Susan Sto Helit who inherited the title Duchess of Sto Helit from her mother. Susan is a different kettle of fish altogether.
6. As with all things to do with Discworld, the Zodiac revolves around the number eight. How many zodiac signs are 'generally' accepted?

Answer: 64

The Turtle moves, and it only moves forward. Because of this, constellations in front of, and behind, the Turtle change very, very, slowly. The ones to the side though, may well change during a person's lifetime. This does tend to change the astrology of some people to a large degree. Discworld zodiac signs have included the Celestial Parsnip, the Flying Moose, Mubbo the Hyena and Okjock the Salesman.
7. In the novel 'The Thief of Time' Susan Sto Helit comes up against The Auditors. What weapon does she use to defeat them?

Answer: Chocolate

The Auditors do not like randomness and individuality (they're like mini versions of "Star Trek's" Borg, but without the tight fitting uniforms). They persuade a clockmaker to construct a crystal clock which will, once activated, stop time and so remove the unpredictability that humans bring to the Universe.

Their agent is one Myria LeJean . As she understands more and more about humans she turns against the activation of the clock. Because The Auditors have never experienced pleasure, the intense sensations associated with eating chocolate (except coated coffee beans obviously) cause them to self destruct.
8. In which Discworld story do we first encounter the Dark Morris?

Answer: Reaper Man

The Dark Morris is first mentioned in 'Reaper Man' and is danced all in black to welcome the arrival of winter. In 'Wintersmith' Tiffany is taken to see the dance by Miss Treason. She is drawn to it and joins in. She attracts the attention of the Wintersmith who mistakes her for the Summer Lady and decides Tiffany must be his queen.
The Dark Morris may be a reference, by Pratchett, to the traditional Border Morris which is danced in black clothes and with blacked out faces.

Don't mention the stick and bucket dance.
9. The Patrician of Ankh-Morpork's dog, Wuffles, makes an appearance in several Discworld books. In which one does he make his last?

Answer: The Truth

Wuffles first appeared, along with Havelock Vetinari, in the book 'Sourcery'. In this story he is already 16 years old and is described as being a wire haired terrier with halitosis. In 'The Truth 'we learn a little more of Wuffles, particularly that he is an old fashioned dog and thinks of his master as 'God'.
10. The Discworld character Eric has three wishes. Which of the listed wishes is NOT one of them?

Answer: To Talk to The Creator And Ask Why?

Eric Thursley is a young (13 year old) demonologist who, unfortunately, (for him) only manages to summon Rincewind from the Dungeon Dimension. Eric relies heavily on the advice of a parrot, which says a lot about 13 year old boys. Rincewind tries to convince Eric that he is not a demon and can't make things happen with just a snap of his fingers.

The problem for Rincewind is that the Demon Lord Vassenego has decided that he can. Vassenego is leading a secret revolt against the Demon King Astfgl and is using Rincewind and Eric as a diversion.
