Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the beginning of the story, what was the thief looking for?

Answer: A card player

The thief traveled through war-torn Warsaw during World War Two, acting as somewhat of a nomad. He began to hear whispers of a man who played cards. Supposedly, the man had never lost a hand. The thief, who was a gambler himself, wanted to find the man to play.
2. What was the occupation of the man who helped the thief?

Answer: Soldier

The Russian, whose name was Konstantin Vasiliev, admitted that Mamoulian had beaten him easily when he decided to play against him in a game of cards. He warned the thief that Mamoulian never lost, but he still told him where to go. It turned out that Vasiliev owed the card player money. Days later the thief heard that Vasiliev had mysteriously died; his body was found floating face down in a river.
3. What type of tattoos did Marty get while in prison?

Answer: A lightning bolt and the letters "USA"

Marty stayed in jail six years before being released to work for Joseph Whitehead. During his fourth year he grew more depressed than he already was because he was turning thirty. It was then that Marty got a tattoo of a red and blue lightning bolt on his upper left arm and the letters "USA" spelled out in the flesh of his right forearm.
4. Why was Marty in jail in the first place?

Answer: Attempted robbery

Marty had a bad gambling problem. His wife, Charmaine, constantly struggled to live with his addiction. But Marty wouldn't stop gambling, and his debts caught up with him. He tried to steal his way out but was caught. He had served six year before being hired by Whitehead.
5. Which of the guard dogs did Whitehead's dog trainer, Lillian, seem to favor?

Answer: Bella

The guard dogs were large Alsatians. Whitehead brought Marty to the doghouses for two reasons: to get him acclimated with the fierce dogs and to remind him of where Marty had come from. Bella was a beautiful dog; she had given birth to six pups just before he arrived. The dogs were loyal protectors.
6. What items did Toy give Marty?

Answer: Boxing tapes

Both Toy and Marty were former boxers. They had a mutual respect for one another. Toy had even placed boxing tapes for Marty's viewing a private room. Marty spent hours watching classic boxing bouts.
7. Which servant drove Whitehead?

Answer: Luther

Luther was the chauffeur, Toy was Whitehead's aide, and Pearl was the cook. Marty was hired to be the new bodyguard. Luther and Marty didn't get along well because Luther ridiculed Marty for being too much of a brown-noser. Whitehead enlisted Luther to help him stage his own death.
8. What food did Whitehead love to eat?

Answer: Strawberries

Whitehead loved to eat strawberries, and he paid for them to be shipped constantly. He also drank at night to help him sleep, because he was so afraid Mamoulian would return. The first time Marty was allowed to take a day off, he was ordered to purchase strawberries for Whitehead.

After Whitehead staged his death, Marty was able to track him down because he knew his boss could not live without his strawberries.
9. What was Marty's preferred exercise?

Answer: Running

When Marty first arrived at Whitehead's manor, he was slightly flabby and pale. He set to a demanding exercise to get in shape. He ran around the large property and got in shape. Marty also learned his way around the estate by running. Carys loved watching him run about. She referred to him as "Her Runner."
10. What did Breer call himself?

Answer: The Last of the Razor-Eaters

Anthony Breer's story began when he killed himself. He was an evil murderer who was a member of the Tribe of Razor-Eaters. The Last European, Mamoulian, resurrected the murderer and made him his servant. Later Breers' skin was revealed, and his various hooks and rings were exposed.
11. What did Breer douse his skin with?

Answer: Sandalwood

Technically, Breer was dead as he worked for Mamoulian. His decaying flesh began to stink, and Breer's prey fled at the smell. So he bathed several times a day and covered himself with sandalwood. Whenever the scent of sandalwood was detected, Breer was near.
12. Carys possessed sensitive powers.

Answer: True

Carys spent most of her life addicted to drugs and was usually off in her own world. However, she had certain powers. When she was near Marty, she could pick up his emotions, and even his thoughts. She helped Mamoulian find Toy and Whitehead by using her powers.
13. What happened when Mamoulian first tried to get to Whitehead?

Answer: The guard dogs attacked him

The first night Mamoulian attempted to reach Whitehead, the guard dogs came to the rescue. Marty realized the lights were off and the security cameras were broken, and ran outside to witness the dogs fighting Mamoulian. They managed to rip a finger and a half off of his hand. He fled after Marty called the dogs off.
14. Whitehead staged his own death. What song was played at Whitehead's funeral?

Answer: Fools Rush In

A saxophonist played a loud rendition of "Fools Rush In," a last joke from Joseph. Marty, Mamoulian, and Carys attended the funeral separately, and each visited for their own reasons. Marty was shocked when he realized he was saddened at the news of Whitehead's death. It was a ploy to fool Mamoulian.
15. Why did Marty throw up in Mamoulian's basement?

Answer: He discovered a murder victim

Marty snuck into Mamoulian's house while he was away and tried to free Carys. Before they left, Breer returned and the two fled to the cellar. There, Marty found a plate, napkin, knife, and fork next to a dead girl. He then remembered eating an odd meat earlier and threw up.
16. Breer disobeyed Mamoulian and was punished. What chore did Breer not complete?

Answer: He didn't burn evidence

Mamoulian wanted no trace of his existence in the house he stayed at on Caliban Street. So, he ordered Breer to burn his books, pack of cards, and anything else that remained. Instead of burning the evidence, Breer sneaked out of the house and tried to attack Carys.
17. Who rescued Breer from his punishment?

Answer: A little girl

For his punishment, Mamoulian informed Breer that he was dead; the man didn't even know, even though his flesh was rotted and flies made a home in his face. Breer was tied to a bed and left alone. Eventually a neighbor came to his rescue. She untied his hands for him, since she had no clue that Breer made a habit of murdering and devouring children.
18. What was the occupation of the two men Mamoulian hypnotized?

Answer: They were recruiters for a church

Chad and Tom came to the house Mamoulian resided in. They were hypnotized into believing that the Apocalypse was near. The two young churchmen served Mamoulian blindly, even going as far as murdering for him. Mamoulian called them Saint Chad and Saint Tom.
19. What year did Carys and Marty learn Mamoulian was alive in?

Answer: 1811

Mamoulian's past revealed that he was alive in the year 1811. He was a soldier in a foreign war and was almost killed. A monk offered to teach him the spells he possessed. Mamoulian learned them all and was still alive almost two hundred years later.
20. Mamoulian managed to kill Whitehead.

Answer: True

Throughout the entire story, Mamoulian tried to get to Whitehead and force him to go into the afterlife with him. Marty and Carys managed to stop him time and time again, but fate finally caught up to Whitehead. Mamoulian killed him and was then killed by both Breer and Marty.
