Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What terrorist group was formed when the Federation ceded several colony worlds to the Cardassian Union?

Answer: The Maquis

The Maquis chose their name as a reference to the French guerrilla fighters during the Second World War. Knowing that they wanted to have a basis for tension on the crew of "Voyager", the Maquis were introduced into the "Star Trek" universe prior to the launch of the series in both "TNG" and "DS9".

Question by reedy
2. What was the first name of Lt. Reed, who was the armory officer aboard the NX-01 Enterprise?

Answer: Malcolm

Lt Reed came from a long line of military officers, however his ancestors all worked in the Royal Navy. Malcolm was unable to continue in this tradition as he was aquaphobic. After joining Starfleet, he joined Section 31 before joining Captain Archer's crew.

Question by Daddy19
3. In the third season of "Star Trek: Enterprise", some non-Starfleet personnel also joined the NX-01's crew. Led by Major Hayes, who were these people?

Answer: MACOs

MACO stands for Military Assault Command Operations, an organization separate to Starfleet. Major Hayes and Lt. Reed initially did not get along as Reed felt that the Major was trying to replace him as tactical officer. In the mirror universe, however, Reed had actually joined the MACOs as opposed to Starfleet.

Question by Daddy19
4. What sword-like blade, about half the length of a bat'leth, did Worf like to use on "TNG" and "DS9"?

Answer: Mek'leth

Kut'luches and QhonDocs were very similar dagger-like blades, typically used by assassins, while the d'k tahg was more commonly used - a traditional Klingon blade, often bearing the symbol of one's House.

Question by reedy
5. What was the name of the character who was regularly seen at Quark's bar on "Deep Space Nine"?

Answer: Morn

Many of the characters on "DS9" mentioned that Morn was quite talkative and it was difficult to get him to be quiet. Having said this, Morn never actually spoke during any of "DS9's" run.

Morn was an anagram of, and named after Norm, the character from "Cheers".

Question by Daddy19
6. Choose which episode of "Star Trek (TOS)" is being described. The "Enterprise" encounters a planet that looked exactly like Earth but on that planet they find only children and no adults. It turns out that a deadly plague had killed all the adults "grups" and left only the children ("onlies") alive. When the children reach puberty they too turn into "grups" becoming horribly disfigured, crazy, and violent until they die. The landing party, discovers to their horror, they (except Spock) have contracted this disease and time is running out for them.

Answer: "Miri"

Miri, whom the episode is named after, is the young pre-teen who develops a crush on Captain Kirk. Miri is played by Kim Darby, of "True Grit" fame, the original 1969 movie also starring John Wayne and Glen Campbell.

In the course of this episode Miri also has the beginning signs of this deadly disease since she had reached puberty.

Well, I don't want to give away the whole episode, but McCoy and Spock figure out that this disease was a horrible side-effect of a "Life Prolongation" project whose purpose was to unimaginably extend human life.

Question by christi_dove
7. What was the name of the name of Grand Nagus Zek's servant?

Answer: Maihar'du

Maihar'du was a Hupyrian, a race who have an exceptional level of devotion to their masters and take a vow of silence only to speak to them. Having said this, Quark visited the Celestial Temple in "DS9" to find out what happened to Zek. Whilst he was there, one of the Prophets assumed Maihar'du's image at which time he spoke to Quark.

Question by Daddy19
8. Captain Picard pretended to be Mot, the barber, on "The Chase" episode of "Star Trek: TNG", in order to disguise his true identity from the criminals who got on board.

Answer: False

Actually the episode in which Picard pretended to be Mot the barber was "Starship Mine." This fan favorite was a very action oriented episode reminiscent of the "Die Hard" movies - Picard alone against many invaders. The criminals were after a toxic substance called trilithium that was highly explosive and could be sold on the black market for a lot of money.

Question by christi_dove
9. Whilst traveling through an area of space the nicknamed "The Void" due to its lack of interstellar phenomena, the crew of USS Voyager encountered a species that was dumping their waste. What was the name of this species?

Answer: Malon

Whilst the Malon had developed anti-matter technology, they had not developed a way of recycling the hazardous by-products that resulted. They therefore had a competitive waste management industry, which resulted in Controller Emck dumping his cargo of waste in "The Void". Unfortunately, this resulted in the indigenous species contracting theta radiation poisoning.

Question by Daddy19
10. The unsavory character of Harry Mudd appeared in two "TOS" episodes: "I, Mudd" and "Mudd's Women." Although known as Harry, what was Mudd's full name?

Answer: Harcourt Fenton Mudd

"Mudd's Women" was a first season "TOS" episode where con-man Mudd was caught transporting women that had been artificially enhanced with a drug to seem beautiful. They were to be married to colonists. "I, Mudd" was broadcast in the second season of "TOS", and reintroduced Mudd, this time as the supreme ruler of a planet of beautiful android women. In actuality, he was their prisoner, and desperate to leave.
