Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is so special about the 'Murder on the Orient Express'?

Answer: Poirot covers the real murderer(s)

One of the most famous novels. Poirot solves the mystery, but he doesn't make the solution public - he pretends not to know the murderer. It's a great reflection on what justice means...
2. A Prima Donna sings the role of 'Tosca' for the last time, using the performance to kill the singer who plays Scarpia. Which short story is it?

Answer: Swan Song

The singer has done something to the Prima Donna which is similar to what Scarpia does to Tosca in the opera. The diva uses the opera for her vengeance, identifying with Tosca. An 'unusual' story, but very interesting.
3. Which novel takes place in Ancient Egypt?

Answer: Death Comes As The End

'Death On The Nile', one of Poirot's most famous cases, also takes place in Egypt, but not in ANCIENT Egypt. 'Death Comes As The End' deals with several deaths in the family of Imhotep, a priest, who married a young woman none of his children likes. As she gets murdered, it is clear that it was a member of the family who did it...
4. Who committed 'The ABC Murders'?

Answer: Franklin Clarke

Franklin invented the 'ABC murderer' to cover the one murder he wanted to commit, so everyone thought, Carmichael Clarke was just another victim picked by his initials CC.
5. What do 'The Murder of Roger Ackroyd' and 'Endless Night' have in common?

Answer: the I-narrator was in both novels the murderer

I'd never have thought that Agatha would use the same trick twice, that's why I always suspect the I-narrator when I read a new novel (unless it's Hastings). 'Endless Night' isn't a Poirot novel, the narrator is Mike Rogers who marries Ellie, a rich girl from America. A very interesting novel about a gypsy curse. 'Roger Ackroyd' is another very famous Poirot novel.
6. Which of the following short stories does NOT contain supernatural aspects?

Answer: The Mystery of the Blue Jar

There are a few stories which really deal with paranormal subjects. The 'Blue Jar' seems to be one of them, but in the end it becomes clear that there wasn't anything supernatural to it. The others really deal with ghosts and angels...
7. What was Tommy's and Tuppence's first case?

Answer: The Secret Adversary

Great novel. Rather a spy story than a crime story.
8. 'The Tuesday Night Club' is collection of stories, all told by one of Miss Marple's friends and relatives. Who tells the story of 'The Blood-Stained Pavement'?

Answer: Joyce Lempriere

It is hinted that Joyce and Raymond, Miss Marple's nephew, are getting married. Yet the name of Raymond's wife in the later novels is Joan, not Joyce, but she's an artist, too. Maybe a mistake - or Raymond favors artists. Joyce's story is about a marriage impostor who marries from time to time a rich woman and then kills her - with help from his real wife.
9. Who killed Eleanor Vansittart in 'Cat Among The Pigeons'?

Answer: Miss Chadwick

Ann Shapland was the 'cat', but she didn't kill Miss Vansittart. Miss Chadwick did it without really thinking about it, because she thought then she would become Miss Bulstrode's successor. It is hinted in the book by the way the scene is written...
10. Which case involves the following characters: Poirot, Sir Charles Cartwright, 'Egg' Lytton-Gore, Sir Bartholomew Strange?

Answer: Three Act Tragedy

Three victims, all killed by pure nicotine. In the movie, Tony Curtis played Charles Cartwright.
11. 'The Mysterious Affair At Styles': Did Alfred Inglethorp kill his wife?

Answer: Yes

Agatha's first novel. Inglethorp was the only suspect at first, but then, an alibi was revealed. Only Poirot saw what this led to, and he could prevent Inglethorp from being accused before the alibi came up. But Inglethorp WAS the murderer - he just wanted to be arrested, because in England, he couldn't have been accused twice for the same crime. So if he had been arrested and then cleared, they couldn't have charged him of the same crime again. Clever...
12. Amyas Crale was obviously killed by his wife Caroline. Caroline died in jail, but before, she swore to her daughter Carla that she was innocent. Sixteen years after the crime, Carla wants Poirot to reconsider the case. Which novel is it?

Answer: Five Little Pigs

One of my favorites. Poirot really solves the case with no basis but five reports of what had happened back then.
13. Did Poirot and Miss Marple ever meet?

Answer: No

Agatha didn't want them to meet. She thought they wouldn't get along very well. Their worlds were too different...
14. Who was the murderer in 'Sleeping Murder'?

Answer: Dr. Kennedy

Another one of my favorites. A young couple, Giles and Gwenda, moves to a house in Dillmouth, and Gwenda starts to realize that she lived there for a short time when she was a toddler. Slowly, the memories come back - and she understands that she had witnessed a murder there. Though there is no body to be found and no report about a sudden death, Giles and Gwenda start to investigate, together with Miss Marple...
15. True or false: 'Easy To Kill' is a Miss Marple novel?

Answer: False

'Easy to Kill' takes place in Wychwood, a village in England. Luke Fitzwilliam hears from an old lady on a train that there are strange things going on, and that she is going to tell Scotland Yard about a special person with the 'evil eye'. When Luke learns that this lady had an accident, he becomes curious and goes to Wychwood to find out about what had happened there.
16. How many victims are there in 'A Murder Is Announced'?

Answer: 3

Rudi Scherz, Dora 'Bunny' Bunner, and Amy Murgatroyd.
17. Who of the following characters from 'Hercule Poirot's Christmas' is NOT related to Simeon Lee?

Answer: Pilar Estravados

The real Pilar was Simeon Lee's granddaughter, but she was killed in an accident. Her friend Conchita Lopez pretended to be Pilar and came to the Lee's house. Stephen and Sudgen are both illegitimate sons of Simeon, and David is a 'real' son.
18. Poirot's best friend is Arthur Hastings. In which of the following stories does Hasting NOT appear at all?

Answer: The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding

Poirot has to solve the pudding problem alone. Though Hastings doesn't help solving the Chcolate Box problem, either, he appears in the story. The other two cases are just another example of Poirot's and Hastins' great team work.
19. Who solves 'The Mystery of the Blue Train'?

Answer: Poirot

One of the earlier cases about the death of a millionaire's daughter.
20. Who was the murderer in 'The Seven Dials Mystery'?

Answer: Jimmy Thesiger

A very interesting novel, one of Superintendent Battle's cases. Partly very funny!
21. Who was the first victim in 'And Then There Were None'?

Answer: none of these

Anthony Marston was the first to die.
22. Which of the 'Labours of Hercules' deals with a schoolgirl who vanished?

Answer: Girdle of Hippolyta

'The Labours of Hercules' is a collection of twelve stories. Poirot decides to retire and solve only twelve more cases which relate somehow to the twelve labours of the greek hero. It's worth reading! Fortunately, Poirot didn't retire after the twelfth case.
23. In which short story does the wall-paper in the victim's room play an important role?

Answer: The Blue Geranium

Another story from 'The Tuesday Night Club' about a hypochondriac woman who was told by a fortune-teller that she was going to die as soon as a blue geranium would appear in her room. Her wall-paper was covered with painted flowers - and when her body is found, one of the geraniums has turned blue...
24. 'Lord Edgware Dies' - who killed him?

Answer: Jane Wilkinson

Another very famous novel about the death of an actress's husband. Lovely Jane Wilkinson had said before that she would kill him if he didn't agree with the divorce. But not even Poirot thinks in the beginning that she really did it...
25. Which novel deals with the story of Nick Buckley?

Answer: Peril At End House

Magdala 'Nick' Buckley lives alone in the 'End House'. During the last days, several rather strange things have happened to her, and Poirot wonders if there is someone who might want to kill her...
