Although the Buck's head emblem indicated that Fitz was of the Royal line, the red thread sewn across the badge signified that he was a bastard, and not of the true royal line. Burrich and the other men of arms had a leaping Buck as their emblem.

Solicity was the Skillmaster in Buckkeep prior to Galen. It was doubtful that she would have named Galen as her successor if she had lived.

Slink is the name of Chade's pet weasel. Slink would dance for a sausage.

Fedwren was impressed with Fitz's writing ability and offered Fitz the opportunity for a life outside the keep. Fitz had never thought of leaving Buckkeep before and is unsure of what decision to make. However, once he talks to Chade, it is clear there is no decision.

As a bastard of the royal line, he must stay within the protection of the keep. Incidently Fitz would never have been offered a job with the hawks; according to Burrich the hawks did not like Fitz as he did not keep himself to himself.

Fedwren sends Fitz to the market in Buckkeep town to buy supplies. A young woman in the market shouts 'Keppet' at him but is quickly shushed by an older woman. Fitz assumes that the woman is merely shouting in a strange language and does not recognise it as his own name.

Molly believes Fitz to be the scribe's apprentice and asks him to read some tablets that her dead mother had written. One of the tablets was a message from Molly's mother to Molly where her mother calls her Molly Nosegay.

Fitz meets Verity riding up to Buckkeep where Verity bluntly tells him that Chivalry is dead. Fitz is confused of what to feel as he had never met his father, but Burrich is deeply upset and cuts his and Fitz's hair in mourning.

Fitz is sent to Neatbay by Chade, and is chagrined to discover he is the page of the pungent Lady Thyme for the journey's length. (Although Fitz did spend some time in Moonseye when his grandfather left him there in Chivalry's care, he was not an assassin's apprentice at the time.)

Verity is annoyed that politics and his skilling prevent him from spending the time he wants to with his wolfhound. On arrival at Neatbay, when Fitz's services to Lady Thyme are no longer needed, Verity enlists Fitz's help with Leon.

Fitz meets a panicked Lady Grace and her choking dog in the kitchens late at night. After saving the dog's life, Fitz instructs the Lady in its proper care. He also asks Grace to ask her husband to divert funds he was spending on ornaments for her to defence of the Six Duchies.

Fitz was left alone near Forge and was meant to await Galen's skill touch to instruct him how to return to the keep. Fitz waits, but the call never comes, and he decides that he has failed the task. It is probable that Galen did not attempt to contact Fitz at all. The fact that Fitz was the only skill trainee left without a horse to return on, indicates Galen wanted him to fail.

Fitz feels Smithy being injured when he is near Forge, and immediately begins to return to Buckkeep. He also feels when Smithy dies.

Although all of these occurred, Burrich only figured out that the two had actually bonded, and were not just master and pet, when Fitz came to visit Burrich after Burrich's attempted murder. Burrich tells Fitz that Smithy died quickly, but Fitz contradicts him, and says that Smithy did not die quickly, but he died well.

It is then that Burrich figures out the existence of the wit bond between the two.

In the Mountain Kingdom the ruler is not seen as aloof and better than their people, but instead, is the people's servant, one who is willing to sacrifice all that is needed for the sake of the people, even their lives, if deemed necessary.
