Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the book, where does Fitz's grandfather leave him?

Answer: Moonseye

Fitz's grandfather hands him over to a guard who is given charge of Fitz until Chivalry returns to claim him. This guard, Jason, then hands Fitz over to Burrich's care.
2. Fitz manages to sneak down to Buckkeep town where he befriends a group of children. They give him the nickname 'Newboy'. What nickname does Molly have in the group - "Molly_______"?

Answer: Nosebleed

Some of Fitz's happiest memories are of this time spent, carefree, with the other children in the town.
3. What does Burrich catch Fitz and Nosey stealing in the town?

Answer: Sausages

Burrich seems to catch Fitz at the worst possible moment, with Fitz and Nosy running through Buckkeep with a string of stolen sausages. It is at this point that Burrich suspects Fitz and Nosy have bonded.
4. What is the name of the Weaponmaster at Buckkeep?

Answer: Hod

Although originaly a smith, Hod was appointed Weaponmaster at Buckkeep, however, she still worked the forge, and her swords were prized possessions. Both Verity and Chivalry's swords were forged by Hod.
5. Fitz and Molly initially hung around with a group of children but one boy in particular becomes their close friend. What is his name?

Answer: Kerry

Fitz, Molly and Kerry spend time drinking cheap beer in seedy taverns in the town. Kerry eventually moves away to become an apprentice puppeteer.
6. Although Fitz begins his life in Buckkeep living with Burrich in the stables, he is given a room in the keep when King Shrewd decides that he should be taught by Chade. Which King is featured in the tapestry in Fitz's room?

Answer: Wisdom

Fitz found the large dusty tapestry of King Wisdom and the Elderlings quite scary as a boy. However, it remained one of the only decorations in Fitz's room throughout his stay there.
7. Fitz is presented with his own set of clothes which had the Buck's head crest on them (prior to being given the charging buck's head as his own emblem). What colour thread was sewn through the buck to signify Fitz was a bastard?

Answer: Red

Although the Buck's head emblem indicated that Fitz was of the Royal line, the red thread sewn across the badge signified that he was a bastard, and not of the true royal line. Burrich and the other men of arms had a leaping Buck as their emblem.
8. There was no true Skillmaster in Buckkeep throughout much of Fitz's life. Although Galen assumed the title he had not been trained enough to be a Skillmaster. What was the name of the last true Skillmaster in Buckkeep, the trainer of Galen?

Answer: Solicity

Solicity was the Skillmaster in Buckkeep prior to Galen. It was doubtful that she would have named Galen as her successor if she had lived.
9. Chade has had a fair few furry friends sharing his lonely existence in the castle. What was the name of the weasel that Chade had when Fitz first became his apprentice?

Answer: Slink

Slink is the name of Chade's pet weasel. Slink would dance for a sausage.
10. Although Fitz is an assassin's apprentice, another member of Buckkeep offers him an apprenticeship. What was this apprenticeship in?

Answer: Scribing

Fedwren was impressed with Fitz's writing ability and offered Fitz the opportunity for a life outside the keep. Fitz had never thought of leaving Buckkeep before and is unsure of what decision to make. However, once he talks to Chade, it is clear there is no decision.

As a bastard of the royal line, he must stay within the protection of the keep. Incidently Fitz would never have been offered a job with the hawks; according to Burrich the hawks did not like Fitz as he did not keep himself to himself.
11. In this book Fitz first learns his real name; what is it?

Answer: Keppet

Fedwren sends Fitz to the market in Buckkeep town to buy supplies. A young woman in the market shouts 'Keppet' at him but is quickly shushed by an older woman. Fitz assumes that the woman is merely shouting in a strange language and does not recognise it as his own name.
12. What name did Molly's mother give her - "Molly______"?

Answer: Nosegay

Molly believes Fitz to be the scribe's apprentice and asks him to read some tablets that her dead mother had written. One of the tablets was a message from Molly's mother to Molly where her mother calls her Molly Nosegay.
13. Who tells Fitz of his father's death?

Answer: Verity

Fitz meets Verity riding up to Buckkeep where Verity bluntly tells him that Chivalry is dead. Fitz is confused of what to feel as he had never met his father, but Burrich is deeply upset and cuts his and Fitz's hair in mourning.
14. What is the name of the first place the young assassin's apprentice visits outside Buckkeep?

Answer: Neatbay

Fitz is sent to Neatbay by Chade, and is chagrined to discover he is the page of the pungent Lady Thyme for the journey's length. (Although Fitz did spend some time in Moonseye when his grandfather left him there in Chivalry's care, he was not an assassin's apprentice at the time.)
15. What was the name of Verity's wolfhound?

Answer: Leon

Verity is annoyed that politics and his skilling prevent him from spending the time he wants to with his wolfhound. On arrival at Neatbay, when Fitz's services to Lady Thyme are no longer needed, Verity enlists Fitz's help with Leon.
16. Fitz manages to complete his first mission without killing anyone. Whose dog does he save from choking "Lady_____"?

Answer: Grace

Fitz meets a panicked Lady Grace and her choking dog in the kitchens late at night. After saving the dog's life, Fitz instructs the Lady in its proper care. He also asks Grace to ask her husband to divert funds he was spending on ornaments for her to defence of the Six Duchies.
17. What town was Fitz left near on his skill test?

Answer: Forge

Fitz was left alone near Forge and was meant to await Galen's skill touch to instruct him how to return to the keep. Fitz waits, but the call never comes, and he decides that he has failed the task. It is probable that Galen did not attempt to contact Fitz at all. The fact that Fitz was the only skill trainee left without a horse to return on, indicates Galen wanted him to fail.
18. Who was Smithy protecting when he died?

Answer: Burrich

Fitz feels Smithy being injured when he is near Forge, and immediately begins to return to Buckkeep. He also feels when Smithy dies.
19. How did Burrich discover Smithy and Fitz were bonded?

Answer: Fitz knew that Smithy had not died quickly

Although all of these occurred, Burrich only figured out that the two had actually bonded, and were not just master and pet, when Fitz came to visit Burrich after Burrich's attempted murder. Burrich tells Fitz that Smithy died quickly, but Fitz contradicts him, and says that Smithy did not die quickly, but he died well.

It is then that Burrich figures out the existence of the wit bond between the two.
20. What was the name the Mountain Kingdom's people called their king or queen?

Answer: Sacrifice

In the Mountain Kingdom the ruler is not seen as aloof and better than their people, but instead, is the people's servant, one who is willing to sacrifice all that is needed for the sake of the people, even their lives, if deemed necessary.
