Alyssa Reed is ten years old. She thinks she lives a perfect life. Then her new baby sister, Lila Rose, is stillborn. That's when Blister finds out her life isn't as perfect as it seems. Her parents both fight constantly and her mother suspects that her father is having an affair. The family moves from their farm to an apartment, and then Alyssa's dad moves to another apartment.

Alyssa had a cat named Fiona. But the new apartment didn't allow pets, so she had to give Fiona away. Alyssa is upset about moving because she loved the animals and her friends. "Blister" finds a note in the pocket of one of the jeans at her father's house. It is from somebody named Tamara. She tells her grandmother because she doesn't want to hurt her mom's feelings by telling her about Tamara. Daisy G. says that she doesn't like the name Tamara because it spells trouble. This is ironic because one of the shirts "Blister" took says "Trouble" on it.

"Blister" is bike riding with her father and sees some people from school. They tell her that they are going to practice for cheerleading because tryouts are coming up. She decides to go and try out, but she wants to practice at Bylinda's house. At first everyone is surprised she's there, but then they like her because she's good at cheerleading.

The principal gets mad at "Blister" because she comes in wearing one of Tamara's fancy outfits. She is wearing a lot of makeup, a mini skirt, and ridiculously high heels. Her mom didn't know she wore heels because "Blister" changed when she left the house. The principal tells her that she has to take the shoes off.

Jess is the best cheerleader, besides "Blister". She is so good that everyone says they think she'll make it. Jess knows she's the best and doesn't even practice. She is the only one who can walk up the steps on her hands. Jess is so snobby that she says she doesn't even know if she'll have time for cheerleading this year.

Sara Barton is always in a depressed mood. She tells "Blister" at the beginning of the year that "Blister" won't fit in because she's a new girl and they don't like new people. Then she says that "Blister" won't make the cheerleading squad because even though she was one of the best, she isn't popular enough to get a lot of votes.

She is wearing her old cheerleading uniform and got her hair cut to the way it had been before she married Jack Reed, "Blister"'s father.

"Blister" doesn't make the cheerleading squad. Even though she was the best, nobody voted for her because she wasn't popular enough. She didn't even vote for herself because she didn't want to seem desperate. Though the story has a sad end, it is still very good.
