Question 1 of 10
1. In the movie only Frodo is invited to look into the mirror of Galadriel while in Lorien. In the book Sam is also permitted to look. What does he see? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. During the gift scene (on the extended version) Galadriel gives Sam a coil of Elven rope, which comes into use during the second movie. What does she give him in the book? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. As we just discussed, Sam is given Elven rope from Galadriel in the movie but that's not true to the book. This leads to another question. Where DOES he get the rope from (according to the book)? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. Also in the gift scene: In the movie, Galadriel mentions that there is nothing she can give Aragorn that would be more precious than the piece of jewelery that Arwen had already given him. In the book it is actually Galadriel (Arwen's Grandmother) who gives him the piece of jewelery.

Question 5 of 10
5. Since we are on the topic of Arwen's necklace, what you see in the movie is not what Tolkien described in the book. While Peter Jackson's prop team made a lovely piece of jewelry, how did Tolkien describe the necklace? (Note: These options are paraphrased versions of the actual description and not quotes taken from the book. He used far more detail.) Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. In the movies the world around Frodo changes when he puts on the ring. Everything becomes blurred, scary and windy like some kind of fantasy world. In the books that's not the case. What is it really like when he puts on the ring? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. In the movie, Frodo had never worn the ring before his "accident at the Prancing Pony". This is accurate to the book. True or False?

Question 8 of 10
8. In the movie, Sam could clearly see Frodo in his boat as he tried to leave the fellowship on his own. In the books he was wearing the ring making him invisible. How did Sam know Frodo was leaving? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. In the movie, Boromir's dead body is put in a punt and sent down river with his sword on his chest and his shield at his head. That is true to the book except there were other things in the boat with him. What were they? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. In the movie there is a brief scene of Aragorn putting on Boromir's gauntlets after sending the dead body down the river. Is this true to the book?

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the movie only Frodo is invited to look into the mirror of Galadriel while in Lorien. In the book Sam is also permitted to look. What does he see?

Answer: He sees the Shire being burned

It is actually Sam who sees the Shire and the party tree being burned to the ground and all hobbits being enslaved. Some of you may remember that as being what Frodo saw when he looked into the mirror in the movie, but in the book he sees something else entirely.
2. During the gift scene (on the extended version) Galadriel gives Sam a coil of Elven rope, which comes into use during the second movie. What does she give him in the book?

Answer: A little box of earth and a seed

She gives him a little box of Lorien soil because she knows he loves to work in the garden. She knows a little more than that but I don't want to spoil anything for you so you'll have to read the books or wait till the next quiz.
3. As we just discussed, Sam is given Elven rope from Galadriel in the movie but that's not true to the book. This leads to another question. Where DOES he get the rope from (according to the book)?

Answer: It's in one of the boats and he grabs it

There were coils of Elven rope in each of the boats the fellowship used to forge the River Anduin. Sam stuffed one of them in his pack, because he'd been berating himself since leaving the Shire for not grabbing some rope.
4. Also in the gift scene: In the movie, Galadriel mentions that there is nothing she can give Aragorn that would be more precious than the piece of jewelery that Arwen had already given him. In the book it is actually Galadriel (Arwen's Grandmother) who gives him the piece of jewelery.

Answer: True

She was entrusted with it as it held the symbolic key to Arwen's immortality. She gave it to Aragorn because she could see that without it, he would fail.
He used far more detail.)

Answer: A green and silver brooch that looked like an eagle

The book describes it quite well...it sounds kind of "gaudy" to me. Guess the costume designers didn't think it was right for the screen.
6. In the movies the world around Frodo changes when he puts on the ring. Everything becomes blurred, scary and windy like some kind of fantasy world. In the books that's not the case. What is it really like when he puts on the ring?

Answer: The world looks the same as it always does.

The world looks the same as any other time with the exception of the wraiths, who are shown beyond their dark shrouds. In fact, there were times, when Bilbo first found the ring, that he would be wearing it and not even realize he was invisible.
7. In the movie, Frodo had never worn the ring before his "accident at the Prancing Pony". This is accurate to the book. True or False?

Answer: False

He actually used the ring many times before that over the years, in the same manner that Bilbo had: ie. to hide from unwanted visitors or play jokes on his friends.
8. In the movie, Sam could clearly see Frodo in his boat as he tried to leave the fellowship on his own. In the books he was wearing the ring making him invisible. How did Sam know Frodo was leaving?

Answer: He arrived as Frodo was pushing the boat into the water (boats don't do that by themselves)

Frodo did use an oar to go back and rescue Sam from drowning while he was still wearing the ring but that was after Sam had dove into the water after him.
9. In the movie, Boromir's dead body is put in a punt and sent down river with his sword on his chest and his shield at his head. That is true to the book except there were other things in the boat with him. What were they?

Answer: The broken weapons and shields of the orcs he'd killed

They placed in all the weapons and shields of the orcs he'd killed as a tribute to him and how he fought. They also placed his horn of Gondor, which had been cloven in two, in the boat.
10. In the movie there is a brief scene of Aragorn putting on Boromir's gauntlets after sending the dead body down the river. Is this true to the book?

Answer: no

Aragorn putting on Boromir's gauntlets was actually one of the many little artistic touches that Viggo Mortinsen came up with all on his own and suggested to Peter Jackson. Pete liked almost all of them so there are a lot of little things like that, especially in the extended version. And to think Viggo wasn't even going to accept the role. That would have been a tragedy! Hope you like it. Be sure to try my "Two Towers" Movie vs. Book tests.
