As quoted from "The Fellowship of the Ring", 'like butter that has been scraped over too much bread'. This is an effect of being too close to the One Ring. It seemed to enlongate Bilbo's life while ebbing his strength of will, and a break from the Ring was exactly the remedy. Gandalf just barely succeeded in pulling this off, almost being drawn to the Ring himself.

Answer: Brandybuck

He was the son of Drogo Baggins and Primula Brandybuck. He was orphaned at a very young age when his parents drowned in the Brandywine River, as their boat capsized and they didn't know how to swim.

Answer: Mr. Underhill

"The name of Baggins is not to be used" says Frodo upon entering Bree, but unknown to the hobbit-party, they are overheard by a shadowy character.

Answer: Strider

Strider is the name that he gives to the Hobbits in Bree, and the most common of his nicknames. The others we learn along the way. Aragorn is the true heir to the throne of Gondor and Arnor, and he eventually claims the title of King.

Answer: A black rider

The hobbits stumble across Gildor and his exiles while leaving the Shire, but they are first almost caught by a black rider, twice. Frodo gets the urge to put on the Ring for the first time, and barely manages to hold out.

Answer: mushrooms

Frodo Baggins as a youngster had already got caught stealing mushrooms... but this time Farmer Maggot notices the name of Baggins for another reason entirely.

Answer: Pippin

Merry was born in 1382, Pippin in 1390, Frodo in 1368 and Sam in 1380, all dates in Shire Reckoning. Frodo tries to use this fact to get in the tub at Crickhollow first, not knowning that there are three tubs in the little house.

Answer: Tom Bombadil

Tom 'runs' the old forest, all trees living there heed his words, even if they are as black-hearted and rotten as Old Man Willow. Tom is "eldest and fatherless" as Elrond put it, and is one of the greater enigmas in Tolkien's work.

The Prancing Pony by Barliman Butterbur is recommended to the hobbits by almost everybody. Gandalf later blesses it and the inn has seven years of exceptionally good beer.

Answer: Daggers

Daggers out of Westernesse, wrought by the lords of Númenor, were taken by the hobbits when they were freed from the spell of the Barrow-wight. One of these daggers is used to hamstring the Chief Ringwraith later on in the story by Merry.

Bill the pony remains faithful to the party, even up to the mines of Moria. When the hobbits return from their quest, they find that Bill has returned to Bree and has waited for them.

Answer: Gandalf

Frodo wakes from his coma to find Gandalf sitting by his bed. He was wounded by the Morgul-blade, but the healing power of Elrond saved him. Frodo will always have a weakness brought about by the stab-wound, and not even Arwen's stone can entirely take away the pain.

Answer: Anduril

Andúril means 'flame of the west'. Aragorn reforges Narsil in Rivendell and uses it well throughout the War of the Rings, killing many orcs and other creatures. With the sword, Aragorn is able to reinforce his claim that he's the true king of Arnor and Gondor.

Answer: Caradhras

The Nine Walkers are making for the Redhorn Gate on the top of Carhadras to reach the Dimrill Stair to the other side. Aragorn wisely tries to avoid going through the Mines of Moria, but they are forced back by the mountain. They then have to take this path regardless.

Answer: Miruvor

Miruvor was given to Gandalf by Elrond for use in dire need. It warmed the spirit as well as the body. It ran out some time during Moria, but served its purpose well.

Answer: Mithril

Gimli states that it is not for gold or for iron that the dwarves have returned. Their 'quicksilver' is the most precious metal known. The dwarves could make with it whatever they wanted, yet it was lighter and stronger than iron.

Answer: Balrog

Durin's bane drags Gandalf into the great chasm, and his death, but not to his doom, Gandalf still has much to accomplish in the Third Age before departing into the West. Gandalf is later reincarnated as a white wizard, and becomes the strongest of the Istari.

He sees Gandalf under the mountains, Bilbo at his desk, and the dark lord on his throne. The mirror shows visions of the past, the present and the future, but not all seen may yet pass.

The phial is filled with water from Galadriel's mirror, and light from the star Eärendil. This is crucial later on in his quest, a light to show the path.

Gandalf is dragged into the abyss by the Balrog and is thought to be dead. He is, but he'll return... After him, Merry and Pippin are captured by orcs, then Boromir is killed defending them, and in the turmoil, Frodo and Sam slip away to continue the quest on their own.
