quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What did the Hobbits call the time between childhood and the coming of age?

Answer: Tweens

Merry and Pippin were two hobbits in their tweens. 33 was considered adulthood for hobbits, or what they called the "coming of age." Frodo turned 33, when Bilbo turned 111. There were 144 guests at Bilbo's party, which represented the combined age of Frodo and Bilbo.
2. Who tended the gardens of Bag End for 40 years?

Answer: Gaffer Gamgee

Hamfast Gamgee, or Gaffer Gamgee, was the father of Sam Gamgee. The Gamgees were always a poorer family. They often did servant work for other families, like the Bagginses. Despite being of a lower class than Bilbo, the Gaffer was always treated well by Bilbo. The Gaffer's son became the gardener for Frodo Baggins.
3. What three things did the stranger from Michel Delving believe Bilbo had in his chests at Bag End?

Answer: gold, jools, silver

Michel-Delving is the largest town in the Shire. It's where the Mayor lives and is also where the Lockholes are located. The Mayor is elected to a 7-year term. Will Whitfoot is the current (as of this chapter) Mayor of the Shire. After the War of the Ring Sam was elected as Mayor of the Shire 7 times. After his 49 years as Mayor, he left for Valinor to see Frodo again.
4. Whom did Bilbo announce as his heir?

Answer: Frodo

Otho Sackville-Baggins was Bilbo's heir until Bilbo adopted Frodo. The Sackville-Bagginses had wanted Bag End for a long time. After learning Frodo was the new heir to Bag End, the Sackville-Bagginses always despised Frodo.
5. Who was Bilbo's original heir, before he adopted his final heir?

Answer: Otho

The Sackville-Bagginses would eventually get their wish of owning Bag End. When Frodo decided to leave for his new home, Crickhollow, he sold Bag End to the Sackville-Bagginses. Sadly, Otho would never get to live in Bag End; he died at the age of 101. Lobelia moved in with her son, Lotho, and when Saruman came to town Lobelia was thrown into the Lockholes.
6. The Gaffer told Ted Sandyman he knew nothing about some activity. What was it?

Answer: boating

The Gamgees were never fond of the Sandymans. Sam and Ted would continually get into arguments about Dragons and walking trees. Ted's family owned the mill. Frodo's parents, Drogo and Primula, died in a boating accident.
7. What is the word Hobbits use for people or things they don't understand?

Answer: queer

Anyone, or Anything, the Hobbits didn't understand they thought of as "queer." You will find this word used a lot, as Hobbits from Hobbiton believed the Hobbits from Buckland were "queer"; the Hobbits from Buckland thought the Hobbits from Hobbiton were "queer."

Anything the Hobbits never used but didn't want to "throw away" was called a "mathom." Most hobbits used "mathoms" as presents, to give out during birthday parties.
8. What color was Gandalf's scarf?

Answer: Silver

Tolkien wrote, Gandalf was the only wizard to stay true to the task. All the wizards were given this task. The Istari were sent to Middle-earth to combat Sauron and unite the free peoples of Middle-earth. Saruman did many great things, but soon he lusted for power, and turned evil. Alatar and Pallando went into the East to stir up cults. Radagast did help out Gandalf, but he abandoned the "task," to tend beasts and plants. Gandalf was the only one to stay true to the task.

The info about Gandalf can be found in the Istari section of the "Unfinished Tales." As well as the info on Saruman, and the other Istari.
9. What event at every party did Hobbits dread the most?

Answer: the speech

Hobbits didn't like "the speech" given at every party. They especially didn't like Bilbo's speeches. They figured he would tell a long tale of his past journeys. Surprisingly, Bilbo's speech did very well, until the point, "I don't like half of you half as well as I should like...etc." The reason was because it gave the Hobbits too much to think about.
10. What were Bilbo's final words in his speech?

Answer: good-bye

Merry had said one day he spotted Bilbo walking up the street in front of him. The Sackville-Bagginses were coming from the other direction. Bilbo then disappeared right before Merry's eyes. This was when Merry, and the other conspirators, started watching Bilbo closely. They started spying on Bilbo, and Frodo, and eventually found out about The Ring.
11. What did Lobelia Sackville-Baggins receive from Bilbo?

Answer: spoons

Most of Bilbo's presents that he gave away had a note attatched to them with a little joke on it. Lobelia had been known for stealing spoons from Bilbo. As a joke, Bilbo gave Lobelia spoons. Other jokes of Bilbo's included giving Hugo Bracegirdle a book case, since he was known for borrowing books and not returning them, and giving Milo Burrows a pen and ink bottle, because he never returned letters.
12. Lobelia shouted to Frodo "You are no Baggins, you are a _______."

Answer: Brandybuck

Frodo had thrown Lobelia out of Bag End, which caused her to shout this out, at Frodo. The Hobbits from Hobbiton didn't think too well of the Brandybucks, who lived up in Buckland. Bucklanders were known for their extreme fondness of boating, something Hobbits from Hobbiton didn't understand.
13. Name the four people (that we are aware of, in this chapter) who knew how Bilbo really received the one ring?

Answer: Bilbo, Frodo, Gandalf, and Gollum

Bilbo and Gollum, obviously, knew the true story of how Bilbo acquired The Ring. Gandalf tells Frodo, that he learned the true story, from Bilbo, after a lot of prodding and demanding. Frodo, towards the end of the chapter, says Bilbo had told him the true story. Frodo said, Bilbo told him, "there shouldn't be any secrets between us."
14. She was Drogo's sister and Bilbo gave her a wastebasket.

Answer: Dora Baggins

Dora Baggins was the eldest surviving female relative of Bilbo and Frodo. Dora was 99 years old. For more than a half a century she had written good advice. This was one of the few presents Bilbo gave away that was actually sincere.
15. At the party, Gandalf set off a firework that looked like a dragon. What color was the Dragon?

Answer: golden-red

Gandalf's fame in the Shire was mainly due to his skill with fireworks. The Hobbits knew nothing about Gandalf's other, more "dangerous" business. Hobbits were quite fond of fireworks and rarely got to see them. This would be the first time in almost a century, that Hobbits would see one of Gandalf's fireworks displays. None of the youngest hobbits, nor their eldest relative, had ever seen a fireworks display until Bilbo's party.
