Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Chapter I, "A Long Expected Party", what did Bilbo take with him, wrapped in a bundle of tattered cloth?

Answer: His mithril shirt

Bilbo took his mithril shirt with him, hidden under a bundle of seemingly worthless cloth. As Gandalf later says, "That shirt is worth more than the Shire."
2. In Chapter II, "The Shadow of the Past", how long does the book say Gandalf went away for?

Answer: Nine Years

Gandalf dropped in to see Frodo regularly, but then stopped all together for nine entire years before this chapter takes place.
3. In Chapter III, "Three's Company", what does Frodo say to Gildor when they meet?

Answer: A star shines upon the hour of our meeting.

Frodo said, "Elen sila lumenn' omentielvo", which is translated, "A star shines upon the hour of our meeting". This was a traditional Elvish greeting.
4. In Chapter IV, "A Shortcut To Mushrooms", the hobbits cross a certain river. What is the name of the river, and which way does Pippin say they should turn after crossing it?

Answer: Stockbrook, right

The Stockbrook ran through Woody End, and Pippin was alarmed that they had gone so far off course.
5. Also in Chapter IV, the hobbits meet Farmer Maggot. He has three dogs. What are their names?

Answer: Wolf, Fang, and Grip

Frodo was deathly afriad of Wolf, Fang, and Grip. This was because of an unfortunate run-in with the dogs he experienced as a child in Buckland.
6. In Chapter IV, how many sit down to eat at the table?

Answer: 14

All of Maggot's children, his wife, and the three hobbits share a wonderful meal together.
7. What unusal word did Merry exclaim when he saw the mess on Frodo's new bathroom floor in Chapter V?

Answer: Lawks!

Merry was a bit surprised that there was water all over the floor, thanks to Pippin. "Lawks!" apparently, was the first thing that came to mind, though I personally would have said "Crikey". :D
8. In Chapter VI, "The Old Forest", what did Tom Bombadil order Old Man Willow to do?

Answer: dig deep, eat earth, drink water, go to sleep

Tom Bombadil had an incredible power over the forest. He called himself "The Master" and truly, he was.
9. In Chapter VII, "In The House Of Tom Bombadil", what does Tom call the hobbits, and how does he compare himself?

Answer: you are young, and I am old

Tom Bombadil calls himself 'Eldest' and that is the only explanation of who he is, or at least all that Frodo perceived. Some believe that Tom was a Maia, a sort of demi-god.
10. Also in Chapter VII, "In The House Of Tom Bombadil", what did Tom tell the hobbits not to heed?

Answer: Nightly Noises

Tom Bombadil assured the hobbits that they were safe in his home, saying, "Heed no nightly noises!" as they were going to sleep.
11. In Chapter IX, "Strider", what does Strider say about his sword?

Answer: Not much use, is it Sam?

Strider's real name is Aragorn, and he is the rightful King of Gondor. The sword he carries is the sword Narsil, the very sword that was broken, and then cut the Ring from Sauron's hand. It will soon be reforged, however, and become Anduril.
12. In Chapter X, "A Knife In The Dark", what does Strider say healed Beren's weary feet?

Answer: Enchantment

Beren was fated to meet Tinuviel (an elf) in the woods of Doriath, so somehow his weariness was magically healed.
13. In Chapter XI, "Many Meetings", why does Gandalf reprimand Pippin?

Answer: Pippin calls Frodo "The Lord of the Ring"

Pippin calls Frodo "The Lord of the Ring". Gandalf responds, "Hush! Evil things do not come into this valley, but all the same we should not name them. Frodo is not the Lord of the Ring."
14. In Chapter XII, "The Council Of Elrond", what did Gloin call Moria?

Answer: Wonder of the Northern World

Gloin, reminiscing to Frodo about Moria, said, "Moria! Moria! Wonder of the Northern world." Gloin remembers Moria as a Dwarvish paradise, but it has since fallen into darkness.
15. In Chapter XIII, "The Ring Goes South", Frodo said, "A real ____ is welcome!"

Answer: sunrise

Frodo said, "A real sunrise is welcome!" And Tolkien describes him flinging back his hood to let the light onto his face. In the light, the members of the Fellowship see they have gone far.
16. In Chapter XIV, "A Journey In The Dark", Aragorn said of Gandalf, "He is surer of finding the way home than the _______."

Answer: cats of Queen Beruthiel

Queen Beruthiel was always identified with her many cats. Not much else is known about her. It is suggested by the quote that her cats were very clever.

Answer: Gimli

Gandalf instructed Gimli to "lead the way" across the bridge, which could only be crossed in single file.

22. In Chapter XX, "The Breaking of the Fellowship", how many times did Frodo use the Ring?

23. Also in Chapter XX, what did Boromir do that Gandalf said saved him?

Answer: He slaughtered many orcs in defense of the hobbits.

Gandalf says later on that, "It was not in vain that the young hobbits came with us, if only for Boromir's sake."
24. Sam ran up Amon Hen, looking for Frodo.

Answer: False

Sam guessed Frodo's true intentions, and caught him before he could slip away from the rest of the Fellowship.
25. Gandalf did not play any part in the last chapter of "The Fellowship of the Ring".

Answer: False

Although we do not understand this when we first read it, Gandalf later says, "Very nearly it was revealed to the Enemy, but it escaped. I had some part in that: for I sat in a high place, and I strove with the Dark Tower; and the Shadow passed."
