Rumer Godden's "Butterfly Lions" was first published in 1977, and is all about the Pekingese dog and its significance at the Chinese Imperial Court over the years. "Butterfly Lion" (1996) by Michael Morpurgo is about a young boy who makes a pet of an albino lion cub, only to see it sold to a circus when he is sent away to school.
