Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What did Maeve witness after her father died?

Answer: A wedding

Coker saved Maeve's life in more ways than one. He not only protected her from the other pioneers, he also fed her his blood. This replenished her energy to a great degree. Coker left her to stay with the humans, but she refused and followed him through the snow.

There, she witnessed many different creatures gather around a large tent. Inside the tent a wedding was taking place. Two creatures seemed to be holding hands. When Maeve looked up she saw a smaller monster and realized it was a baby creature.
2. What attracted Owen Buddenbaum to the O'Connells?

Answer: Maeve's name

It was Owen Buddenbaum who approached father and daughter. It was hearing Maeve's name that drew his interest. He gave them the trinket that resembled a cross, which Tesla studied in the first novel. It represented the Cosm and Meta-Cosm, and Harmon and Maeve kept it with them. It was buried at the crossroads of Everville, where it spent decades gathering power.
3. What was Grillo diagnosed with?

Answer: Multiple Sclerosis

Five years had passed since Grillo had been involved with Palomo Grove. In that time, his body began to deteriorate. After different tests, he discovered he had Multiple Sclerosis. Grillo didn't want Tesla to see him weakened, and refused to see her. He sought comfort many times searching his Reef for clues about the mysteries of the secret life he knew existed.
4. What did Tesla do to Raul to upset him?

Answer: She called him "monkey"

After five years, Tesla and Raul had gotten more used to sharing a body. She went through spells after the events in Palomo Grove where she thought she was talking to a dog, who offered her advice. Raul often felt depressed about not having a body; Tesla had her own sad times and they would comfort each other.

But Tesla knew how to get under Raul's skin, so to say, by calling him "monkey." Raul used to be an ape, but Fletcher used the Nuncio and changed him.
5. Phoebe deliberately killed Morton.

Answer: False

Phoebe and Joe were in love, but Morton tried to stop their love. He viciously attacked them and was close to killing Joe. Instead of running away and saving herself, Phoebe stayed behind and used the only weapons she could find: a dinner knife and a fork.

She stabbed Morton in the chest with the fork just to stop his attacks. Later, Morton tripped or fell - Phoebe wasn't sure which - and the fork went deeper into him. Phoebe never wanted Morton to die; she just wanted him to stop trying to kill the love of her life.
6. Why did Joe help Noah reach Quiddity?

Answer: For power

Avoiding the police, Joe took a first-aid kit with him up a mountain called Harmon's Heights. After he climbed most of the mountain, he found a glowing entryway. He had to crawl over a body to reach it - but was shocked when the body moved and grabbed his leg.

It was Noah, and he promised Joe power in exchange for helping him enter Quiddity. They quarreled often during their trip but Joe had to admit he sought power.
7. Why was Tesla so afraid of going into the Toothaker house?

Answer: She smelled something foul

The man who'd identified himself as Fletcher was actually Kissoon. When Tesla originally went to Edwin Toothaker's house, she smelled something foul, like a sewer. It reminded her of the Lix, and she was frightened. It didn't help that upon her return, Kissoon finally revealed himself to her and her fears were confirmed ... there were indeed the foul-smelling Lix in the house.
8. Who saved Tesla from the Lix?

Answer: Spirits

Kissoon had spent his day creating his dangerous snake-like Lix, made from his own feces and magic. Their teeth were scarlet red and they yearned to eat Tesla from the inside. They crawled through her ears and her mouth. However, four spirits were in the house with her.

Their leader touched one of the Lix and the small contact led to the creature completely dissolving. He understood what had happened and quickly killed the rest of the Lix on and in Tesla.
9. Grillo kept tabs on Howie and Jo-Beth. What had changed for them since the end of "The Great and Secret Show"?

Answer: They'd had a daughter

After the events of the first book, Howie and Jo-Beth were advised by D-Amour to leave the area because he felt they were still in danger. So the couple moved and started their own life, marrying one another and having a child. Their daughter Amy was a young infant at the start of the novel.

But the couple was growing apart with Jo-Beth being unable to forget about her twin, Tommy-Ray, and Howie sensing that very fact. His stutter returned and Tommy-Ray claimed that Amy was his.
10. Why didn't Joe eat the squid-like fish pulled from the dream-sea?

Answer: It was sacred

When Joe and Noah set forth to return to Noah's home, Joe admitted he enjoyed being on the ship. Perhaps more than, that, however, was the connection he felt with the alien-like Zehraphushu ('shu) he encountered in the water. He was eating any fish he caught, but stopped when he spotted a squid-like 'shu. Noah explained it was rumored each creature was connected with the others.

When Joe held the 'shu, it kept staring up at him.
