Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why were all boats in the Abarat painted red?

Answer: For protection

Candy learned about the Great Green Mantizac of the Sea of Izabella and the danger it posed to swimmers and sailors in the Abarat. John Mischief explained to her that the creatures of the sea left the color red alone. And that was why all of the ferries, boats, and ships of the Abarat were painted red.
2. How many heads did John Mischief possess?

Answer: Eight

John Mischief was the first person Candy met in Abarat. He was very courteous to her. Besides his usual face, he had seven extra heads that perched on two stalks. Each head, also named John, had its own personality and name. Besides John Mischief, there was Fillow, Serpent, Sallow, Moot, Drowze, Slop, and Pluckitt.
3. How much money did Candy give to Izarith?

Answer: Eleven dollars

A kind Abarat native offered her home to Candy, to help warm her up. Her name was Izarith and she had two small children in her tiny home. Izarith even gave Candy a dress to wear because her clothes were all wet. Candy pulled out her mostly dry bills and gave her a ten and a one dollar bill. Izarith was overjoyed because unlike a regular zem, the regular Abarat money, dollars were quite valuable.

She cried, "Angels use dollars."
4. What type of creature abducted Candy from the printing press?

Answer: A moth

Christopher Carrion used the remains of several bodies to create a vessel in which to bring Candy to him. He used a dark magic and sent his underling Mendelson Shape to fetch her. Candy looked up in horror when she saw her tormentor riding a massive moth.

It grabbed her with its large legs and took her away from the top of the tower of the printing press. Carrion's spell also allowed him to see with the eyes of his moth creation.
5. What was Kaspar Wolfswinkel wearing when he met Candy?

Answer: Several hats with a yellow suit

Kaspar Wolfswinkel greeted Candy warmly at first. He shook her hand and also carried a large staff. Candy began to call Wolfswinkel "Ol' Banana Suit" behind his back due to the colorful yellow suit he insisted on wearing. He also wore several hats upon his head, which Candy learned were the source of his magical powers.
6. Which of the following was not an animal in the story?

Answer: Keeries

Tarrie cats were helpful fire-red cats that guarded over the evil Kaspar Wolfswinkel. Wolfswinkel conjured an eeriac to torment his slave; the eeriac was maggot-like and had two mouths filled with sharp teeth. Qwats were evil little night birds that lived on Vesper's Rock, and they were quite noisy. Also when Candy was with Samuel Klepp the Fifth, they used squid-like creatures to see far away.

There were many types of creatures in the Abarat, including Kiefalent whales.
7. Where did the crew of the "Belbelo" land?

Answer: 3 o'clock in the Afternoon

The world of Abarat was divided not into states, but into time. John Mischief joined the "Belbelo" to earn a job digging so he could earn passage. When the ship was attacked by a dragon, it was destroyed and the crew found themselves at 3 o'clock in the Afternoon, also known as The Island of the Nonce.
8. There was a terrible storm. What happened after the monsoon arrived?

Answer: Plant life prospered at an alarming rate

The rain came suddenly and Geneva, Tom, Tria, and the Captain quickly tried to gather what gear they had savaged from the wreck. Tom offered to carry John Mischief, who was still on death's door. They stood in inches of water before the monsoon let up. Trees were battered and leaves were scattered everywhere. To everyone's shock, the plant life immediately began to restore itself-trees grew their leaves back, ferns and roots flew up at a miraculous speed.
9. What would be the best description of the Fugit Brothers?

Answer: Killer clowns

The Fugit Brothers kept a watch on the most mysterious area of the Abarat: the Twenty-Fifth Hour. Candy learned that whoever had ventured into that particular hour either never returned or, when they did, were completely crazy. She learned why when she met the Fugit Brothers, Tempus and Julius.

Their faces were white and droopy like clowns. And their features refused to stay put on their faces, constantly moving around. The brothers argued over whether to kill Candy first or to drive her crazy.

They were led by Abraham Hollow, Keeper of the Time Out of Time.
10. How was each of the three women in the Twenty-Fifth hour described?

Answer: Lightning, sky, wilderness

Candy met the three women introduced in the Prologue of the story: Diamanda, Joephi, and Mespa. They comforted her greatly and even saved her life from the dangerous Fugit Brothers. Diamanda was the elder of the three and had a dark energy to her despite her aged face and pure white hair; she was lightning. Mespa was sky and had long hair that she kept parted and was filled with bright color. Joephi was of course wilderness with the feral look in her eyes; her black hair was very short.

They magically provided a boat for Malingo and Candy to escape in as well as a powerful gust of wind to take them away.
