Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which animal attacked Will and caused him to go into a coma?

Answer: A polar bear

Will Rabjohns and his crew were working in Balthazar. Will, a famous photographer, was taking pictures of polar bears living near a trash-ridden junk yard. One night, Will's friend Cornelius was outside late at night making too much noise in a drug-induced stupor.

A large polar bear arrived and was only driven back when Adrianna shot her twice. Will, wanting to see her die, followed the bear into the woods. It was in the woods that Will was attacked by the polar bear, which was still alive.
2. Who saved Will's life during the attack?

Answer: Adrianna

Will had incidentally followed the polar bear to Guthrie's old house. Lucy, Guthrie's loyal German Sheppard, was barking incessantly. The old man left his house to investigate and saw a standoff between Will and the bear. The bear attacked Guthrie first, and then Will. Adrianna had followed after Will and arrived just in time to save only Will.

She shot at the polar bear again and saved his life.
3. What did Jacob Steep call himself?

Answer: The Killer of Last Things

At first, Will didn't know much about his idol Jacob Steep. Guthrie explained that he liked to call himself The Killer of Last Things. Steep enjoyed bringing extinction to all living things. He even kept a journal, with well-drawn pictures, of all of the animals he had made extinct.
4. While Will was in a coma, what did Adrianna tell him?

Answer: She admitted that she loved him

Adrianna and Will had worked together for many years. She never had a serious relationship, and Will was a homosexual. However, as Will slept peacefully, Adrianna admitted that she was in love with him. She explained that so far it was okay, because they got to work with one another. She also said that if he heard her, she would deny every word she had spoken.
5. What tragic event happened when Will was younger?

Answer: His brother was killed

Will's brother, Nathaniel, was only 15 when he was hit by a taxi. His body was sent flying through a store window. He died three nights later. Will's mother never recovered and his father made them move from their home to get a fresh start. Nathaniel had always been thought of as the good son, and Will always resented him for that.
6. Where did Rosa and Jacob live when Will was younger?

Answer: The Courthouse

The Courthouse was created by a man named Bartholomeus. He believed that animals were not being treated fairly, so he built a courthouse just for animals and made himself the judge. He did not finish his work, and Will's friend Frannie claimed he was probably placed in a mental ward. Will found out that that was where Jacob and Rosa lived. They wanted to hide from the public eye.
7. Which animals did Jacob tell Will to kill?

Answer: Two birds

While in a coma, Will slept and relived parts of his childhood. He remembered when he met the two strange people named Jacob Steep and Rosa McGee. Jacob led Will up a mountain and pointed out two birds. Using Jacob's bloodthirsty knife, Will killed the birds and contemplated the fact that the two creatures might have been the last of their breed.
8. What happened after Will killed the animals?

Answer: Jacob and Will experienced a psychic moment

The two experienced an odd shift in the area around them. Jacob called Will a conduit and demanded that he stop, repeatedly saying "I don't want this." When Will reached and touched his fingers, the two were psychically sent to a memory of Jacob's. They saw Jacob's old friend Thomas. It was July 1730 and the memory showed a fox eating the remains of Thomas, who had killed himself.
9. Why did Rosa get insanely mad at Jacob during Will's recollection of his childhood memories?

Answer: He had tried to murder her

Rosa and Jacob had lived together for centuries. Throughout the years they had many children, who were killed at birth by Jacob. Rosa was depressed when Jacob told her he didn't want to have children anymore. However, she grew furious when he approached her with a knife, having decided to kill her.

She used her "rosaries," or her magic ropes, to prevent the murder. As punishment, Rosa made Jacob cut off one of his testicles.
10. Who stole one of Jacob's journals?

Answer: Sherwood

Frannie and her brother Sherwood followed Will into the Courthouse, hoping to protect him from Jacob and Rosa. Rosa, however, lured Sherwood and used her uncanny abilities to subdue him. Frannie screamed for her brother, who woke from his trance and accidentally knocked a candle over. Papers caught fire, but Sherwood noticed Steep's book and stole it. Frannie took it from him and obsessed over the intricate drawings and language she could not read.
11. What form did the creature that "mentored" Will appear as?

Answer: A fox

Will first saw the fox in Jacob's old memory of Thomas. The fox was called Lord Fox by Will after that. When he was dying after the bear attack, he heard the fox saying it wasn't time for him to die. The fox appeared several times throughout the book. Also, Rukenau mentioned he could sense the spirit of the fox inside of Will.
12. Which of Will's senses was elevated after a talk with his mentor?

Answer: His sight

Lord Fox demanded that Will take him seriously and accept that he was seeing him in reality, and not in a dream. After collapsing in an ice-cold shower, Will woke up feeling strong and clear-headed. He took a cab ride, but left it because he was so entranced by how well-defined and beautiful everything looked. Will was astounded because he was a famous photographer and had been around the world and had seen many beautiful things- while never knowing all of the beauty that was ten minutes away from his own home. Later on his sense of smell was heightened as well.
13. Will's friend Patrick used a spiritual guide named Bethlynn. What did she think Will was?

Answer: An unwitting shaman

Bethlynn was hired to console Patrick, who was slowly dying. She was trying to get him to show his good side, the side that would always be happy and healthy. Before even meeting Will, Bethlynn judged him as a pessimistic man with a negative influence on Patrick.

But when she saw Will, she saw him as an unwitting shaman, admitting that "whatever moved in him" frightened her. Separately, Jacob told Rosa that he thought Will was a psychic.
14. Frannie gave Will a book to help him try to figure out who exactly Jacob was. What was the book called?

Answer: A Mystic Tragedy

The full title was "A Mystic Tragedy: The Life and Work of Thomas Simeon." It was written by Kathleen Dwyer, a woman who felt Simeon was an amazing, underrated artist. Immediately Will knew the book was important because of the vision he and Jacob had shared.

It also contained some of the unknown language found in one of Jacob's journals. However, the most important image in the book was a black-and-white painting of Simeon's depicting the Nilotic bending over the Earth.
15. Who recruited Thomas Simeon to draw for him?

Answer: Gerard Rukenau

At the beginning, Will didn't know anything about Gerard Rukenau. He had only heard the name once in the vision of Thomas Simeon in the year 1730. In the book "A Mystic Tragedy," the author used letters from Simeon's friend, John Galloway, to help explain more about Simeon.

He described how Rukenau recruited him and wanted him to draw certain things. Will also learned that Rosa and Jacob studied under him.
16. Who beat Will's father to within an inch of his life?

Answer: Jacob

Hugo Rabjohns, Will's father, was walking home from a bar when he ran into Jacob and Rosa. Jacob was obsessed with finding, and ultimately killing, Will. He demanded that Hugo tell him where his son was. When Hugo admitted that they rarely spoke, Jacob took his cane away and beat him with it. He knew the attack would bring Will back to his hometown.
17. Who was ultimately responsible for Hugo's death?

Answer: Rosa

After Hugo was brutally beaten, he was taken to a hospital. Will came to visit, but the two just fought and Hugo told his son he never wanted to see him again. After he left, Jacob and Rosa paid Hugo a visit. The two stood around his bed and Jacob told him that his son would see him one last time- to "pay his respects." Rosa told Hugo to be calm as she laid her hand on his chest. Immediately he heard his heart pounding in his ears and he died shortly after.
18. How was Rosa mortally wounded?

Answer: Jacob stabbed her

Will ran into Rosa and Jacob outside of the hospital. He said the only thing he could think of to save himself- he mentioned Rukenau. Rosa was immediately transfixed on the idea of seeing him again and her actions made Jacob furious. He pulled his special knife out and stabbed her, claiming it wasn't his doing. Rosa pulled the knife, which was so deep in her only the hilt showed, out and cried "Oh, Jacob, what have you done?" She fought to stay alive until she got to see Rukenau again.
19. How did Rukenau die?

Answer: Jacob stabbed him

Rukenau told Will his story: he sought to make the world's most beautiful place of worship, which he called the Domus Mundi, or the House of the World. He decided to play God. He took a creature, which he dubbed the Nilotic, and divided it into two: the two halves became the entities known as Rosa McGee and Jacob Steep.

When Will brought everyone together at the Domus Mundi, Jacob took out his powerful knife and killed Rukenau, who ultimately felt he deserved it. Before that, however, he explained to Rosa that she and Jacob were two halves of the same soul. Frannie helped Will escape the hypnotizing House of the World as Rosa and Jacob met together and became a whole soul.
20. Oddly enough, the word "sacrament" was never said in the story.

Answer: False

It was said just once, actually. When Will and Jacob had their psychic moment on the mountain and saw Jacob's past, the word was spoken. Thomas Simeon spoke of his sometime-master: "Poor Rukenau. He's been reciting his liturgies for so long, he's more in love with them than with the true sacrament." Rukenau lost sight of what was important and was stuck in the Domus Mundi as punishment.
