Sadly, many people died in the first half of the book. In Harry D'Amour's chapter, his friend Ted was killed when he was trying to help him at a party. Tesla found Lucien and his friends dead on top of the mountain and it shook her to her core. Edwin was killed by Kissoon, and his body helped feed the evildoer's Lix. Joe was still in Quiddity at the end of the first half of the book.

He almost died but he finally reached the shores.

Answer: What it said to him

On one of his many adventures, Harry had lost a good friend named Father Hess. The demon, who went by many names, was responsible. It called itself Lazy Susan many times but always said the same thing, over and over again: "I am you and you are love and that's what makes the world go round." Harry was haunted by that repeated phrase in the story.

Answer: Raul

D'Amour wanted to see the Iad for the first time, so he once more climbed Harmon's Heights. There, he was captured by Kissoon and Zury's followers. Their plan was to crucify him, as they had Lucien and his friends. But a creature emerged from the portal and killed the follower who was trying to kill D'Amour.

It was Raul, who had been separated from Tesla. He'd found a body to inhabit and had returned to Everville just in time to save Harry.

Answer: She dreamt of Quiddity

A person visits Quiddity three times in their lives: when they're born, the first night they sleep next to the person they love, and the day before they die. Tesla dreamt of Quiddity and knew that meant she would die that day. She kept quiet about it and didn't say her goodbyes. Tesla did eventually die.

Answer: Protecting Amy

Grillo pulled Jo-Beth and her baby Amy into his car to get them away from Tommy-Ray and his ghost followers. However, the dust the ghosts made followed and flipped his car over. Grillo realized he was dying but didn't feel much pain. He ensured the baby Amy was safe and she wrapped her little hand around his index finger.

He willed air into his lungs and whispered to her, "I'm here," and then passed away.

Answer: It was being held

Joe traveled through 'Kabbat seeing its inhabitants fleeing at the advancing Iad Uroboros, which hovered over the city. Noah had him enter a sacred temple to ensure his own safety. Once there, Joe realized there was a massive 'shu with a large eye staring above it.

Instantly, Joe knew it was holding the Iad in place. Noah stabbed the 'shu in the eye, thus ending its hold on the evil Uroboros.

Answer: King Texas

Once it was able to, the Iad advanced upon Quiddity's shores and through the portal. However, only part of it got through. King Texas threw up a wall of stones to prevent it from entering completely into Everville. D'Amour saw this with delight and realized that the Iad, which he always felt was the Devil, could bleed.

Answer: They wanted to be entertained

Owen Buddenbaum had entertained the avatars for decades. In exchange, he received youth and great healing power. He was even shot in the head but survived. But the avatars grew tired of seeing him kill people. When they saw Tesla, they experienced totally new sights, such as watching Howie and Jo-Beth die.

They offered her the same healing abilities and a long life in exchange for Tesla continuing to add to her "story tree." They kept asking, "What's next? What's next?"

Answer: Watching Amy

When the Iad began to enter into his city, Seth was very busy. Buddenbaum had gone off to gain the Art, going nearly mad in the process, so he was alone when he saw Tesla returning to Phoebe's home. She had Jo-Beth and Howie's baby Amy with her, and he offered to help.

The baby calmed down when he held her. Seth also fed Amy. He tried to prevent Tommy-Ray from stealing her away, but the local men who wanted to gain "control" got drunk and beat him, thus allowing the Death-Boy to claim Amy for himself.

Answer: Tesla

Tesla knew she was going to die, so she didn't fight it when she eventually did. Owen Buddenbaum had tricked the avatars and managed to make two of them vanish. Despite the gravity of the situation, one of them continued to ask, "What next?" But Harry bought Kissoon over from Harmon's Heights so he could meet his mother, who he realized was Maeve. Kissoon killed her, and as a result her blood reached Tesla.

This set forth the Art, which claimed Tesla. At the end of the story, she was using the Art to search through Grillo's Reef, which was filled with stories.
