Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who met Pitt when he arrived back on the Capricorn?

Answer: Rudy Gunn

When Pitt's helicopter landed on the Capricorn, he noticed that Gunn had a solemn expression on his face. When asked, Gunn said that one of the submersibles was trapped on the wreck below with the men inside. It didn't look good.
2. Which submersible was trapped on the wreck?

Answer: Deep Fathom

The Deep Fathom, the Uranus Oil owned sub, was trapped. It had been installing the bleeder valves when its rear end hit a rusted out cargo crane on the ship. The crane fell against the hull and punched a small hole in one of her ballast tanks, pinning her down. All three subs tried to pull the Deep Fathom free, but the Sea Slug broke its manipulator arm and it would be hours before it was back in the water again.

There was also a small pinhole in the cabin as well and the cabin was now filling with water. Time was running out!
3. How was Pitt planning to raise the ship?

Answer: explosives

Pitt was going to use 80 charges with 30 lbs of explosives each. He also ordered as much air pumped into her upper compartments as possible, just enough to pop the blender valves. The charges would be placed in three rows on each side. One row on the port side would be detonated and then the starboard.

They want to go with shock waves and rock the ship like you would do a car that is stuck in the mud.
4. About how long did Rudy Gunn say it would take for this (raising the ship) to happen?

Answer: 4 hours

Sappho II was standing by the Deep Fathom to keep company. In order for this to happen in the four hours that Gunn said it would take, the Sappho II would have to help out. This meant pulling her off her station by the Deep Fathom. They had no other choice in the matter. Actually, with the timer ticking at four hours and 14 minutes, they had to hurry it up.
5. Did they make the deadline? (Raising the ship)

Answer: Yes

They barely made it! In fact, after all the charges were detonated, the Titanic stayed on the bottom. Feeling failure and despair, the crew went about going to work as scheduled. All of the sudden, the sonar man said the Titanic moved and was on her way up. With the overfill of air, the ship rocketed to the surface and shot like a whale out of the ocean.

After slamming back down to the water, the Titanic righted herself to a 12 degree list and stayed put. When Giordino and Bailey got to the sub, they found that the water flooded it about 18 inches from the ceiling.

The three men (Merker, Keel, and Chavez) were still alive!
6. What was Seagram planning on doing in the park?

Answer: commit suicide

Seagram was losing his mind. He had gotten a message from NUMA about the Deep Fathom being trapped on the wreck with the three men inside. He was feeling as though his Cecilian Project was now going down the drain, and was planning on going with it. That was until Officer Jones came up and talked him out of it. Jones stated to him that the government brought up some ship from the bottom. Seagram was happy to hear that it was the Titanic. If Jones showed up any later, Seagram would've never had the chance to see if the Cecilian Project actually worked or not.
7. Who did Marganin say was being a traitor to his country?

Answer: Andre Prevlov

Marganin met with Boris Sloyuk to say that Captain Prevlov was a traitor and that he should be arrested as such. He provided several forms of proof. There was one piece of evidence that was shown, a bank statement from a Swiss bank account. It had several large deposits in it from a VVOLPRE. Marganin said this was a clumsy anagram on the name of Prevlov. Sloyuk felt as though Marganin was merely trying to get Prevlov into trouble and was harsh with Marganin for feeling such thoughts.
8. Would Prevlov be arrested?

Answer: No

Prevlov would not be arrested. Sloyuk felt as though the evidence Marganin showed was "trumped up" and that the Byzanium would be on a Soviet ship within three days. It would prove Prevlov's innocence and Marganin's guilt.
9. Who were the first men on board the Titanic?

Answer: Pitt and Giordino

After helping to rescue the men from the Deep Fathom, Giordino stayed on board to help with the salvaging of the Titanic. Even though he was the only person on board the ship for a short time, he did not do much exploring because it made him feel uneasy. Pitt later came on board and walked to the bridge and took in the reverence.

He later walked aft and unwrapped the package that Bigelow had given him.
10. What was the package that Bigelow gave Pitt?

Answer: pennant

When Pit visited Bigelow, he was given a package. It was not known until now what it was. Pitt walked aft and went down to A Deck to the flag stand at the aft portion of the deck. There he used the twine from the package and hung the pennant back up where Bigeow had snagged it 76 years ago when the Titanic was going down.

It was the White Star emblem pennant that was now hanging back in its rightful place.
11. Where did Pitt set up his "operations room"?

Answer: gymnasium

Sandecker was surprised that Pitt didn't set up operations on the bridge. Pitt explained, though, that since the bridge would be worthless, they would set up in the gym instead. The gymnasium was located midships on the wreck and it was adjacent to the raised roof over the first-class lounge which they utilized as a helicopter pad. It was more efficient this way.
12. Were the lower compartments easily accessible?

Answer: No

They were not easily accessible. Jumbled bits of debris were clogging up the companionways and corridors of the ship from years of rot. At this point, the Titanic was still taking on water somewhere and the men could not get to it.
13. Who was Prevlov meeting with to discuss the capturing of the Byzanium?

Answer: Jorgey Antonov

Prevlov was meeting with Antonov and discussing his plans for seizing the Byzanium. Antonov was uncertain because he knew it would be dangerous. Prevlov was too confident and it seemd doomed to failure. Prevlov asked that he be transported to the Mikail Korkov as soon as possible. There was a hurricane coming and that fell in with his planning.
14. The vault could be accessed.

Answer: False

Pitt had made his way down to Cargo Hold 1; G Deck. However, he found that the vault was under a ton of debris that had crashed about in the cargo hold as the ship was going down. The vault itself was buried under the collapsed forward wall of the room.
15. Where did Pitt say was a way to get to the boiler rooms?

Answer: through the boiler casings where the funnels once were

The men thought they would lose the Titanic after she was sitting upright again. Through an unrelated suggestion by Woodson, Pitt could see now where they could be able to get all the way into the boiler room where the rest of the water still lay. He instructed Rick Spencer to get his crew and cut away the wet steel openings over the holes where the funnels once stood.

They would have a clear tunnel down and could get the equipment down to it.
