Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Someone just made a "jape"; how would you most likely respond?

Answer: laugh

You're expected to laugh when someone tells a joke or a funny remark, unless you're a poor sport (especially when the joke was on you). The word jape was first used in the 14th century which means "to say or do something jokingly or mockingly" (www.merriam-webster.com)
2. If you want to earn a living as a "mummer", what skill would you most likely start practicing?

Answer: acting

Mummer is the general term used to denote performers, usually part of a troupe and skilled in entertaining nobility. Other mummer skills may include juggling, dancing, and acrobatics, although some mummers become such by virtue of some physical oddity, like the dwarf Tyrion Lannister.
3. Most banquets in Westeros include a dish made of "capon". What is this delicious food made from?

Answer: Chicken

A capon is castrated rooster. The removal of its reproductive organ (and subsequently the sex hormones) causes the chicken to lack aggressiveness, increase its size, and develop better meat quality.
4. If someone told you a "wight" is approaching, what would you most likely do?

Answer: Run for your life

The person who told you was probably also running for his life as well. Wights are undead creatures - previously slain humans or animals brought back to life by sorcery or magic. In the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series, they are supernaturally strong murderous creatures who attack humans and are very difficult to kill (can only be "slain" by fire or dragonglass). Dead beings are turned into wights by "The Others" or by other wights.
5. What is a "dragonglass"?

Answer: a piece of volcanic rock

Dragonglass is the common term used in Westeros for obsidian, a type of volcanic rock that is dark and has a very smooth texture. Samwell Tarly accidentally discovered that dragonglass is very effective in "slaying" wights (which earned him the monicker "Sam the Slayer")
6. One of the languages created by the author for the series is the Braavosi language, and the most popular phrase repeated throughout the series is the phrase "valar morghulis". What does it mean?

Answer: "All men must die"

This was the phrase the Bravo Jaqen H'ghar taught Arya Stark to memorize after giving her a "special" copper coin. Arya used the coin to gain passage to Braavos, where she learned of the meaning of the phrase and the correct response to it, which is "valar dohaeris," which means "all men must serve".
7. What is a "sept"?

Answer: A place of worship

A sept is what churches are called in Westeros, specifically those that are built for worshipping the "Seven," aspects of the deity that most of the people in King's Landing and its nearby cities pray to. Septons (priests) and septas (somewhat like nuns) commonly inhabit septs.
8. What are "smallclothes"?

Answer: Undergarments worn by both male and female

This is an uncommon term for underwear used mostly during the 18th century. It was also used to refer to knee breeches worn by men, but the former definition was exclusively used in the "A Song of Ice and Fire" books.
9. Another invented language in the "A Song of Ice and Fire" book series is the barbaric Dothraki language. What is a Dothraki "arakh"?

Answer: A long curved blade

The arakh, the principal weapon of choice of almost all Dothraki warriors, is a combination sword and scythe, wherein the portion near the tip curves after the straight length from the hilt.
10. What is "cyvasse"?

Answer: A board game similar to chess

The cyvasse board game is similar to chess in that the two players take turns in moving various pieces of different capabilities and strengths. Tyrion Lannister has become quite adept at playing the game after his escape from King's Landing.
