Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the book's prologue, what natural disaster did eighteen year old Rain Tallman live through?

Answer: earthquake

It was December of 1811, just a few months since Rain had left Quill's Station in book one. He was off to discover which life he wanted to lead, one as a white man or one as an Indian. He awoke to a powerful shaking and ripping of the Earth's surface.

The quake was so powerful that it complete reordered the landscape around him. He spent two days trying to find his step-father, John Spotted Elk, but finally realized the man had to have been lost. So, he heads back to Quill's Station to check on his white family before heading west to become a man.
2. What was the name of the woman who Rain was escorting to Will Bradford?

Answer: Eleanor Woodbury

Rain enticed Farr and Libby into following him into his new valley somewhere in Arkansas. But, before they could all leave, Rain had to retrieve Eleanor in order to transport her to her fiance, Will Bradford. When he arrived back at Quill's station, Rain had Eleanor, Gavin McCourtney and two long hunters. He also had the news that Colby Carroll would not be able to come to buy out Farr for a few more months. So, Rain, Eleanor, Gavin and Amy would go on ahead and Farr would leave later to join them.

The incorrect choices are all characters from "The Vampire Diaries", which is both a book series and TV series.
3. What was the name of the village Eleanor wandered into where she was attacked?

Answer: Kaskaskia

Eleanor had spent days angry and humiliated after she swooned and had most of her undergarments removed by Amy. She'd worn practically her weight in petticoats, coupled with a crippling corset. Rain had tossed all of her petticoats in a tree to insure she wouldn't wear them again. After that, she'd given Rain and Amy the silent treatment. When they stopped near Kaskaskia, she sneaked into town and barely escaped. Gavin and Amy risked their lives to save her, but Rain had to come in at the end to ensure they all made it out of town alive. Sadly, this alerted Hammond Perry to his presence and a particular Frenchmen to Amy...

Kaskaskia was the first capital of Illinois in 1818, when it became the twenty-first state of the union.
4. Tally Perkins followed Amy from Quill's Station into the wilderness.

Answer: True

Tally was Amy's step-brother. Amy's loathesome father had married Tally's widowed mom, Maude. Over the years, Maude had try to form a relationship with Amy, but Amy couldnt respect any woman who'd have her father. Amy's father had tried to sell her off in marriage to a vile man named Stith Lenning in book one. Tally had been trying halfheartedly to get Amy to marry him in the two years following Juicy Deverell's death. Amy's father had also pushed and pushed her into the union, much to Amy's disgust. Tally was a homely, browbeaten young man, and Amy was in love with a powerful self-confident tracker. Tally's one act of courage and defiance was to leave Quill's Station without telling his mother and follow Amy. Rain knew they were being trailed by someone, but since Tally never posed a threat, Rain kept it to himself. Tally made himself know in time to warn Rain and Gavin that Hammond Perry's river men were on their way to kidnap Amy. Of course, it turned out that Hammond really wanted Eleanor.
5. About halfway through their journey to meet Will Bradford, the group met up with some homesteaders named Badker. What item did Rain leave with the family?

Answer: a wagon

The family was in much need of company when the foursome came along. They were longtime friends of Rain, who'd once spent a week with them while the husband was gravely ill. They were in dire straits at the time, and Rain had provided food and wood while the man recovered. Vonnie Badker was in need of some women company and they had a great visit.

When they left, Rain asked the Badkers to pass along an update to Liberty and Farr when they were to pass through in a few months time. And, he left a wagon they would not be able to drive through the mountains.

The Badkers had no wagon of their own, and supplied venison jerky and bread for Rain to take with him, as well as some oven baked passenger pigeons that had passed overhead the previous day. Eleanor left her mass of petticoats for Vonnie to use in whatever way she needed. Vonnie was reluctant to take stuff so expensive, but Eleanor assured her she would get more use out of them.
6. Did Eleanor confess her to love to Gavin before he confessed his own for her?

Answer: Yes

Gavin became smitten with Eleanor very quickly, though he saw through her conceited bravado right from the start. He'd even been compelled to give her a spanking at one point, after which he cuddle her gently. After the group left the Badker homestead, they were forced to ride astride into the mountains. Eleanor had never done this in her life, and while she enjoyed the freedom of it, the pain it caused was excruciating.

After that first day, she was in agony. Gavin had to take her into a hot spring to relax her muscles and then he massaged out as much of the cramping pain as he was able.

It was after that experience that Eleanor confessed the lies about her regal upbringing and told Gavin she loved him.
7. When the group faced off with Bull and his hired men, out on the trail, which member of the group was shot because of Tally's indecisiveness?

Answer: Gavin

They spotted Bull and the other hired killers on route to meet Will Bradford. Bull had purposely left his gang viewable as to impress upon Rain the importance of letting Eleanor be taken. Our good guys were obviously outnumbered by Bull's men. Rain decided to buy some time by admitting defeat and Bull fell for it. Rain feigned a lack of concern for Eleanor and she played right along with it.

Then, Rain spelled out a strategy that could work. They'd each have to kill one person, and he and Amy would take out two. Tally was appalled at the idea of murdering anyone, even in defense of their group. Rain tried to explain that once Eleanor was taken, the river rats would kill all of them. Tally was too simple, just too much a simple farmer to wrap his head around it.

His lack of focus caused Gavin a painful bullet wound. The shot went through a mule's neck, striking Gavin secondarily. If it had hit him dead on, he would have most likely died. Tally disappeared from their camp that night, and Rain later found him murdered out on the trail.
8. After Gavin and Rain left Davidsonville in search of a preacher, who did Antoine send to kill them?

Answer: Pete Hopcus

Antoine Efant was the same Frenchmen who'd encountered Rain in Kaskaskia during the attempt to rescue Eleanor. It was there he'd become obsessed with Amy Deverell and wanted her for his own. So, he'd commandeered the help of someone from Amy's past to capture her and Eleanor while Rain and Gavin were off to fetch the preacher. That man was Hull Dexter.

He'd been the one leading the wagon train from New York in book one. He'd left the group to be slaughtered by terrible men, and it was within that carnage that Farr had rescued Daniel Phelps.

While Hull was to be off taking Amy and Eleanor, Pete Hopcus was to trail after Rain and Gavin and kill them. Amy and Eleanor were taken while sitting creekside, relaxing before they started to wash their clothes and hair. Hull Dexter deeply resented the control Antoine had over him and truly wanted nothing to do with the man. Antoine warned Hull that he'd better never return to the region after capturing the women.

He was to hand over Amy and take Eleanor down river to Hammond Perry, who would sell her off as a prostitute. Pete never even fired a shot a Rain, who'd met up with Will Bradford unexpectedly.

When he realized he'd lost his chance, Pete got back on his horse and prayed he never encountered Antoine again.
9. Antoine Efant held Amy captive for a couple of days before Rain arrived to save her. Who was it that actually killed Antoine?

Answer: Rain

Rain threw a knife into his chest and then open fired on him. Amy quickly explained what had happened to Eleanor, but Rain assured her that Gavin and Will were already on their way to save her. He also explained to her that it was Jean Pierre Hoffman's young daughter, Tennessee, that had helped Rain find Amy's trial.

She'd followed Amy and Eleanor to the creek, and continued to follow their captors as long as she could. If not for her, Rain may never have found the right trail to Antoine.
10. Who officiated the weddings of Rain and Amy and Gavin and Eleanor?

Answer: Will Bradford

Major Will Bradford was happy to legally wed the two couples. It was a huge party in Davidsonville, with the entire town attending the ceremony. Much food was contributed by the town and Will himself, and afterward Eleanor tried to apologize for her knowledge in the scam her aunt had cooked up. Will assured Eleanor that he knew all about the type of people she'd been raised by, but that he had admired her mother. Dorothy Garlock inserted these events in the life of the major, who was a real person. She wrote that she believed he could have acted in the way she portrayed him, and hoped his ancestors would forgive her.

Though it was never revealed in this book, I believe Antoine Efant was the same Frenchmen who'd killed Farr's first wife Fawnella.
