Morgoth was loath to cross the Ered Luin, because of the strength and splendor of Gil-Galad and his elves. But after the War of Wrath, parts of Lindon sunk under the water. Lindon means in Quenya "land of the singers" and was all that remained of the peninsula of Ossiriand after the War of Wrath when most of the land of the seven rivers sunk into the sea.
