Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the woods between the Last Bridge and Rivendell?

Answer: Trollshaws

Can you think of the reason why those woods are called the TROLLshaws? Yep, those woods are inhabited by trolls, and the same trolls that caught Bilbo and the dwarves in "The Hobbit".
2. The haven of Lindon is on the inside of what large gulf?

Answer: Lhun

Lindon was formed after the second age as a refuge for elves that wished to reach the Blessed Realm in the west. Cirdan the shipwright was the lord there, and he was the last in the bloodline of the Alqualonde in Valinor. Rhun is a sea in the far east, just north of Mordor. Belfalas is a gigantic bay that the Great Anduin empties out into. Nurnen is a sea in the southern part of Mordor, near the warrior country of Khand.
3. Gandalf, Radagast, and Saruman are the ONLY Istari in Middle-Earth.

Answer: False

There were two other Istari in Middle-Earth besides Gandalf, Radagast, and Saruman. These wizards were known as the blue wizards, and were spoken of very little in the works of Tolkien.
4. A great battle was fought in the year 3434 of the second age. It was an alliance of men and elves against the forces of the servant of Morgoth, Sauron. What was the name (or place) of the great battle before the gates of Mordor?

Answer: Plain of Dagorlad

Dagor means battle in Tolkien's language, and lad means plain, which means that Dagorlad was fought on the plain before the Morannon in front of Mordor. Dagor Bregollach was one of the 5 battles of Beleriand, as told in the Silmarillion. Dagorbad is one that I made up to fill space.
5. What was the original name for Minas Tirith (The City on Guard)?

Answer: Minas Anor

Minas Anor was the grand city of Gondor until Minas Ithil was taken by the 9 ringwraiths. Then the name of the 7 layer-city was changed to Minas Tirith, The Tower of Guard. Minas Tirith and Minas Morgul (previously Minas Ithil) were two cities of humungous strength staring at each other from across a field, the Pelennor Field.
6. Isildur was the youngest son of Elendil the Tall.

Answer: False

Anarion was the youngest son of Elendil the Tall, and he was one of the great battle heroes of Dagorlad. Although Anarion was able to escape the drowning of Numenor, he was not able to dodge a large rock thrown from Barad-Dur. He was slain in the long siege of Barad-Dur, and he eventually had northern Gondor named after him.
7. Aragorn is distantly related to Gil-Galad.

Answer: True

It's pretty distant. Aragorn's lineage traces back (through a number of generations) through Isuldur and Elendil to Earendil, whose mother was the elf Idril. According to 'The Silmarillion', Gil-Galad was descended from Idril's brother Fingon. Tolkien seemed to have several changes of mind as to the exact place of Gil-Galad in the elven genealogy, and his father is sometimes given as being Orodreth, which would place him in the House of Finarfin instead of the House of Fingolfin. Since Fingolfin and Finarfin were brothers, there is still a relationship, but even more distant.
8. What are the warriors of Khand called?

Answer: Variags

Variags seem to be a wicked type of men, sort of like the Haradrim from Harad, but are larger and more fearsome. Although Tolkien didn't really tell much about these warriors, they are talked about a little on pages 121 and 122 in "The Return of the King".
9. The Ice Bay of Forochel is the last remnants of the Helcaraxe.

Answer: True

When Valinor disappeared from the world, the Helcaraxe split, and formed a bay, which was the Ice Bay of Forochel.
10. Who was the last King of Arthedain?

Answer: Arvedui

Arvedui drowned in the Ice Bay of Forochel when his ship sank. With him went the king's guard, and the palantir of Fornost. Arathorn was a chieftan of the Dunedain and Aragorn's father, Earendur was just a king in the middle of the growing of Arnor, and Aranarth was the first chieftan of the Dunedain, and was also the the last son of the Last King Arvedui.
11. Aragorn is related to Anarion.

Answer: True

Yes, it's true. Aragorn is also a descendent of Isildur, and Anarion is his brother, so it seems obvious that he has the same blood as Anarion flowing in his veins.
12. Emyn Arnen, a mountain, is just south of what major city?

Answer: Osgiliath

I don't really know much about Emyn Arnen, except that it is in South Ithilien, and is one mountain sticking up out of the flat plains of Ithilien.
13. What island is off the coast, near Ered Luin?

Answer: Himling

Himling is the last remaining part of Beleriand remaining. After the breaking of the world, that one small chunk of land survived the dreadful change, and stayed near the old mountains of Ered Luin.
14. Belegost is an ancient dwarven city in the Grey Mountains.

Answer: False

Belegost is an ancient dwarven city in the Blue Mountains, where it has been since Durin the Deathless woke up and made it after Aule did not kill him. Belegost was abandoned due to over population, and Khazad-Dum was then founded.
15. Easy one.... who is the King of Arda?

Answer: Manwe

Melkor was originally the High King of the Valar, until he fell into darkness. Manwe then became the King of the Valar, and then became known as the King of Arda. From Manwe originated Thorondor (great eagle), whose descendent Gwaihir defeated the Nazgul at the Last Battle at the Black Gate in "The Return of the King".
