Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the village where Bilbo Baggins, Frodo Baggins and Sam Gamgee lived?

Answer: Hobbiton

Hobbiton-on-the-Hill was one of the oldest villages in the Shire. It was in the Westfarthing.
2. In which year did the hobbits cross the river and start to settle in The Shire?

Answer: 1601 Third Age

The hobbits had been living in Bree and the areas around it, but crossed the Brandywine river by permission of King Argeleb II. The Shire then began with Year One of Shire Reckoning.
3. What was generally accepted by the Fourth Age as the westernmost barriers of the Shire?

Answer: Tower Hills

The Tower Hills were crowned with three elf-towers, built in Elder Days. Elanor Gamgee, daughter of Samwise, moved here with her husband Fastred of Greenholm, in the year 1462 Shire Reckoning.
4. Which place was accepted by the hobbits to be 'as near the centre of the Shire as makes no matter'?

Answer: Three Farthing Stone

The Shire was split into four administrative districts: the Eastfarthing, the Westfarthing, the Northfarthing and the Southfarthing. They erected an obelisk at the point where three pf these (East, South and West) met, a mile or so south of the Bywater Pool, on the Great East Road.
5. Which of these is NOT a month in the Shire calendar?

Answer: Overlithe

There were 12 months in the Shire calendar, with 30 days each. The additional days were holidays - 3 days for Lithe at midsummer, and two days for Yule, in midwinter. In Leap years there was an extra day, which was added to the Lithe festival, and was called Overlithe.
6. Which of these was NOT the name of a day in the Shire week? (According to "The Lord of the Rings")

Answer: Wednesday

The hobbit week, by the time of the War of the Ring, began on Sterday, then continued with Sunday, Monday, Trewsday, Hevensday, Mersday and Highday.
In "The Hobbit", however, Wednesday is mentioned. It is just one of several anomalies between "The Hobbit" and "LOTR".
7. Where were the Lockholes, originally meant for storage, but used as prisons by Saruman during the occupation of the Shire in 3019 Third Age?

Answer: Michel Delving

Lobelia Sackville-Baggins was one of the many hobbits imprisoned here by Sharkey and his ruffians.
8. How far was it from Bag End to the Green Dragon Inn at Bywater?

Answer: More than a mile

Bilbo ran there to meet the dwarves. He took ten minutes, surely a record for someone with such short legs.
9. In which village was the inn The Golden Perch?

Answer: Stock

Pippin and Sam had wanted to stop here during the journey from Bag End to Crickhollow, but Frodo made them take the short cut.
10. Why was Bandobras 'Bullroarer' Took famous to the hobbits?

Answer: He was 4 feet 5 inches tall and could ride a horse

He was also the first hobbit to fight and win a battle, in 2747 Shire Reckoning. He defeated orcs at the Battle of Greenfields. Pipeweed was first grown by Tobold Hornblower, and the first hobbits to enter the Shire were Marcho and Blanco.
