Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the story, almost all of the family has reunited at the Ridge, but who is missing and who is new?

Answer: William and Buck are elsewhere; Jenny, Rachel and Fanny are new to the Ridge.

In the previous book, "Written In My Own Heart's Blood", that leads up to the current situation:
1) Rachel has married Ian and come back to the Ridge with him.
2) Jenny was staying with Fergus and his family until their print shop burnt down, and then she traveled to Frasers Ridge with Jamie, Claire, Ian and Rachel.
4) William left Fanny at Frasers Ridge to find his identity after learning of his true parentage.
5) Buck attempted to return to his own time and wife through the stones.
2. How do Brianna and William meet again?

Answer: Lord John sends William to where Brianna was staying to paint a portrait

William went to the house where Brianna was commissioned to paint a portrait. He was sent by Lord John who did not tell him that Brianna was there- the last time they had met William was unaware of his true parentage, and that Brianna was his half sister. William insisted on escorting Brianna to paint the portrait of the dead general. Brianna apologizes for not telling William who he really was when they first met; and he states that he would not have been able to handle it then.
3. Who kidnapped Lord John?

Answer: Ezekiel Richardson

William asked Jamie and Uncle Hal, Duke of Pardloe, for help when Lord John was kidnapped. Lord John was taken by Ezekiel Richardson, who wants to stop the Duke from making a speech that could change the outcome of the war. Ezekiel also turns out to also be a time traveler. He was holding Lord John on a ship, and Percy was poisoned before he could tell William of John's location, and the ship was then found to have left.
4. Why do Ian and Rachel go to see Emily, Ian's ex wife, at the reservation?

Answer: To check on Emily after news of an Indian massacre

Ian, Rachel, and their son went to the reservation to check on Emily after news of an Indian massacre. While there, they found Emily to be safe. Emily named their son Hunter; and then allowed her son, considered Ian's spirit child, to go back to the Ridge with Ian and Rachel.
5. Who does William fall in love with?

Answer: Amaranthus Cowden

William developed feelings for his brother Benjamin's widow, who is a new mother, staying with his stepfather, Lord John, and Uncle Hal. He then finds that the body in his brother's grave is not Ben. William finds Ben still alive, having joined the continental army, and married to an unnamed black patriot woman; and that Amaranthus knew this.
6. What almost ruins Fanny's friendship/courtship with Cyrus Crombie?

Answer: He accidentally drops a precious drawing of her late sister in the river.

Cyrus' brother Hiram, asked Jamie's permission for Cyrus to spend time with Fanny. Jamie agreed to supervised non courtship time, which they spend by the river fishing.
7. What are the names of Roger and Brianna's children?

Answer: Jem, Mandy, Davy

Jem and Mandy were born in the 17th century, but the family had to return to the 1960's because Mandy had a heart problem that could not be repaired. However, when the family returned to the Ridge, Brianna became pregnant with her third child, and it was a little boy. They named him Davy.
8. Who is Claire mentoring to learn about medical care?

Answer: Fanny

Fanny was born tongue-tied and Claire performs a frenectomy on her. Fanny begins to show an interest in medicine which Claire encourages.
9. What is the purpose of Ulysses' visit to Fraser's Ridge?

Answer: To find Jocasta and to take Fraser's Ridge away from Jamie

Ulysses came to Fraser's Ridge as a British soldier. His main objective was to acquire Jamie's land, stating that as a Catholic, Jamie can not be a landowner; and Ulysses had the deed to the Ridge. Ulysses also wanted to know where Jamie's Aunt Jocasta (with whom he previously had a romantic relationship) was living.

When Jamie said he didn't know, Ulysses then showed Jamie the letter stating that he must vacate the Ridge and turn it over to Ulysses.
10. Who does Bobby Higgins marry after Amy's untimely death?

Answer: Sylvia Hardman

After Amy died of injuries from a bear attack, Bobby was left to raise 3 children by himself. He met Sylvia at the Ridge but did not think he was good enough for her because of the murderer's brand on his face. Sylvia did not think she was good enough for him either, because she had turned to prostitution after her husband abandoned her and her three daughters.

They eventually agreed to marry, with encouragement from their families.
