Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Hit you with a(n) _____? Your own uncle? Why on earth!?"

Answer: ax

Claire said this, when Jamie wondered out loud whether his uncle was responsible for the ax wound at the back of his head. Claire knew, as well as Jamie, that only the Scots carried the lochaber ax - the English would use only swords and guns.
2. "It's always ___ hundred years in the Highland stories...the same thing as 'Once upon a time.'"

Answer: two

It's two hundred years - Claire travels back two hundred years, as well as Gelie, Brianna and Roger, (from the 1900s to the 1700s). Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your point of view) they arrived in a very lively time - there were two Jacobite Risings, skirmishes between France and England, and, of course, the American Revolution.
3. "I, Geillis Duncan, do confess that I am a witch, and the ______ of Satan."

Answer: mistress

Geillis said this to the people of Cranesmuir, in order to give Jamie and Claire time to escape. By admitting herself to be a witch, she would be burned at the stake. Witches couldn't be killed with the steel, although some witches were killed first and then burned, so not everyone was burned alive.
4. "Ye werena the first lass I _____, but I swear you'll be the last."

Answer: kissed

Jamie tells this to Claire when she asks if he regrets not marrying a local girl, as was the custom in those parts. Marriages were usually decided among parents, for the creation of alliances and lands. It would have been extremely out of the ordinary for a Highland Scot to marry an Englishwoman.
5. "It was _____ that gave Jamie to the Watch?"

Answer: MacNab

MacNab gave Jamie up to the Watch in revenge for Jamie taking his son. Claire thought that Jamie was justified in taking the boy, as his father treated him very poorly. When MacNab betrayed Jamie, the rest of tenants killed him, for foresaking his oath.
6. "He's [Jamie] a heart like a ______ and a heid like an ______."

Answer: lion, ox

Murtagh tells this very quietly to Claire when Jamie's nearly dying of seasickness. As Wentworth was a huge and powerful prison, if you did escape, it would be a good idea to get out of the country.
7. "I knew ye'd feed me, if I offered ye a suitable _____."

Answer: inducement

Jamie is quite pleased with himself when he gets Claire to give him an egg for breakfast instead of milk and bread. Meat was the favourite meal in the 1700s, but it does tend to be hard on the stomach.
8. "Ye know the fortress I told ye of, the one inside me? Well, I've built a ____ , at least."

Answer: lean-to

Jamie says this to Claire near the end of the book, assuring her that he has control of his soul once again.
9. "Dropping the ____ was a perfectly normal reaction. Dropping it into Mr. Bainbridge's lap was merely an accident of placement."

Answer: teapot

Claire drops the very hot teapot into Mr. Bainbridge's lap, swearing quite loudly, which earns her a nasty glare from Frank. I suppose that swearing very loudly and dropping a teapot into a professor's lap is not the best thing you can do.
10. "A _____ witch, you are."

Answer: candlelight

Frank says this to Claire, commenting on how she looks very good in candlelight. The electricity had gone out from the storm, leaving Claire to light candles in order to see. When Frank comes in, we hear the story about the ghost.
11. "The man himself might have been Frank's _____."

Answer: brother

Claire thinks this when she runs into Jack Randall for the first time. The Randalls, apparently, have a very strong physical resemblance, which makes Claire think that Jack is Frank for a few minutes.
12. "Have you anything to say to me now, Madam?" "Your _____ is crooked."

Answer: wig

Jack has no idea about who Claire is (and with good reason). He fully intends on "questioning" her, to find out who she is, and hits her in the stomach because of her sarcastic nature. Her response to this was probably not the answer Jack was expecting.
13. "You are ____ of my _____ and bone of my bone..."

Answer: blood, blood

This is the blood vow that Jamie and Claire swear. Apparently it was customary to swear the regular Christian oaths, and a more primitive oath was well, which involved the mixing of the bride and groom's blood.
14. "A thousand and a hundred score / A hundred and a ______ more."

Answer: thousand

The Catallus poem that Hugh gives Claire for a wedding present - it's also engraved in her ring. Hugh was a teacher before he was captured by the Turks, and therefore knew a bit about Latin poetry.
15. "You mean to tell me that you married me out of ________?"

Answer: love

Claire was quite surprised when Jamie told her this - she was expecting his marriage with her had to do with his intricate family relations. As we find out later, Jamie's grandfather, Lord Lovat, was very displeased at his grandson's choice of wife.
