Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these places does not feature in the film, but plays a major role in the book?

Answer: The home of Tom Bombadil

In the book, Mr. Bombadil plays a mighty large role in helping the Hobbits out of a jam.
2. Who does Frodo ask for the Elvish word for "friend" outside Moria?

Answer: Gandalf in the movie, but he never asks in the book

I always wondered why he didn't ask Legolas, it'd make sense...
3. True or false: Arwen collects Frodo after he is stabbed by the Morgal blade in both the movie and the book.

Answer: False

In the book, he was actually collected by Glorfindel.
4. Which of these gifts was given to party members by Galadriel and the people of Lorien in the book, but not in the movie?

Answer: A box of dirt

The leaf pins are given and seen in the movie, but they are not actually mentioned. The phial is the only one of Galadriel's gifts actually shown and mentioned (though the sword was repaired), and the boats were in both.
5. When the Hobbits go to Bree and enter the Prancing Pony, in the book they receive a note from Gandalf. Do they receive this note in the movie?

Answer: No

The Barkeep says "I've not seen him for six months" in relation to Gandalf, and does not speak of a note.
6. Which of the following Hobbit names was not mentioned in the standard edition film, but played a role in the book (look and listen carefully)?

Answer: Sandyman

(thanks to anyone who pointed out my mistake ;-)

Ted Sandyman is the miller in the Shire, and is in the Green Dragon in the extended edition, but makes no appearance in the standard edition.
7. In the movie, the first encounter with Elves occurs after the party meet Strider. At what point do they first meet them in the book?

Answer: Before they meet Strider and before they gain Merry

Frodo, Pippin (see note) and Sam encounter a group of Elves from the Towerlands, wandering and singing. Note: Sorry about the mix up everybody, Pip was there... Thankyou everyone who told me I was wrong :)
8. Which of the final Nine companions are NOT at the first council of Elrond (where Frodo says he will take the Ring) in the book, but are in the movie?

Answer: Merry and Pippin

Sam, Merry and Pippin are all at the council in the movie, eavesdropping on the council (Elrond looks amused at Sam, but unhappy at Merry and Pippin). Merry and Pippin are told by Frodo of the quest before the company is formed, but they are not there for the first council in the book.
9. How does Gandalf contact the Eagle to save him from the top of Isengard in the book and the movie?

Answer: Book: Radagast the Brown, Movie: A large moth

The moth used in the movie is actually an Emperor Gum Moth, found in Australia and New Zealand. In the book, Gandalf tells the council of Radagast the Brown.
10. In the original cut of "Lord of the Rings" (not the new extended DVD), which event does not occur which has an effect on the book "Two Towers"?

Answer: Gimli falling in love with Galadriel

Though all of the events have an effect on "Two Towers", Gimli's love for Galadriel was the only thing not in the original cut of the movie.
11. In the movie, Frodo has the Ring for a rather short period of time before Gandalf returns to see if it is the One. How long does he have it in the book?

Answer: Gandalf returns when Frodo is almost fifty

Frodo turned 33 on Bilbo's Eleventy-first birthday, and Frodo's Fiftieth birthday is approaching by the time Gandalf returns.
12. When Merry and Pippin join the party, in both cases Pippin says that intelligence is required in the party. What is said by whom afterwards, in the book?

Answer: Gandalf says: "Then you shall certainly not be chosen, Peregrin Took!"

In the movie, Merry says "Well that rules you out, Pip."
Pippin's intelligence is in question throughout both the movie and the book.
13. Is there a Cave Troll in Moria, in both the movie and the book?

Answer: Yes

Legolas actually doesn't kill it in the book; Gandalf seals the tomb door with magic.
14. Upon entering Lothlorien, the party encounters Elves. In the movie, Gimli is speaking of the perils of Lorien, then the Elves appear and complain of his noise. How does this occur in the book?

Answer: Legolas tried to climb a tree, the Elves call saying that Sam breathes too loud

Lorien is one of the places in which the difference is major. Legolas does not have any inclination to sleep in a tree in the movie. The book doesn't involve Elves trying to shoot at them, nor Aragorn speaking to them in Elven (when again, Legolas would have been the logical choice, Prince of Mirkwood and all). I realise (thanks to Gertrude Gizz ^_^ ) that whether Legolas is talking to Sam or everyone is open to interpretation, but Sam is the one who reacts by covering his mouth.
15. In which book and which film does the Fellowship lose Boromir?

Answer: Movie: "Fellowship of the Ring", Book: "Two Towers"

Boromir dies in the first chapter of "Two Towers" in the book (sorry to those who have only read "Fellowship").
