Rich is very unhappy when he realises that his entire future is being manipulated for the purpose of "The Game" - he was happy working with his father, and when his settled, secure future is snatched away and he is forced to move into the city with the group, he is devastated.

Their first visit to what will eventually be their new home begins at the Mesa. They climb to the top to get a good look all around them, and the "trip" ends when Lisse slips and falls on the way back down. At this point the group have no way of knowing if the visits are real or imaginary.

On their very first visit to "The Game" they were told that the prize would be their "heart's desire" if they managed to win it, so they name their new home Prize to acknowledge that they had indeed won The Game.

Lisse is convinced her baby will be a girl, and sets out to write down the story of the group, how they came to Prize, met their spouses from the other group, and built their community, so that her daughter will know her parents' history one day.
