Citadel of Krath is where the oathbreakers live; Athlone's uncle is their leader.

In the past the Hunnuli were mounts of sorcerers, now there are only a few Hunnuli are left in the clans. The Hunnuli choose their riders and stay with them for life. All riders of Hunnuli are sorcerers, as Athlone will find out at the end.

Piers' daughter was killed in the city of Pra Desh for supposedly using sorcery.
Piers feels that by helping Gabria it will make him feel better as he was unable to save his daughter. This was the reason he left Pra Desh and made a life with the people of the Khulinin.

Gabria sensed the magic in the brooch and told Savaric a story of a sorcerer who put a surveillance spell on a jewel to watch upon his wife and how she thought Medb was trying to spy on Savaric and Ahlone. His plan backfires as Savaric and Ahlone used it to make Medb think they are fighting about the leadership of the clan.

The book of Matrach was a spell book belonging to the sorcerer Matrach who was alive when magic was used openly amongst the clans. When the people of the clans turn their backs on magic the spell books were lost until Medb found one book.

Branth stabbed Savaric in the back and steals the book as he thinks he has magic powers. He gets away and appears in the next book.
Cor is the man bullying Gabria, whom she kills with magic before she gains control.
Jorlan is the leader of the clan outriders.
Cantrell is a bard who tells both Gabria and Medb a riddle, both of which come true.

Athlone starts to have feelings for her as soon as he finds out she was a girl and starts to worry about what will happen to her if she fights Medb or if his father finds out she is a girl. When she returns to the woman of the marsh he follows and rescues her. They spend the next five days camped by the river as a time of healing. Ahlone gives her his golden cloak as a betrothal gift.
