Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the first name of the protagonist Kipps, a young London lawyer, whose task is to organize the papers of the recently deceased Mrs Alice Drablow?

Answer: Arthur

Arthur Kipps is a young lawyer working in London, supporting his fiancée Stella. One November, his boss Mr Bentley assigns him the task of traveling to a small village called Crythin Gifford somewhere on England's east coast, in order to arrange the papers of the recently deceased Alice Drablow. Kipps is at first quite happy to do the task, proud that Mr Bentley is entrusting him with something on his own, and hopes that he can work his way up through the firm.
2. Which of these names is NOT one that leads Kipps to designate the area as the "land of curious place-names" while traveling on the train to Crythin Gifford with a villager, Mr Daily?

Answer: Monk's Piece

Of these, only Monk's Piece is not situated in the area of Crythin Gifford; it is the name of the house that Kipps now lives in, long after the events he recalls from Crythin Gifford, with his wife Esmé and her children.

Eel Marsh House is the name of the residence of Alice Drablow, while the Nine Lives Causeway is the road that leads to it through the marshes, which becomes flooded with the tides. Mr Bentley first mentions both of these names to Kipps, and while he is traveling on the train later that day, Mr Daily mentions the Gapemouth Tunnel while the train is delayed, leading Kipps to remark of the "land of the curious place-names".
3. Where does Kipps first catch sight of the woman in black, characterized by the extreme wasting of her flesh and her black mourning clothes?

Answer: In the church at Mrs Drablow's funeral.

Kipps is conducted to the funeral by Mr Jerome, the agent who had dealt before with Mrs Drablow's business for her various properties. He is quite astonished that only he and Mr Jerome, both unrelated and not friends of Mrs Drablow, are the ones attending her funeral.

He is somewhat relieved when he first sees the woman mourning in the church, as it means someone has cared for Mrs Drablow and is grieving for her. He realizes something is strange about it when Mr Jerome reacts with great shock upon his description of her, denying he saw a woman even while Kipps can see her in the churchyard.
4. When he returns to Mrs Drablow's house to sort her papers after the first haunting, Kipps's reading material includes a book of poetry by John Clare and a novel by whom?

Answer: Sir Walter Scott

Kipps refers quite a few times to his Walter Scott novel, which is named at one point as "The Heart of Midlothian". He settles into Eel Marsh House for several days with the dog, Spider, for company, bringing along with him provisions for food and drink as well as the books for the bedroom he has chosen to inhabit.

It is after he has read some of the Walter Scott that he hears strange bumping coming from behind a door that doesn't seem to have a key.
5. One aspect of Kipps's haunting is sounds rather than sights. Which of these horrible deaths does he hear various times?

Answer: A pony and trap drowning in the marshes.

After seeing the woman again in the small graveyard of Eel Marsh House, Kipps begins to realize that she is a ghost. Unnerved by this and unwilling to stay in the house any longer, he begins to walk back over the Nine Lives Causeway without waiting to be picked up by the driver, Keckwick, when a sudden sea mist blows in, blocking his sight and disorienting him.

When he hears the sound of a pony and trap, he is at first relieved that Keckwick has arrived, but then the sound recedes from him and instead he hears a churning and sucking sound and the pony's panic.

He stands absolutely helpless, shrouded in the fog, as the terrible sound of a terrified child's sobbing and screaming reaches his ears; it especially affects him as at the time he believes it to be happening at the very instant rather than a ghostly echo of a past event.
6. After Kipps rescues Spider the dog from sinking into the quicksand of the marshes, who picks him up in a pony and trap while he is in a faint by the causeway?

Answer: Mr Daily

Mr Daily has lent his dog Spider to Kipps to keep him company at Eel Marsh House, and while the dog does offer him comfort, she also seems to sense something else in the house. After she wakes him up one morning yearning to get out, they go out onto the marshes together and Spider suddenly senses and chases something, getting herself stuck in the quicksand of the marshes. Kipps almost sinks under himself while rescuing her, and by the time he has freed them both, he is both mentally and physically exhausted, and faints away after hearing the sound of an approaching pony and trap. Rather than the pony and trap he has been hearing, it turns out to be Mr Daily, who was worried about Kipps in the haunted house.

He recovers at the Dailys' house.
7. Kipps discovers letters to Mrs Drablow from a young woman, Jennet, whose son Nathaniel was adopted by Mrs. Drablow, as Jennet was unmarried. What is the relationship between Mrs Drablow and Jennet?

Answer: Sisters

While reading the letters, Kipps has no idea if there was any relationship between the two beyond the adoption, but can not find answers within the letters themselves, which are mostly signed "J". From the letters he discovers that J, or Jennet, was unmarried and pregnant, and after her son was born, she was pressured to give him up, but refused, proclaiming that she'd sooner kill the both of them than to give him to strangers.

Instead, her sister Alice and her husband adopted the boy, Nathaniel, as a Drablow. Kipps only finds out later from Mr Daily that the two were sisters.
8. Whose father was killed in the accident that killed Jennet's six-year-old son Nathaniel before she could run away with the child?

Answer: Keckwick's

The accident was that of the pony and trap drowning in the marshes that had haunted Kipps on various occasions. In Mrs Drablow's papers, Kipps finds the death certificates of the boy and his nursemaid, Rose Judd, as well as that of Jennet, who died twelve years after the death of her son, which she had watched from a window of the house while waiting for the pony and trap to return. Alice, her sister, had banned Jennet from seeing Nathaniel, but relented to allow her occasional visits; as they became close, Jennet decided to run away with her biological son, but the accident killed him before she was able, and Jennet blamed Alice.

While Kipps and Mr Daily are discussing Jennet, Daily mentions that Keckwick the driver was also killed, and for a moment Kipps is astonished, thinking of the driver Keckwick who brings him back and forth to the house, after which Daily explains it was the father of the present Keckwick who died.
9. Mr Daily explains that every time the woman in black is sighted, a child of the village dies, usually in an apparent accident or illness. Which of these townspeople lost a child to her wrath?

Answer: Mr Jerome

Kipps convinces himself that after Mrs Drablow's death, that should be the end of Jennet's wrath, but Mr. Daily insists that after each sighting, a child invariably dies. After Kipps asks, "You mean any child? A child of the village?", Daily replies, "Any child. Jerome's child". Suddenly Mr Jerome's extreme reaction at the funeral makes more sense to Kipps, who realizes that it was beyond the mere fright at the ghost, but a personal grief and horror.
10. Does Kipps fall victim to the curse of the woman in black of losing his child?

Answer: Yes

After he returns to London, Kipps marries his fiancée Stella, and about a year later they have a baby boy together, whom they name Joseph Arthur Samuel, Arthur after Kipps himself and Samuel after Mr Daily. One day the family goes to the park where there is a donkey and a pony and trap to ride in. Stella takes Joseph into the pony and trap, and while watching them happily, Kipps once again spots the woman in black, Jennet.

He manages to stay relatively calm until the pony and trap returns from its ride, and suddenly the pony is spooked, causing the trap to hit a tree. Baby Joseph is sadly killed instantly, while Stella dies nearly a year later from her injuries.
