Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these is not a novel by Jane Austen?

Answer: Jane Eyre

Jane Eyre was written by Charlotte Bronte.
2. In John Irving's 'A Prayer for Owen Meany' how does Owen accidentally kill his best friend's mother?

Answer: During a baseball game he strikes a ball that hits her head

Owen Meany is one of the most incredible literary creations. He is a small underdeveloped boy with a squeaky voice. He spends his childhood working towards the one big moment of crucial importance (that he has seen in a dream) where he knows his little stature and childish voice will mean the difference between life and death... I don't want to give anything away as I strongly recommend you read this fabulous book.
3. In the Booker Prize winning 'The Life of Pi' what animal is Pi eventually left alone with on the boat?

Answer: Tiger

All these animals end up on the small life raft after the ship goes down but only Richard Parker, the tiger, survives the long journey with Pi. Written by Yann Martel.
4. Which Paul Auster book tells the story of two men, Nashe and Pozzi, forced to give up their liberty and build a very, very long wall after losing at a game of cards?

Answer: The Music of Chance

This is so far the only one of Paul Auster's novels to be adapted into film - the movie starred James Spader. Auster did then go on to write screenplays such as 'Smoke' starring Harvey Keitel.
5. Which French author's most famous book opens with the words: "Today my mother is dead."?

Answer: Camus

Flaubert wrote Madame Bovary; Moliere wrote plays mostly, including 'The Misanthrope'; Emile Zola wrote 'Therese Raquin'. Camus also wrote the excellent 'The Plague'.
6. What are the first names of the Trask brothers in John Steinbeck's 'East of Eden'?

Answer: Aaron and Caleb

Tom and Noah are the brothers from the Joad family in 'The Grapes of Wrath'. George and Lenny are from 'Of Mice and Men'. Cain and Abel are (obviously) from the Old Testament; it is this ancient brotherly dynamic on which the relationship of Cal and Aaron draws parallels.
7. Tim O'Brien's novel 'The Things They Carried' was set during which war?

Answer: Vietnam War

An incredible war book that concentrates not so much on the heroics and fighting but on the people beneath the uniforms. It is a real character study of the young men and 'the things they carried', from the literal things they packed in their backpacks such as photographs and letters to the mental weights that they carried also - the guilt and horrors of war.
8. Which Japanese author wrote the bizarrely titled books: 'The Elephant Vanishes', 'Hard-boiled Wonderland and the End of the World', 'Sputnik Sweetheart' and 'The Wind-up Bird Chronicle'?

Answer: Haruki Murakami

Murakami is my personal favourite Japanese author. His novels are really cyber-punky, uniting east and west, tragedy and farce, slang and philosophy.
9. "It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to, than I have ever known." The closing quotation from which Dickens' novel?

Answer: A Tale of Two Cities

This speech is spoken from the gallows by Sydney Carton. He has taken the place of Charles Darnay, to whom he bears a striking resemblance. He sacrifices himself for the love of a woman who he knows will never love him back; by letting Charles live and dying in his place he feels he can atone for the disolute life he has lived and only then become worthy of the love he feels for Lucie Manette.
10. In which of F.Scott Fitzgerald's novels do Amory Blaine and Rosalind fall in love? (Although she does subsequently break up with him because he is too poor.)

Answer: This Side of Paradise

Fitzgerald wrote the scene where Rosalind breaks up with Amory in play format. This makes the moment all the more poignant and melodramatic, which echoes the emotions of the characters.
