Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's begin with the fundamentals: The Dwarves were not counted among the Children of Iluvatar, because they were created by a single Vala. Who was it?

Answer: Aule the Smith

Aule created the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves because he was impatient for the coming of the Elves and because he wanted to teach his crafts. Eru Iluvatar rebuked Aule, who offered him his creation, even grabbing a hammer to smite the Dwarves. But then, Iluvatar showed mercy to Aule and allowed the Dwarves to exist.

However, they would be put to sleep and rewoken after the Awakening of the Elves.
2. Of the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves, we know only the name of Durin. Durin, also known as the Deathless, awoke without a spouse at Mount Gundabad. The Dwarven clan he ruled came to be known as Durin's Folk. What was their other name?

Answer: Longbeards

The Longbeards are said to be the most prominent of all Dwarven clans. They originally inhabited the Misty Mountains, where they built the city of Khazad-dum. In the First Age, the splendor of Khazad-dum was heard of even by the Elves of Beleriand, whilst in the Second Age and for a great part of the Third, the city prospered, and its name was renowned in the whole Westlands of Middle-Earth.
3. Two of the Fathers of the Dwarves awakened at Mount Dolmed, at the Blue Mountains. There, they founded two clans. What are their names?

Answer: Firebeards and Broadbeams

The Firebeards and Broadbeams founded the cities of Nogrod and Belegost. However, it is unknown whether each city belonged to a separate clan or whether they lived together in those two cities. They played a significant role in the events of the First Age.

It is suggested that, after the War of Wrath and the expulsion of Morgoth from Arda, what was left of the Firebeards and Broadbeams migrated to Khazad-dum.
4. The other four clans of the Dwarves are clouded by obscurity. They are the Dwarves of the far eastern mansions, and are known to have originated from the mountain range called Orocarni. What does this name mean?

Answer: Red Mountains

The word "Orocarni" comes from Quenya, the ancient language of the High Elves. The Orocarni are located in the vast and uncharted lands of Middle-Earth known as Rhun. From the slopes of the Orocarni flows a river emptying in the inland Sea of Helcar. The Orocarni are connected to a range named Ered Engrin, aka the Yellow Mountains.
5. Apart from the Seven Clans, there was an eighth group of Dwarves. They were not a separate clan, but exiles. How were they known?

Answer: Petty Dwarves

The Petty Dwarves likely came from the far eastern mansions. They differed from other Dwarves in several ways, such as being more stunted in appearance, more antisocial and easily revealing their names in Khuzdul, the secret Dwarvish language. The Petty Dwarves were the first of the race to encounter Elves.

The Elves not only seized the lands of the Petty Dwarves, but also hunted them to the point of extinction, viewing them as bothersome animals. After the Elves established contact with the Dwarves of the Blue Mountains, the Petty Dwarves were left alone, but they had come to hate everything Elvish with a passion.
6. The Dwarves of the Blue Mountains were the ones who played a significant role in the events of the First Age. They founded the cities of Nogrod and Belegost. However, those names are Elvish, not Khuzdul. What are the Khuzdul names for the two cities?

Answer: Tumunzahar and Gabilgathol

"Tumunzahar" means "Hollowbold" in Khuzdul, whereas "Nogrod" means "Dwarf Hollow" in the Elvish tongue Sindarin. "Gabilgathol" means "Great City" in Khuzdul, and "Belegost", its Sindarin name, translates into "Great Fortress". "Khazad-dum" means "Dwarf-city" and the Elves called it Moria, "Black Pit", after it was deserted in Third Age 1981, due to the emergence of a Balrog, known as Durin's Bane. "Bodruith" was the name of a Dwarf king, used only in the early drafts of Tolkien's legendarium.
7. The greatest opponents of the Dwarves are Orcs. The first reported clash between the two races takes place after the battle the Elves call Dagor-nuin-Giliath. How does this name translate into English?

Answer: Battle Under the Stars

The Dagor-nuin-Giliath was the first battle between the Noldorin Elves and the Dark Lord Morgoth. When the Elves under Feanor landed in Middle-Earth, Morgoth sent a host of Orcs to combat them. The Orcs were routed and their remnants were utterly destroyed by the Dwarves. Feanor pursued the fell creatures until the gates of Angband, Morgoth's stronghold, where he was killed by Gothmog, Lord of Balrogs, making the battle a bittersweet victory for the forces opposing Morgoth.
8. The most dramatic of the Battles of Beleriand was the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, the Battle of Unnumbered Tears. The Union of Maedhros, co-led by Maedhros, the firstborn son of Feanor, and Fingon, the High King of the Noldor, was defeated by the Dark Lord Morgoth. The Dwarves were present in the battle. Their leader was killed by the dragon Glaurung, but not before he managed to inflict on the dragon a grievous wound, forcing him to retreat from the battlefield and saving the Free Peoples from total destruction. What was this dwarf's name?

Answer: Azaghal

Azaghal was the Lord of Belegost. His name, which is a Khuzdul one, probably means "warrior". Azaghal had been a friend of Maedhros before the battle, since Maedhros had rescued him from an Orc ambush in East Beleriand. As a reward, Azaghal gave Maedhros his Dragon-helm, which had been made by smith Telchar of Nogrod.
9. Remember the exiled Dwarves from question 5? They were involved the most tragic of the First Age tales, the Tale of the Children of Hurin. The last three members of the clan, a father and his two sons, Ibun and Khim, were espied by Turin, son of Hurin, and the Outlaws he was captaining, whilst searching for some roots. The father was captured and was forced to share his dwelling with the Outlaws. What was his name?

Answer: Mim

Mim and his two sons were the last of the Petty Dwarves. After his capture, Mim led the Outlaws into his halls, known as Amon Rudh. There he discovered that his son Khim had been killed by an arrow fired by one of the Outlaws moments before his capture. Turin promised Mim that, in case he stumbled upon a hoard, he would give Mim a compensation. The Outlaws made Mim's halls their basement.
A while later, Beleg, an Elf and friend of Turin, found him at Amon Rudh and, together, they warred against the Dark Lord Morgoth. Mim, however, was unhappy by the Elf's presence in his halls. One night, he and his son Ibun went out of the house to find roots. They were captured by Orcs, who forced Mim to reveal the location of Amon Rudh on the condition that Turin would not be harmed and Beleg would be left for Mim to finish off. However, Beleg managed to get released from his bonds (in another version, he was freed by one of the Outlaws) and Mim left the place, frightened.

After the Fall of Nargothrond, Mim, now last of the Petty Dwarves, moved there and took possession of the hoard of the dragon Glaurung, who had been slain by Turin. Mim had a right to the treasure, because the Petty Dwarves were the first occupants of Nargothrond, before the Noldor entered Beleriand. However, this did not prevent Mim from being slain by Hurin, Turin's father, because Mim had told the Orcs the location of the outlet of the Outlaws.
10. In the last century of the First Age, relations between Dwarves and Elves worsened. The two races fought for a treasure, the hoard of the dragon Glaurung, brought by the Man Hurin to Doriath, the kingdom of Elu Thingol of the Teleri. The Dwarvish city that warred with Doriath for the treasure was Nogrod; who was its King?

Answer: Naugladur

When Hurin brought the treasure to Doriath, Thingol requested craftsmen from Nogrod to work on the treasure, if their skills were sufficient. The Dwarves accepted the challenge. In the hoard was included the Nauglamir, the Necklace of the Dwarves, which had been made by Dwarven smiths for King Finord Felagund of Nargothrond. Upon the Nauglamir the craftsmen set the Silmaril given to Thingol by Beren Erchamion in order to marry the King's daughter, Luthien Tinuviel. After finishing their work, the Dwarves requested the Nauglamir as their payment. Thingol, coveting the Silmaril, told them he would give them nothing, calling them "Stunted race" and ordering them to remove themselves from his sight. After the grave insult, the smiths slew him and took their prize. However, the Elves pinned them down and killed all but two of them. The survivors told their kinsmen at Nogrod what had happened. King Naugladur organized a great host, and they marched against Doriath. At the Battle of the Thousand Caves, they were victorious and retook the Nauglamir; but they were ambushed at the Sarn Athrad, and no one survived. Beren Erchamion slew King Naugladur and took the Nauglamir. The dying Dwarf cursed the treasure. Beren died soon enough, perhaps because of the curse.

Relationships between the races were not fully healed until the end of the Third Age, when Gimli, son of Gloin, befriended Legolas, son of Thranduil.
