quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which land did the race of Men "awaken"?

Answer: Hildorien

Hildorien was a land in the far East of Middle-Earth. It took the first Men nearly three centuries of wandering to reach Beleriand.
2. Men awakened after which cosmic event?

Answer: The rising of the Sun

At the rising of the Sun, the race of Man awoke. The first rising of the Sun was in the West and that is where they began to wander and eventually entered Beleriand and became enmeshed in the affairs of the First Age.
3. True or False: Only Iluvatar knew the final fate of Man after his death.

Answer: False

"What may befall their spirits after death the Elves know not...and Mandos under Iluvatar alone save Manwe knows whither they go after the time of recollection..." (quote taken from "The Silmarillion, page 104)
4. What was the Gift of Man?

Answer: A mortal lifespan

Unlike the Elves, Man was mortal and would eventually die of old age. This was considered a blessing as it did not bind them to the world as it did the Elves. However, as Man became more powerful and materialistic, they began to envy the Elves their immortality and began to fear death. They failed to perceive the mercy of Iluvatar and instead referred to it as the Doom of Man.
5. This word was at first used to describe all Men, but was later used only in reference to those from the Three Houses of Elf-friends:

Answer: Edain

The men of Numenor were called the Dunedain, which meant "Man of the West".
6. What were the Three Houses of Elf-friends?

Answer: Houses of Beor, Haleth and Hador

Beor the Old was the leader of the first Men to cross the Blue Mountains into Beleriand. He became a servant of Finrod Felagund. Beren was descended from this House. Haleth was the daughter of Haldad and led her people, the Haladin, to the Forest of Brethil, which lay on the outskirts of Doriath. Hador was given the land of Dor-Lomin in which to settle by Fingolfin.

This was the mightiest of the Three Houses with such descendants as Hurin, Turin, Huor and Tuor. These Houses were all known as the Elf-friends, as they stayed loyal to the Elves during their long war with Morgoth.
7. Of all the stories of Men in the First Age, one of the most tragic was that of Turin, son of Hurin. Near the end of his life, he called himself Turambar. What does this mean?

Answer: Master of Doom

Hurin was a great warrior who had been captured by Morgoth, and during his imprisonment mocked and defied the Dark Lord. In response, Morgoth cursed him and his kin. Nowhere did this curse manifest itself more than in his son Turin. His tragic story is told in full in "The Silmarillion".
8. Beren was the only Man (indeed, the only person, Man or Elf) to cross which dreaded mountain range?

Answer: Ered Gorgoroth

Also known as the Mountains of Terror, they lay to the south of Dorthonion. This was a place of dread and fear, as Ungoliant made her home here and produced a great many children, including Shelob the Great. Beren crossed it on his way to Doriath and fought many of these creatures. He would speak of it to no one afterwards as he did not want to remember the horror of the place.
9. Elros, brother of Elrond, was appointed to be the first King of Numenor. What was his High Elven name?

Answer: Tar-Minyatur

The Kings of Queens of Numenor took their names in the High Elven form for many years. As their relationship with the Elves soured, they began taking their names in the old Adunaic forms, such as Ar-Gimilzor and Ar-Pharazon.
10. How many Queens ruled over Numenor?

Answer: 3

Tar-Ancalime, Tar-Telperien, and Tar-Vanimelde. The Kings of Numenor originally passed their sceptres to their firstborn son as opposed to their firstborn child. However, Tar-Aldarion had only one child, a girl, who eventually became Tar-Ancalime. This caused the rules of succession to be changed.
11. True or False: Elendil the Tall was never King of Numenor.

Answer: True

Though the line of Elendil became the line through which the Kings of Gondor and Arnor were descended, Elendil himself was never King of Numenor. Elendil was descended from Silmarien, who was the eldest child of the fourth King of Numenor, Tar-Elendil.

However, the laws of succession at that time meant that his eldest son, not his eldest child, would ascend to the throne. Later changes to the law would have allowed Silmarien to become Queen and then perhaps Elendil may have been King one day.
12. The northern kingdom of Arnor eventually became split into three provinces. Which of the following was NOT one of these provinces?

Answer: Fornost

Upon the death of King Earendur, his three sons fought for control of the throne. Each decided to take a piece of Arnor to settle this dispute. His oldest son, Amlaith, became King of Arthedain and was considered by many to be the rightful heir. Arthedain survived longer than the other two but was eventually overrun by forces of the Witch-King. Aragorn restored Arnor to its former glory at the end of the Third Age.
13. The Woses, the Haradrim, and the Dunlendings were examples of what grouping of Men?

Answer: Wild Men

Similar to the Elves, Men divided their race into divisions called High Men, Middle Men, and Wild Men. The High Men were comprised of the Dunedain, while the Middle Men mainly consisted of the Rohirrim and the Northern Men.
14. Who was the first King of Rohan?

Answer: Eorl

Eorl the Young led the Rohirrim from Eotheod, located near the northwestern edge of Mirkwood, to the fields of Calenardhon to aid the army of Gondor. Their timely assistance saved Gondor's army from an invading force of Balchoth. In gratitude, Ruling Steward Cirion granted them the lands of Calenardhon, which became known as Rohan.
15. Name the only man ever allowed to live in Valinor, where he was accounted as one of the Elves.

Answer: Tuor

"In those days Tuor felt old age creep upon him...and he built a great ship, and he named it Earrame, which is Sea-Wing; and with Idril Celebrindal he set sail into the sunset and the West...and it was sung that Tuor alone of mortal Men was numbered among the elder race, and was joined with the Noldor...and his fate is sundered from the fate of Men." (quote taken from "The Silmarillion", pages 244-245.)
