Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who created the orcs?

Answer: Melkor

Melkor captured elves and imprisoned and tortured them in the Pit of Utumno. He bred the first orcs from those former elves.
2. True or false: there are vampires in Tolkien's universe.

Answer: True

They are not the blood-sucking "Dracula" kind but mighty demons and messengers of evil. They are of human shape with bat wings. Sauron himself took on the form of a vampire at times.
3. What did Sam call the pesky critters that were plaguing the hobbits in the Midgewater Marshes?

Answer: Neekerbreekers

He named these evil relatives of the cricket for their cry of "neek-breek" that went on all night.
4. What kind of creature is Old Man Willow?

Answer: Huorn

Unlike Ents, Huorns are wild and dangerous to other creatures. Old Man Willow had a singing magic that he used to lure the hobbits to the river Withywindle and to put them to sleep. Fortunately they were rescued by Tom Bombadil!
5. What creatures captured the hobbits after they left Tom Bombadil's house?

Answer: Barrow-wights

They were sent by the Witch-king to haunt the Barrow-downs of Eriador, former burial places of the Dunedain. In the book, the hobbits fall under their spell and are once again rescued by Tom Bombadil. Merry's sword, that he used to cut the Witch-king with, came from the Barrow-downs.
6. What kind of animals do Mumakil resemble?

Answer: Elephant

Also called "Oliphaunts", they are much larger than elephants and used by the Haradrim, men of the south, in warfare.
7. Wargs resemble wolves, although they are much bigger and thoroughly evil. They can also talk. What are wargs afraid of?

Answer: Fire

In "The Hobbit", wargs managed to chase the company into trees and trap them there. Gandalf kept the wargs at bay by throwing flaming pine cones. Wargs were allied with orcs and often served as their steeds.
8. True or false: Sam killed the giant spider-like creature Shelob.

Answer: False

He wounded her and she fled back into her lair, but her fate is unknown. Shelob was an offspring of Ungoliant, the evil spider-like creature who helped Malkor in the destruction of the Two Trees of Valinor. Shelob spawned the giant spiders of Mirkwood that Bilbo encountered in his quest.
9. What kind of hobbits was Gollum related to?

Answer: Stoors

Stoors were the last group of hobbits to migrate west. They lived along the River Anduin, used boats and could swim. They were also the only hobbits who grew facial hair.
10. Smaug from "The Hobbit" is Tolkien's best-known dragon, but who was the Father of Dragons, also known as The Golden?

Answer: Glaurung

Glaurung was a firedrake, also called uruloki. He was slain by Turin. Ancalagon was the first winged dragon. Tolkien's dragons were evil allies of Morgoth (Melkor).
