Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hobbits are most like what other beings?

Answer: men

Though men are louder, bigger, and less attentive than hobbits, we are their closest relatives.
2. Hobbits are lovers of all of the following except:

Answer: flowers

This can be found in the beginning of "The Hobbit," before the book begins, as an introduction to what a hobbit is. Though many may like flowers, we are not told specifically that they are liked by all hobbits.
3. What are the three original hobbit families?

Answer: Harfoots, Stoors, Fallohides

This can be found in the prologue to "The Fellowship of the Ring." Harfoots are smaller hobbits and preferred hillsides. Stoors were broader and preferred riverbanks. Fallohides loved the woodlands and were taller, slimmer, and of more fair coloring than other hobbits.
4. Hobbits not living in the Shire are called what by Shire-folk?

Answer: outsiders

Hobbits living in the Shire refer to themselves as Insiders and other hobbits as Outsiders.
5. The fourth hobbit of the Conspiracy was:

Answer: Fatty Bolger

Fredegar (or Fatty) Bolger stayed at Crickhollow while the others went on towards Rivendell. Three Ringwraiths came by not too long afterwards searching for Frodo and the Ring. He escaped, but barely.
6. Which hobbit bore the Ring and used it to save thirteen of his friends?

Answer: Bilbo

In "The Hobbit," Bilbo saves his dwarf friends many times. He rescues them twice in Mirkwood - once from the spiders and once from the elves.
7. Frodo's parents died in a boating accident on what river?

Answer: Brandywine

In the Green Dragon, some hobbits discussed the death of Frodo's parents. There are differing accounts on how they died, but all hobbits pitied Frodo. As the old Gaffer said, "Anyway: there was this Mr. Frodo left an orphan and stranded, as you might say, among those queer Bucklanders, being brought up anyhow in Brandy Hall...Mr. Bilbo never did a kinder deed than when he brought the lad back to live among decent folk."
8. Bilbo Baggins taught which hobbit poetry about elves and their tales?

Answer: Samwise

Sam recites a portion of "The Fall of Gil-galad" (that Bilbo had translated into the Common Speech) after the four hobbits and Strider set out from Bree together.
9. Frodo Baggins' two best friends in the Shire before his adventure were:

Answer: Merry and Pippin

Sam was just his gardener until they went through the journey of destroying the Ring together. Merry and Pippin were his closest friends up until that time.
10. The height range of a hobbit in ancient days was:

Answer: 2' to 4'

Hobbits have "shrunk" over the years, so now they are only 2' or 3' at the most. The tallest hobbit in the recorded histories was Bandobras "Bullroarer" Took, who stood at 4'5". He was the only hobbit able to ride a full-size horse.
