Nikki says in the January 6th, 1987 entry that he tried heroin once, but he got sick. He decided to try it again because all of his heroes used heroin.

4. Motley Crue was in the studio in early January 1987 recording "Girls Girls Girls." His band mates constantly ignored his erratic behavior. Nikki's state of mind deteriorates as the diaries progress and he acknowledges it as he writes throughout the year. In the entry from January 17th, 1987, he writes that he started teaching them the song, but halfway through him talking they started playing perfectly. First he was amazed at their quick learning, but then realized he had taught them the song the day before.

8. May 8th, 1987, Nikki states he will enroll in a 30-day program to quit taking heroin. He gets the first methadone shot May 10th and continues until May 13th. When is the next entry that he does heroin again?

Answer: About a month later

Nikki went to get the methadone shots for four days and all but cut his addiction. Surrounded by temptation, on June 18th, 1987, Nikki figured one goodbye round wouldn't hurt the progress he had made.

9. December 23rd, 1987, marks an important day in Nikki's life. He was pronounced dead from an overdose by the paramedics but rushed to the hospital and was revived. What did Nikki do when he woke up in the hospital?

Nikki woke up in the hospital to a policeman asking questions about his drug use. He told off the policeman, unhooked himself from the monitors and IVs and went into the parking lot. Two girls, who had heard he died on the radio, had lit a candle in his honor. Nikki approached them and got a ride back to his house.

"I ripped out my tubes and staggered in just my leather pants into the parking lot, where two teenage girls were sitting crying around a candle. They had heard on the radio that I was dead and looked kind of surprised to see me."

10. What did Nikki do when he got home from the hospital?

He woke up the next day with the needle still in his arm and decided that drugs had taken over his life and had already killed him. He made the decision then that it was time to quit.

If you haven't read the book, I would encourage you to do so. While it is not an uplifting read or for the faint of heart, I would recommend it as a unique perspective into the mind of an addict. Nikki invites the reader to read extremely personal thoughts and feelings and share in his own personal battle against addiction. As Nikki states in the beginning and the end, "The Heroin Diaries" is not written to glamorize the rock star life style, but rather as a tribute to those who have the courage to stand up against addiction and to those who need a boost of confidence to begin their fight.
