Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Stannis' Onion Knight and later Hand, his most loyal councellor

Answer: Davos Seaworth

Davos was once a smuggler from Flea Bottom, the poorest district of King's Landing, and a very notorious one. At the time of Robert's Rebellion, Stannis was assigned by his brother, Robert, to hold Storm's End with a garrison of 500 men. Stannis' force was besieged by the immense army of House Tyrell of the Reach and the Redwyne fleet and they were down to the point of starvation. Davos found a way to smuggle onions into the beleaguered castle, earning him the moniker "Onion Knight".

As a reward for his services, Stannis had Davos knighted. Davos chose "Seaworth" to be his surname and adopted a black ship with an onion on its sails to be his sigil.

When the War of the Five Kings erupts, Davos recruits the sellsail pirate Salladhor Saan in Stannis' service, but the lords of the stormlands do not acknowledge as envoy, because of his humble birth. Before the Battle of the Blackwater, Davos attempted to convice the Lord High Captain Imry Florent to send scouts ahead of their path, but Imry chose to ignore his advice. During the battle, Davos loses his four eldest sons and he himself ends up stranded in a sea mont in Blackwater Bay, before being rescued by Salladhor.

It is Davos who brings the letter from the Night's Watch requesting assistance to Stannis. Stannis embarks for the Wall and saves the Watch from a massive wildling host. Later, Stannis sends Davos at White Harbor, to win the allegiance of House Manderly. When Davos arrives there, his plea is rejected and Davos himself is imprisoned at the Wolf's Den. However, he is later visited by Wyman Manderly, who informs Davos that he did what he did due to the presence of enovys from the treacherous House Frey. Wyman also tells Davos that he will accept Stannis as king, if Davos manages to retrieve Rickon Stark, the youngest son of Eddard Stark, from the island of Skagos, where is currently hiding. (Information comes from "A Clash of Kings", "A Storm of Swords" and "A Dance with Dragons")
2. Commanded Stannis' fleet at the Battle of the Blackwater

Answer: Imry Florent

Imry Florent is a brother to Stannis' wife, Selyse. At the start of the War of the Five Kings, Imry followed his House, the Florents, in declaring for Renly Baratheon, Stannis' younger brother, who had claimed the throne for his own, despite the fact that Stannis was ahead of him in the series of succession.

After Renly's death, the Florents declare for Stannis. Imry is chosen as Lord High Captain and leads Stannis' navy in the Battle of the Blackwater. Imry foolishly chooses to ignore the advice of Ser Davos Seaworth and does not send a single scout ahead, trusting only the numerical superiority of Stannis' fleet. During the battle, Imry is slain. (Information comes from "A Clash of Kings")
3. A knight in Stannis' army, known as "Giantslayer"

Answer: Godry Farring

Godry Farring earned the nickname "Giantslayer" in the Battle of Castle Black, when he felled a giant. Godry has two borthers, Bryen and Gilbert. Gilbert was left by Stannis as commander of the Baratheon garrison at Storm's End, while Bryen is serving Stannis as a squire, alongside Devan Seaworth.

When Stannis leaves Castle Black to liberate the North from both the Boltons and the Greyjoys, Godry and Bryen Farring are with him. They fight at the battle by Deepwood Motte. During the march on Winterfell, Godry leads the vanguard, but Bryen dies during the march. (Information comes from "A Dance With Dragons")
4. A knight in Stannis' army, advised retreat to Dragonstone when the Battle of the Blackwater was lost

Answer: Justin Massey

Justin Massey is a knight from the crownlands in the service of Stannis. In the Battle of the Blackwater, he advised retreat to Dragonstone when it became apparent that Stannis' men could not prevail. Later, he accompanied his king to the Wall and fought at the Battle of Castle Black.

He advised Stannis that he should strike against the Dreadfort, the seat of the Boltons, who now rule the North as vassals of the Lannisters, but Stannis heeds Jon Snow's suggestion not to attempt it. Justin is present at the fight by Deepwood Motte.

He hopes to win Asha Greyjoy's hand in marriage and rule over the Iron Islands. When the army camps in a crofters' village three days west of Winterfell during a snowstorm, Justin is among those who believe that they should stay there, instead of marching in the snow. (Information comes from Theon Greyjoy's first POV chapter in "The Winds of Winter")
5. Joint castellan of the Last Hearth, supplied 400 green boys to Stannis' cause

Answer: Mors Umber

Mors Umber is an uncle of Greatjon Umber, Lord of the Last Hearth. When the Gretjon marches south with Robb Stark's army, the task of the defence of the Last Hearth falls to Mors and his younger brother, Hother. After the infamous Red Wedding and the end of the northern rebellion, Hother Umber chooses to bend the knee to the Iron Throne and Roose Bolton, the new Warden of the North, but only because the Greatjon is held prisoner at the Twins. Mors decides to join Stannis, provided he will not be asked to fight against his brother. Mors and his 400 green boys camp in the wolfswood, near Winterfell and they blow horns during a blizzard to confuse and perplex the Boltons.

When Theon Greyjoy and the fake Arya Stark (actually Jeyne Poole) escape the Boltons by jumping off Winterfell's battlements, Mors and his boys capture them and send them to Stannis. (Information comes from "A Dance with Dragons")
6. Lord of White Harbor, told Stannis' Hand that he will swear allegiance to Stannis if Rickon Stark is retrieved from Skagos

Answer: Wyman Manderly

Wyman Manderly is the head of House Manderly and one of the principal bannermen of the Starks. When Robb Stark calls the banners and marches south against the Lannisters, Wyman sends his two sons, Wylis and Wendel with Robb and he stays to White Harbor to command its defenses. During the War of the Five Kings, Wylis Manderly is captured by the Lannisters, while Wendel Manderly is slain at the Red Wedding by the treacherous Freys and Boltons. Wyman bends the knee to the Iron Throne, but he has neither forgotten nor forgiven. Stannis sees a potential ally in Wyman and sends him a letter requesting his allegiance, but Wyman claims in his reply that he is far too old for fighting. Stannis sends his Hand, Davos Seaworth, to White Harbor, to treat with Wyman.

However, with three Freys in his court, Wyman cannot speak openly to Davos and has him imprisoned in the Wolf's Den, spreading false rumors that he executed Davos. Persuaded that Wyman is truly loyal to the Iron Throne, the Lannisters release Wylis from captivity. Davos is paid a visit by Wyman and the Lord of White Harbor tells the Onion Knight that he has learned that Rickon Stark is still alive and has fled to the island of Skagos. If Davos smuggles Rickon out of Skagos to White Harbor, Wyman will swear fealty to Stannis. Wyman later goes to the Bolton-occupied Winterfell for the wedding of Ramsay Bolton to "Arya Stark" (who, in fact, is Jeyne Poole).

After a series of unexplained murders at Winterfell, the Boltons and Freys suspect Wyman is behind them. Tensions break and six Manderly men-at-arms are killed by the Freys, while two Frey soldiers are killed by White Harbor men. Roose Bolton orders both the Manderly and Frey forces out of the castle, to march against Stannis in the vanguard. (Information comes from "A Dance with Dragons")
7. Destroyed a large part of Stannis' fleet in the Battle of the Blackwater using wildfire

Answer: Tyrion Lannister

Initially, the Alchemists' Guild had been commissioned to make wildfire by Tyrion's sister, Cersei Lannister, but Tyrion understood its importance in thwarting Stannis' attempt to take King's Landing. When Stannis' fleet enters Blackwater Rush to engage the smaller royal fleet, they encountered ships loaded with wildfire.

The wildfire destroyes many of Stannis' ships, but the substance also engulfs many ships of the royal fleet, too. Stannis, however, does not flinch and presses on with his attack.

The defenders, led by Tyrion Lannister, try to throw the attackers back, but as the battle progresses they suffer many casualties. After a few hours, Stannis' army is in the cusp of victory, but then 50000 Tyrell and more than 10000 Lannister soldiers arrive to aid the defenders.

The Baratheon soldiers lose hope and many of them change sides in mid-battle. Although Stannis manages to escape, his army has suffered a major debacle. (Information comes from "A Clash of Kings")
8. King-beyond-the-Wall, was surprised and defeated by Stannis in the Battle of Castle Black

Answer: Mance Rayder

Mance Rayder is a wildling child raised by men of the Night's Watch and he had once joined the black brothers, before deserting and going on with the task of uniting all the wildling tribes with him as their leader, initially with the purpose of invading the Seven Kingdoms and later with the purpose of escaping the Others.

After the Great Ranging the Night's Watch attempted beyond the Wall which resulted in the disaster at the Fist of the First Men, Mance attacks Castle Black. The Night's Watch, led by Jon Snow, holds his forces at bay long enough for Stannis' army to arrive. Mance's army is defeated, he and many of his lieutenants are taken prisoner. Mance is sentenced to death for deserting the Night's Watch and is supposedly executed. However, the red priestess Melisandre had, the night before the scheduled execution, changed Mance's face to that of one of his captains, Rattleshirt, and Rattleshirt's to that of Mance. Later, when Jon Snow learns that Ramsay Bolton has married his half-sister, Arya Stark (not knowing that the girl given to Ramsay was actually Jeyne Poole), Melisandre tells Jon the truth and persuades him to send Mance and a group of spearwives to retrieve her. They are successful in their attempt to rescue the girl, with the help of Theon Greyjoy, but, according to a taunting letter sent to Jon Snow by Ramsay Bolton, they have been captured, the spearwives have been executed and Mance is put in a cage. (Information comes from "A Storm of Swords")
9. Ironborn warrior, was defeated by Stannis in the fight by Deepwood Motte and is now his prisoner

Answer: Asha Greyjoy

Asha is the daughter of Balon Greyjoy, Lord of the Iron Islands and the sister of Theon Greyjoy. When Balon proclaimed himself king and decided that the North was ripe for taking, Asha was successful in her seizing of Deepwood Motte while Theon's attempt to capture Winterfell appeared to be successful, but led in him being captured by the Boltons.

After Balon's mysterious death, Asha unsuccessfully tried to claim the Seastone Chair, being defeated by her uncle Euron. In order to eliminate Asha as a rival, Euron schemes to have her married to Erik Ironmaker, but she flees to Deepwood Motte.

However, after her return, her force is overtaken by Stannis' army. Stannis restores Deepwood Motte to House Glover, earning him the support of House Glover and its vassal Wolfswood clans, as well as the support of House Mormont. Ashais taken prisoner and marches with Stannis' army against the Bolton-occupied Winterfell.

However, a snowstorm slowes them down and they ultimately have to stop at a crofters' village, three days west of the castle.

In the village, they are visited by the Braavosi banker Tycho Nestoris and his entourage. Nestoris has Asha's brother, Theon, who had meanwhile managed to escape the clutches of Ramsay Bolton, with him. Upon seeing her brother, Asha initially does not recognize him, thus reversing the setting in "A Clash of Kings", when Theon had returned to the Iron Islands and he had failed to recognize his sister. (Information comes from "A Dance with Dragons")
10. Treacherous castellan of Karhold, seemingly joined Stannis but secretly works for Roose Bolton

Answer: Arnolf Karstark

Arnolf Karstark is the uncle of Lord Rickard Karstark of Karhold. When Robb Stark called his bannermen and marched south against the Lannisters, Arnolf Karstark was left in Karhold as castellan. During the War of the Five Kings, Rickard Karstark was executed by Robb Stark for treason (an act that cost Robb the support of House Karstark), two of his sons, Eddard and Torrhen, perished at the hands of Jaime Lannister and his last son, Harrion, was captured, thus making Arnolf de facto head of House Karstark.

When Stannis Baratheon, after the Battle of Castle Black, requests the allegiance of the northern lords in his campaign against the Boltons and the Greyjoys, Arnolf responds positively. However, he is in secret league with the Boltons. As Jon Snow learns from the later Lord Rickard's daughter, Alys, the sole reason Arnolf pretended to side with Stannis is the hope that the Lannisters will execute Harrion, thus making Alys the last living scion of Lord Rickard. Arnolf then plans to have Alys married to his son, Cregan and thus have complete sway over Karhold. Jon Snow sent a message to Stannis alerting him on Arnolf's treachery.

The message is brought to Stannis by the Braavosi banker Tycho Nestoris. Stannis then has Arnolf and his kinsmen arrested. He says that all of them will die for their treason, but the manner of their death will depend on their willingness to cooperate with him. (Information comes froM "A Dance with Dragons")
