Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Last King of the Reach before Aegon's Conquest, perished in the Field of Fire

Answer: Mern IX Gardener

Mern was the last King of the Reach before the Conquest and also the last King of his line.

When Aegon Targaryen landed at Westeros in order to conquer it, Mern formed an alliance with Loren I Lannister, King of the Rock, against the invaders. Their combined army faced Aegon in the battle known as Field of Fire, where the Targaryen dragons killed Mern and his kinsmen, wiping out the male line of House Gardener.

The Reach bent the knee to Aegon the Conqueror afterwards and House Tyrell was elevated to the position of the Lord of Highgarden.

Information comes from "The World of Ice and Fire".
2. A commander of the Warrior's Sons against Maegor the Cruel and kinsman of the Lord of Oldtown

Answer: Morgan Hightower

Morgan was a member of the Warrior's Sons even before Aegon's Conquest.

When the Warrior's Sons and the Poor Fellows rose in rebellion against Maegor the Cruel, Morgan was given command of his order. However, they were ruthlessly persecuted and were branded as outlaws, while they suffered defeates by Maegor and his dragon, Balerion the Black Dread. When Maegor threatened to destroy the Starry Sept in Oldtown, the High Septon that had initiated the revolt against him was poisoned. It was suspected that Morgan killed him, so that he would be pardoned by the tyrant.

3. One of the conspirators known as the Caltrops, he sacrificed himself so that Ulf the Sot would cease troubling the retainers of King Aegon II

Answer: Hobert Hightower

Ser Hobert was related to Lord Ormund Hightower of Oldtown and to Alicent Hightower, second Queen of King Viserys I Targaryen.

When Lord Ormund called the banners of Oldtown to fight for King Aegon II, Hobert was entrusted leadership of the baggage train. At the First Battle of Tumbleton, Lord Ormund's men battled retainers of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and the battle was indecisive, until Ulf the Sot and Hard Hugh Hammer, who were in the service of the Princess, changed their allegiance.

The Two Betrayers sacked Tumbleton and started demanding crowns and castles, to the fury of King Aegon's retainers. Hobert and some other noblemen, known collectively as the Caltrops, plotted to bring the traitors low. Before they could strike, however, they were attacked by forces supporting Rhaenyra at the Second Battle of Tumbleton. Many men perished, including most of the Caltrops, but also Hard Hugh Hammer.

Still, Ulf the Sot was alive and in possession of a dragon. When asked of his intentions, he said that he would march with the army towards King's Landing, provided he would be given the Iron Throne. Hobert decided to dispatch him with poisoned Arbor gold wine, yet, in order to calm Ulf's suspicions, he drank from it as well, to their mutual deaths.

4. Fought for the greens during the Dance of the Dragons and later rose to the office of Hand of the King

Answer: Unwin Peake

Unwin Peake was the lord of Starpike, Whitegrove and Dustonbury and an influential figure at the time of the Dance of the Dragons.

When the war broke out, Lord Unwin joined the greens, who supported King Aegon II's ascension to the Iron Throne. He joined Lord Ormund Hightower's army before the First Battle of Tumbleton. Unwin was a part of the Caltrops conspiracy, aiming to rid the greens from the treacherous dragonriders Ulf the Sot and Hard Hugh Hammer. Although his pavilion was burned by dragonfire when a force supporting Princess Rhaenyra attacked the encamped greens, he managed to survive. After the end of the war, he became one of the Regents of King Aegon III and later was appointed Hand of the King, but resigned when the King refused to marry his daughter.

5. Master-at-arms of the Red Keep during the reign of Aegon IV and a stauch supporter of Daemon Blackfyre in his rebellion

Answer: Quentyn Ball

Ser Quentyn Ball was considered one of the greatest warriors of his era. He was responsible for training Daemon Blackfyre in arms, making his pupil embody all the ideals of the chivalric warrior.

Ser Quentyn had been promised a position in the Kingsguard by Aegon IV, but the King died before a vacancy occurred. The King's successor, Daeron II, refused to honor that agreement and Fireball was passed over for Ser Willem Wylde. Fireball was one of the chief pillars of support to Daemon Blackfyre, when he attempted to usurp the Iron Throne. During the rebellion, he shattered royalist hosts at the banks of the River Mander, at the Golden Tooth and out of Lannisport, but he was killed on the eve of the climactic Battle of the Redgrass Field by a mysterious archer.

6. One of the supporters of Ser Duncan the Tall in the Trial of the Seven at Ashford Meadow, remarked that he preferred to be green than rotten

Answer: Raymun Fossoway

When Ser Duncan the Tall was wrongly accused of trying to harm the mad Prince Aerion Brightflame, Steffon promied Duncan his support, but joined Aerion instead. Enraged by his cousin's behavior, Raymun asked Lord Lyonel Baratheon to knight him, so that he could fight alongisde Ser Duncan in the Trial of the Seven, thus founding House Fossoway of the New Barrel, dubbed as "the green-apple Fossoways".

Information comes from "The Hedge Knight".
7. A Knight of Standfast, fought for the Blackfyres in their First Rebellion and later became an employer of Ser Duncan the Tall

Answer: Eustace Osgrey

Eustace Osgrey was a member of House Osgrey of Standfast, which had once been one of the most powerful houses in the Reach but had began diminishing after the arrival of Aegon the Conqueror and, of all their holdings, only Standfast remained.

At the first Blackfyre Rebellion, Ser Eustace joined the rebels, thinking that Daemon Blackfyre embodied the ideals of the Warrior-King. All his sons died at the climactic Battle of the Redgrass Field. After the war, Ser Eustace and his neighbor, Rohanne Webber, clashed over a body of water, known as the Chequey Water. Ser Duncan the Tall, at Eustace's employment, defeated Lady Webber's champion and the water was restored to Eustace. Later, the two former rivals decided that they were no rivals after all, and Ser Eustace took Rohanne's hand in marriage. Thus, pieces of lands stolen from the Osgreys by the Webbers were restored to their rightful owners.

8. A member of the Band of Nine, nicknamed "The Bad Apple"

Answer: Derrick Fossoway

It is unknown if Derrick was a red-apple Fossoway (from Cider Hall) or a green-apple one (from New Barrel).

Derrick joined the Band of Nine, a group of outlaws, exiles and pirates who sought to carve out a kingdom for themselves. Derrick, Spotted Tom the Butcher and Maelys "the Monstrous" Blackfyre dreamed of conquering Westeros. However, their ambitions were cut short when Ormund Baratheon, Hand of the King for Jaehaerys II, led a Westerosi army into the Stepstones. Although Ormund died in battle, the Band was defeated and Maelys Balckfyre was slain in combat by Ser Barristan Selmy.

After his death, however, Elwood joined his elder brother and true heir to the Iron Throne, Stannis Baratheon. Thus, Elwood became seneschal of Storm's End for Stannis and second-in-command to Gilbert Farring, leader of the Storm's End garrison.
