Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The star of Earendil led the Edain to the Island of Elenna where the kindom of Numenor was founded. Which of the following is true about the first king of Numenor?

Answer: All of these

The sons of Earendil, Elrond and Elros, were given an irreversible choice as to whether they would belong to the race of elves or men. Elros chose to be a man and therefore to be mortal.
2. From the highest mountain in Numenor what could be seen?

Answer: The White Tower of Eressea in the Undying Lands

The Valar could certainly be faulted in retrospect for allowing the Numenoreans this tantalizing glimpse of immortal lands. Surely the whisperings of Sauron that played on the Numenorean's fear of death would have had less effect if the object of their desire had not been concretely visible to them.
3. Which of the following was a gift of the One to men?

Answer: Death

The One apparently felt that death, which came to be known as "The Doom of Men", was in reality a benefit. The Palantir were gifts to Elendil's house from the Eldar not the Valar. The Sceptor of Annuminas was held to be the oldest work of men. The crown of Gondor was also crafted by men, and the original was speculated to have been created using the crown Isildur wore at the time Sauron was defeated.
4. When Ar Pharazon the Golden, ruler of Numenor, and architect of the greatest military force in the history of Middle Earth, attacked Sauron on Middle Earth, what did Sauron do?

Answer: He surrendered and did homage

Sauron gave up and returned as a prisoner to Numenor where he inflamed the King's desire for immortality convincing the king that, if the Numenoreans conquered the Undying Lands, then the Numenoreans would become immortal.
5. When Ar Pharazon brought his armada to the Undying Lands, what did the Valar do?

Answer: Laid down their Guardianship

They "laid down their Guardianship and called on the One." Presumably then, the One destroyed Numenor.
6. How did Sauron manage to escape back to Middle Earth after the destruction of Numenor?

Answer: His body was destroyed but he returned as a Spirit of Hatred

After he lost his body he could no longer hide his evil appearance to assist him in his deceptions.
7. Following the destruction of Numenor, Elendil came to Middle Earth with his two sons. Isildur was one. What was the name of the second?

Answer: Anarion

When Elendil and his sons first came to Middle Earth they founded Gondor in the South and Arnor in the North. Originally Elendil was king in the North and the two brothers apparently ruled jointly in the South. After Anarion and Elendil's deaths the descendants of Anarion ruled in the South and Isildur in the North.

This would seem to imply that Isildur was the eldest son but I have not been able to confirm it.
8. Why didn't Isildur's brother take the ring?

Answer: He died prior to the combat with Sauron.

Both Gilgalad and Elendil perished in overthrowing Sauron. Cirdan and Elrond both urged the destruction of the Ring, but Isildur rashly claimed it.
9. In the final combat with Sauron on Mount Doom who stood with Gilgalad and Elendil?

Answer: Cirdan, Elrond and Isildur

In Rivendell at the council Elrond states that only he and Cirdan stood with Gilgalad and only Isildur with Elendil. Cirdan was also one of the keepers of the three Elven Rings of Power.
10. Where did Isildur lose the One Ring?

Answer: Gladden fields

The ring ended up in the River Anduin where Deagol eventually found it and was then murdered by Smeagol who became Gollum.
