Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Durin the First was the oldest and most renowned of the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves. What was his other name among the dwarves?

Answer: Durin the Deathless

He began the building of Khazad-dum. His name came from his vast age and the belief that one day he would rise again.
2. There were several kinds of dwarves. Which ones were known as "Durin's Folk"?

Answer: Longbeards

The Seven Fathers of the Dwarves were placed in different locations to await their awakening. Durin the Deathless awoke at Mount Gundabad in the Misty Mountains.
3. What was the beginning of the dwarves' New Year?

Answer: The first day of the last moon of autumn

In "The Hobbit", Thorin Oakenshield explains that this day is called "Durin's Day" if the last moon of autumn and the sun are seen together in the sky. It turned out to be a fateful day for Bilbo Baggins and Thorin's company.
4. Especially in "The Hobbit", Tolkien did create some funny dwarves. What was Bombur's claim to fame?

Answer: He was too fat to move himself

During the quest for the Lonely Mountain, Bombur was a stout but valiant member of the company. Afterwards, though, he became so fat that six dwarves had to lift him up.
5. Sauron gave seven Rings of Power to the dwarves to bind them to him. True or false: the seven dwarven kings became his servants.

Answer: False

The rings had little power over the dwarves except to increase their inherent lust for gold. Sauron managed to recover three of the rings; the other four were consumed by dragons. (As Gandalf said to Frodo, dragon fire was the only fire capable of destroying a Ring of Power, other than the One Ring.)
6. Which of the following is NOT an elvish name for dwarves?

Answer: Khamul

"Gonnhirrim" means "Masters of Stone"; "Naugrim" means "Stunted People". "Hadhod" is the elvish pronunciation of "Khazad", the dwarves' name for themselves. Khamul is the second in command of the Ringwraiths, the only one actually named by Tolkien.
7. True or false: the dwarves would eagerly teach their language to outsiders.

Answer: False

As Gandalf mentioned at the Gate of Moria, the dwarves were extremely secretive about their language "Khuzdul". Even among themselves they usually spoke the language of the region they lived in, and took their names from those languages. Their own secret names were not even put on their tombs after death.
8. From what language did Tolkien get the names for his dwarves?

Answer: Old Norse

Almost all of the dwarves in "The Hobbit", as well as many others, are named after dwarves in various Old Norse poems.
9. Dwarves were master miners and crafters, as well as fierce warriors. Who were their main enemies?

Answer: Orcs

Both dwarves and orcs lived and worked underground. Their greatest war was the War of the Dwarves and Orcs in the years 2790-2799 of the Third Age. It ended with the Battle of Azanulbizar where the dwarves finally destroyed the armies of the orcs.
10. Finally a question about Gimli: What was one of the names given to him after the War of the Ring?

Answer: Lock-bearer

Gimli got this name because of the three golden hairs he got from Galdriel. He was also called Elf-friend and Lord of the Glittering Caves. Because of his friendship with Legolas, he is believed to have sailed with him to the Undying Lands.
