Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Galadriel, Gandalf, Saruman and Elrond are part of the White Council.

Answer: True

The White Council began in the Second Age. It was a group of wizards and elves in Middle Earth who came together to discuss the growing power of Sauron in Mordor at the request of Galadriel. The head of the council in the Third Age was Saruman until he turned against them in the "Lord of the Rings". Some of the other characters in the White Council are Radagast the Brown, and Glorfindel.
2. What is the name of Galadriel's ring?

Answer: Nenya

Galadriel's ring was one of the three rings forged by the elves of Eregion and given to the elves. After the One Ring of power, the three elven rings are the most powerful of the 20 rings given to the different races in Middle-earth. Nenya is made of mithril and had a white stone which is thought to be a diamond.

The name Nenya means water but Galadriel's ring is also called the Ring of Adamant, meaning the ring of a legendary rock or mineral, or the White Ring because of its colour.
3. Because of whom did Saruman turn against the White Council?

Answer: Sauron

In the "Lord of the Rings", Saruman became "the puppet of Sauron" and lost his place as leader of the White Council. It is because of his craving for power and the loss of faith in the men of Middle-earth that Saruman betrayed Gandalf and all the other members of the council.

As shown in the "Lord of the Rings" movies and books in the "Fellowship of the Ring", during a visit to Saruman seeking his help, Gandalf was shown a different side of his friend. Saruman tried to convince him that there was no hope in men and admitted that he has joined the side of Sauron.
4. What race in Middle-earth is Radagast the Brown?

Answer: Wizard

As a friend of Gandalf, Radagast came to Middle-earth in the year 1000 in the Third Age, as did all of the other wizards. Formally known as Aiwendil, meaning bird-friend, Radagast has a strong relationship with animals and is wise in the subjects of herbs and beasts.

In "The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien, he is described as Gandalf's cousin and close friend to Beorn the skin-changer. This magical wizard is not one of the biggest characters in the books and thus not known as much as some of the other characters of the White Council. He is mentioned after the Council of Elrond in the "Fellowship of the Ring" when Elrond explains to Gandalf that scouts have been to his home yet he was no where to be found. Said by Gandalf, "Radagast is never a traveller, unless driven by great need". This wizard is a big mystery according to the books.
5. From which location in Middle-earth is Elrond from?

Answer: Rivendell

The home of this wise elf is known as the Last Homely House in the books of J.R.R. Tolkien. According to this writer, Elrond lives in the between the Misty Mountains and Trollshaws (east of Weathertop). The house of Rivendell is a home made of nature. Every room to balcony flows with the trees that surround the area so that their presence in Rivendell does not affect the nature that's around.

This location is much like the forest of Lothlorien but has its differences. For example, Rivendell is built on ground level while Lorien is situated across the tree tops.

The home of Elrond is a great meeting place for his council and is a big part of the books of J.R.R. Tolkien.
6. When the White Council of the Third Age was first formed, their job was to keep watch on the growing darkness in where?

Answer: Mirkwood

The Necromancer was found out to be Sauron after the successful watch of the White Council. Sauron's power was slowly growing through Mirkwood forest, east of the Misty Mountains. Three years later, Dol Guldur, a stronghold in Mirkwood forest, began darkening, Galadriel called for the council. Until Gandalf entered the stronghold, Sauron hadn't been heard of for years and not until ninety years later did Bilbo find the ring. Only then did Sauron come out once more with a strong enough power to threaten the Middle-earth.
7. Saruman yearned to possess the one ring of power from the beginning of the formation of the White Council.

Answer: True

Power ruled Middle-earth as seen by the battles against Sauron and his dark magic ring. After years of being afraid of dark power and fighting against it, Saruman gave in to his need for the strength of evil and joined the side of Sauron. Even though for years he had been secretly hiding his yearning for the ring from the rest of the White Council, it wasn't until Gandalf's visit in the Fellowship of the Ring that he revealed it openly to the people of Middle Earth.
8. One Gandalf's role in the White Council was a travelling researcher and thus was given the nickname of "far-wanderer".

Answer: True

Gandalf travelled from place to place finding information from libraries, people and other methods of gathering information. As he didn't have his own place in Middle-earth where he lived unlike Galadriel of Lothlorien, Saruman of Isengard and Elrond of Rivendell, he would go from here to there and research for the White Council and be able to visit each members location to share and elaborate on the subject. Gandalf also had other jobs as part of the council just like every other member such as being a part of debates and conversations between the group and planning ways to keep Middle-earth safe, but travelling around and researching on subjects at hand that need attention was of his most important roles.
9. Everyone in the White Council has their own ring of power.

Answer: False

Elrond wears the ring named Vilya containing a blue stone. It is the mightiest of the three elven rings of power and thus the second most powerful ring after the one ring of power of Sauron. Galadriel has the Ring named Nenya. The ring of water. Though there were no rings given to wizards, Gandalf wears the ring named Narya. The elf Cirdan met him upon arrival in Middle-earth and thought he was the "wisest and greatest spirit". Gandalf was then given the ring of fire containing a red stone.

Saruman has no ring since the redistribution of rings have only been given to men, elves, dwarves and one for Sauron the dark lord. None were given to the wizards. No rings were wielded by Radagast nor Glorfindel either.
10. In what year, in the Third Age, was the White Council formed?

Answer: 2463

The darkness of Mirkwood started in 2460 and thus the White Council of Galadriel, Gandalf, Elrond, Saruman and the other lords of Eldar (the greatest of the elves) of Middle-earth was formed. Though the White Council is a very significant group in the world of Middle-earth, it is not the only important event in the year of 2463.

That year is also the year that Deagol, the hobbit-like creature, found the One Ring while fishing. His best friend Smeagol then strangled him over the ownership of it. Smeagol is also known as Gollum, the creature who owned the ring and then lost it when Bilbo found it in his cave in the Misty Mountain. Gollum has caused trouble for the White Council through his mischief and greed that he does under control of the One Ring, or, as he calls it, "the preciousss..."
