Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Sir Walter Scott's poem, "Proud Maisie", which bird sings to the lady?

Answer: Robin

This poem features in "Heart of Midlothian", published in 1818. It is sung by
Madge Wildfire as she lays on her deathbed.

"Proud Maisie is in the wood,
Walking so early;
Sweet Robin sits on the bush,
Singing so rarely.

"Tell me, thou bonny bird,
When shall I marry me?"
"When six braw gentlemen
Kirkward shall carry ye."

"Who makes the bridal bed,
Birdie, say truly?"
"The grey-headed sexton
That delves the grave duly.

"The glow-worm o'er grave and stone
Shall light thee steady.
The owl from the steeple sing,
'Welcome, proud lady'."

2. In "To Kill a Mockingbird" Atticus told his children that it was a sin to kill a mockingbird with their new air rifles. What kind of bird did he tell them to shoot instead?

Answer: Blue jay

Jem was puzzled by her father's comment, but Miss Maudie enlightened her. "Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy."

It always seemed odd to me that Harper Lee drew such a contrast between mockingbirds and blue jays. Apart from the coloration and song, the two birds have similar behavior.

3. The poems of Catullus often mention a bird which his lover, Lesbia, kept as a pet. What kind of bird did Lesbia have - called by its Latin name 'passer' in the poems?

Answer: Sparrow

One hundred and sixteen of Catullus' poems survive. Born in Northern Italy c.84 BC, he lived mostly in Rome until his death at the age of 30. His poems to 'Lesbia' - whose real name is believed to have been Clodia Metelli - range in tone from tenderness, to eroticism and bitterness, (on account of her several other lovers). The sparrow itself, described in one poem as hopping about her lap, ("circumsiliens modo huc modo illuc"), is thought variously to refer to a real pet bird she owned or merely to be erotic symbolism.

4. In "Treasure Island", what is the name of Long John Silver's parrot?

Answer: Captain Flint

The parrot was named after the pirate Captain Flint, who Silver had once served under before his death. Flint is the one who buried the titular treasure, and whose map finds its way into the hands of Jim Hawkins near the beginning of the novel. The parrot, Captain Flint, is most remembered for saying the phrase, "Pieces of eight!", but it would also speak in response to the actions of Silver and the crew, including, "swearing blue fire", imitating the pirates.

5. Which of these is NOT the name of an owl from the Harry Potter books?

Answer: Plop

Owls are popular pets for the students of Hogwarts, they are not only companions, but they are also the mail carriers.
Probably the most famous is Hedwig, the Snowy Owl Hagrid bought for Harry as a birthday present in the first book.
Errol is the less than competent owl of the Weasley family, who has a tendency to crash into closed windows and isn't great at landing.
Pigwidgeon (or 'Pig' for short), is a very small owl that became Ron Weasley's pet after his rat, Scabbers, turned out to be Peter Pettigrew in disguise.

One of my favourite childhood books was 'The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark', by Jill Tomlinson. The main character being an owl named Plop!

6. "The Raven", is Edgar Allan Poe's most famous poem, but which Charles Dickens novel features a talking raven and may have helped inspire this poem?

Answer: Barnaby Rudge

"The Raven" was first printed in the "New York Evening Mirror" in January 1845. It made Poe instantly famous, although this did not translate into financial success. It remains one of the most famous poems ever written.

"Barnaby Rudge" was published in 1841 and is an historical novel dealing with the Gordon Riots of 1780. The title character has a talking raven - Grip. Poe wrote a review of the book for "Graham's Magazine" in which he said the raven should have had a more symbolic purpose.

7. In the novel, what is the meaning of the title of Jack Higgins' book, "The Eagle Has Landed"?

Answer: German paratroopers had landed safely in England.

An eagle is featured on the coat of arms of Germany and "The Eagle has Landed" was the code message sent to Heinrich Himmler to let him know that a team of crack paratroopers had arrived in England to kidnap Winston Churchill and return him to the Reich. As they do not speak English well, they pose as Polish servicemen and mingle with the local villagers while they wait for Churchill to arrive for a planned meeting nearby. It is an exciting story that is worth reading.
