Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It was the President's idea to "leak" the Cecilian Project to the Russians.

Answer: False

During this meeting that the President had with Warren Nicholson and Greg Collins, Nicholson suggested that small bits of information be given to the Russians. In this way, the "trap" could be set and the CIA would have custody of the top Russian intelligence agency.
2. Why was the President not happy with the plan to "leak" the Cecilian Project?

Answer: he felt like he was stabbing Metasection in the back

The President was not happy wth this plan that Nicholson had. He felt by giving the Russians bits of information that he was breaking a promise he made with the men in Metasection. He also felt that the Russians would then win "this crazy arms race" if they awre able to retrieve the Byzanium before the Americans.

He warned Nicholson and Collins that if it are ever found out that they gave information to the Russians, that they would forever be labeled as traitors.
3. Where did Gunn say they should start the search for the Titanic?

Answer: around the area where the Sappho I picked up the coronet

Sandecker was fishing for ideas as to where to search for the Titanic. The position where the Sappho I picked up Farly's coronet and where the Titanic's last known position was did not match up. Pitt explained that there was some doubt as to where the ship actually sank.
4. What was Pitt's idea about the search?

Answer: delay of 48 hours

Sandecker thought this was an appalling idea. After all, the Russians would soon smell something and start off on their own trek. Pitt suggested that he and Gunn would have the Modock which is a deep sea salvage tender and the Sea Slug which is a deep sea submersible over the general area. Sandecker could program all the data that he can get into NUMA's computers and give them the precise position of the wreck.
5. What Maryland town did the Seagram's live in?

Answer: Chevy Chase

Donner picked Seagram up at his home in Chevy Chase, Maryland. On the way, Seagram told Donner what he was ordered to do by the President.
6. Was Donner shocked at what Seagram told him when he pciked him up?

Answer: Yes

Donner was so shocked he pulled over to the side of the road. He had said that Admiral Kemper wuld never allow such a thing to happen, but Seagram stated that perhaps Kemper may be asked to lay back as well. Seagram is just as confused as Donner at this point.
7. Who was Margonian supposed to meet at the Boredino restaurant?

Answer: his informant

If you remember from earlier in the book, Margonian was supposed to be meeting his informant at the Boredino restaurant. Margonian had also met Prevlov there and was having a drink with him and discussing the Netvia Zemblia affair. He later excused himself at the appropriate time and went into the men's room.

His informant handed him an envelope which contained some "explosive" information in it. Margonian said he will take it and handle it "delicately".
8. In Dana's letter to Gene, who did she say she was living with?

Answer: Marie Sheldon

When Gene returned home from work one night, he found a letter from Dana on his desk. Because of their constant fighting, she had decided to move out and move in with Marie Sheldon who is a colleague of Dana's at NUMA. On the way to NUMA one morning, Marie told Dana she would get a couple of NUMA's single men so that they can have lunch together and Dana can get a fresher start.
9. Where did Sandecker meet Murray Silverstein?

Answer: Alexandria College of Oceanography

Sandecker was met by Silverstein who had helped run some test on the sinking of the Titanic to better understand how and where she sank. Silverstein noted that they had come up with some interesting results.
10. What did the marbles represent, in the model?

Answer: boilers

As Sandecker watched the experiment, he noticed several marbles falling to the bottom of the tank. They seem like they were coming from the model of the ship. When asked, Silverstein noted that they played the role of the boilers which they believe crashed through the hull and landed on the ocean floor before the actual ship did. Silverstein said that there could be about 19 of the 29 boilers on the sea floor along with one of the smokestacks.
11. The model was made of metal.

Answer: False

Sandecker was shocked to hear that the model was made of ceramics. Silverstein said that the ceramic models could be made a lot faster than the traditional metal ones. They could never be any kind of prize example of the ship, but they worked just the same.
12. Where did Silverstein say to start looking?

Answer: in the general area where the coronet was found

Silverstein said to start looking about 1500 yards southeast of where the Sappho I picked up the coronet. They should run across her there.
13. Which submersible was being used to find the ship?

Answer: Sea Slug

Because of the area that needed to be covered, Pitt decided to use the Sea Slug. He, Gunn and Giordino would use the 18 hour life support system. Giordino said they would have five hours for reserve in case something should happen. Pitt was confident, and said they would find her in about five hours.
14. Did they find the Titanic?

Answer: Yes

About five hours later, they started to see things on the sea floor. They were the boilers. One sonar blip indicated the smokestack. The biggest blip was the ship herself.
15. Was the ship mostly intact?

Answer: Yes

Other than the fact that three of her smokestacks were gone, the ship was in one piece. She was listed to the left and sat pretty heavily in the silt. The fourth funnel was bent back and laying against the stern of the boat deck. One of the stacks they found, and the other two were probably swept away by the fall to the bottom.
